Hey all,
I was just wondering.. The average human hair growth rate is 6 inches per year no?.. But is it that rate for everyone, or just people of average height? What I mean is that for a short 5 year old girl and a tall 30 year old, their hair would grow at the same rate? I'm asking this 'coz I'm quite tall (About 6') and I was wondering if my hair would take much longer than I think it takes to grow. I mean, if I had 20cm long hair, it would be shaggy, but if a 5 year old girl had 20cm long hair, it would reach her shoulder blades :P.
Also, how long does it take hair to grow for the front part to fit into a complete ponytail? I have thick curly hair and am about 7.5 months into growing it so far. It reaches the bottom part of my nose when pulled down. How much longer do I have to wait? I was thinking of putting the front part of my hair up in a hairband until it all fits in a ponytail.
thanks!
Shawn
P.S: I'll soon post my 8-month update with pics.
Yeah six inches a year is the average, some peoples grows faster and some a bit slower. For full ponytail length (low ponytail) you'd have to have hair that reaches your shoulders atleast, but perhaps a bit lower than that (bottom of your neck). One technique i was told of by a member of the Hyperboard was to take a piece of tape or string and put it at the start of your bangs and pull it to the back of your head, this will give you more of an idea of how long it needs to be.
Good luck.

I have been growing for exactly 1 year and 6 months now and my front part doesn't fit into a full pony tail yet. I've heard once your bangs area reach your caller bone you could have a full pony tail.
Hair growth is not dependent on height. For most people it is
about 6" per year. For hair to reach your belt, you need to have
a length of about 1/3 of your height. At 6 feet tall that would
be a 24" ponytail. For a 5 year old child that is 45" tall that
would be a 15" ponytail.
Your bangs have to be at least 13" to reach the ponytail tie in
the back. For most of us, only about 90% of our hair will ever
reach the tie. (There are always new hairs growing in to replace
the old ones that have shed. They have to grow for about 2 years
to reach the tie.) About 85 to 90% of my hair reaches the tie,
and my hair reaches the tops of my knees. When my hair is freshly
washed I need a bandana to keep the shorter hairs from getting
in my face and mouth.

This has been discussed on other boards, and the consensus seems to be that, whilst growth rates do vary, there's no correlation with height whatsoever. This does mean in general that if you are tall it will indeed take longer for your hair to reach a certain point on your body.
OTOH, there's a lot of variation between the length of people's bodies versus the length of their legs. So, for example, I am 5'8" with a long body and short legs. This means my hair takes just as long to reach any particular point as it would do if I were 6' tall and of more balanced proportions, but without actually being that tall. So it's not just height that affects it.
And yes, if you are six foot and have a five foot GF, then her hair will seem to be much longer for the same amount of growth. OTOH, the average difference in height between the genders is about two or three inches at most, not a foot.
(I just re-read your post and you were talking about a 5 yo girl, not a 5' GF, but the point still stands)
