Just another random thread to get to know people better and their musical interests. A lot of people usually make the connection that musicians have long hair and vise versa...and I wanted to know if it was true for any of you here. I personally play the guitar, piano and trombone hah. On a more hair related matter I often get my hair laying on my fretboard if i play guitar sitting down and its pretty annoying but also nice to see because it shows that my hair is getting longer.
What about the rest of you?

Yeah man! I´m going all in for music and play a lot of guitar. I´m currently in the studio recording my second solo demo. For those who are interested, here are links to my bands and my solo project:

Piano, organ, accordian, bass guitar, bongos...and I sing.
I randomly play guitar (check the link; my hair was shorter then)

Well, i guess i can actually call myself a musician, most often i sing and sometimes write my own songs, i did a song with my cousin and his girlfriend past autumn.
However, i'm not too good with instruments, i do have a guitar wich i practice a bit sometimes, but i want to get better.
The music i most often listen to myself is everything from country to heavy metal:D
You're like me. I used to sing in a band a long time ago, and I wrote some of the songs. I tried to learn guitar and keyboards, but I'm no good at playing anything.
My son is 14 now, and he has always had the best voice in his music class at school. What can I say? Like father, like son! Actually, I don't have a very wide range, so I think he can reach more notes, but don't tell him I said so.
We bought him a keyboard, and he showed some promise, but someone broke into our house and stole it, as well as one of our televisions. So far we have never got any money from our insurance either. I will apologise in advance to anyone here who works in insurance, because I think insurance companies are bigger crooks than the burglars.
I should add that my daughter, aged 10 now (who can't sing, I'm afraid) learnt to play the recorder in school and wanted to progress to the clarinet, but her friends talked her into doing violin instead. Well, she's no good with the violin, but she can still play tunes on her recorder, so I guess next year the violin goes back and we will get her that clarinet.
Well, that's cool actually, that both your son and daughter are musically talented, as are you:)
In my family there are alot of musicians as well, my father is playing accordion and can play really good and on my mothers side of the family many of her brothers are very talented singers, one of them even won a singing competition in finland recently:D
I'm no good at it, but I really love to play the piano, i learn songs by ear mostly, just an interest
I take a bass course at college and I make electronic music :)
Evil Toaster :)
And I write songs! I have loved music since I was 4 years old. It's a passion bigger than fashion.
^^ Hence the little bird thingy =P
Piano (I am also a piano technician) ...and lately learning to play a Hammered Dulcimer that I built.
I fully endorse your dulcimeric antics.
And regarding music, I've recently (2 months ago) started playing the Piano. Does that count? lol
Guitar. You have to have long hair to by any sort of respectable metalhead.
Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Irish Whistle, Accordion, Sax
I was a music education major in college. We had to learn each instrument type. So I also learned Vocal Singing, French Horn, Trumpet, Flute, Clarinet, Oboe and Drums.
I teach piano now, and give recitals occasionally.

I don't play any instruments, per se, but I have been in various musicals in the past, so my singing voice isn't too bad. ;)

James, The human voice, the original musical instrument can be the most beautiful and the most versatile.
peace, jonalbear
Very true... however, I've been somewhat sick lately with laryngitis, so I think my instrument needs some tuning. ;)
I can play cello and drums, and I can play guitar ok but not that great.
Do I qualify as I can play a clarinet!
Cheers,
John.B
I play drums.
I have waist lenght hair, but after watching American Idol I don't subject anyone on the planet to my singing.
I'm the first to admit I can't sing and shouldn't even try. I wouldn't even think of subjecting my worst enemy to my singing.
I sing pretty well, if I say so myself, but I would never try American Idol.
AFAIK, they set some of the songs for you, so inevitably some of them would not suit my voice. It might be more important on that show to have a wide vocal range and to have a typical pitch, i.e. tenor for a guy. My voice is deeper, and my range isn't very wide, so I would stand a good chance of them giving me something that I couldn't do a good job of.
OTOH, someone who enters a singing career through a more conventional path gets to decide what they sing, so none of that is an issue. I think in that respect it isn't necessarily a realistic show, but it is more an avenue for people who couldn't make it the normal way (not that I'm saying I could, necessarily).
I would say I'm approximately a baritone. I sing in a similar range to Bing Crosby and Johnny Cash. I can also go an octave down from some female singers and come out in a comfortable range. Think an octave below Janis Joplin or an octave below Chrissie Hynde. The stuff you hear on American Idol I could never hit the top notes.
I play bass [electric and upright], guitar, keyboards, flute, vibes, harmonica [when I don't have a mustache ... the hairs get caught in the metal cover.. ouch!], and I used to play trumpet years ago. Currently playing with a variety of jazz groups in the San Francisco South bay area.
I guess you could say I'm into heavy metal. Lead, tin, and zinc. I'm a pipe organ technician during the day. I know it's a stretch but... oh well!

Animosity, Yes I play piano. Mostly Jazz and Blues. I prefer acoustic piano over electric but do love the sound of a Fender Rhodes electric piano.
btw I played trombone when I was in high school.
peace, jonalbear
I play bass and sing...I've been experimenting with guitar too lately. I have a youtube channel with some of my stuff...
Excellent query you posit, Animosity, as there are so many of us whose talents lie in many diverse musical realms; it really heartens me to read the thread ya start'd here and see how much musical talent there is in our membership.
Talent in both the visual arts as well as in music runs in my family. As I state all over the web, I've got "a freakishly three octave range singing voice", but I play no instruments, whereas my brother, Rob, seen here w/t moustache in a pic w/ me fr. last year (he has a shoulderlength pony tail) plays drums, both jazz and rock, but sings just "OK". But let me tell ya! He does pretty good for someone w/ that high-functioning form of autism, Asperger's Syndrome!

No, but I have given drums, guitar and the bass a shot in years gone by. I have an acoustic and electric guitar, a bass, and I think I still have a decrepit old drum kit buried under a ton of junk in an unused room. I first tried guitar at 10, but wasn't much of a music fan then and quickly gave up. At 12/13 I nailed basic drumming through really short lessons at school, but at that age I didn't have the focus and just stopped playing. 6 years ago when I was 16 I played bass on a horrendous attempt at recording a grindcore album in my friend's living room. I was set to do vocals too but I couldn't help but laugh, so my friend took over. I finally bought an electric guitar a few years ago but I started university soon after and didn't have the time, and really I don't think I have the passion to learn guitar to the standard I would have to reach to be satisfied. I wish I had the dedication of someone like Erik who pushes and pushes every day and sounds awesome.
I am thinking of buying a new drum kit when I finish up with university, as I am constantly tapping and air drumming, and I have a disturbing love for blast beats. My new chair has a massive wobble from all the leg tapping/attempts at double bass I do while sat in it. I'd like to give the piano a shot too at some point.
I definitely want to make music, even if it's for my consumption only, and I reckon I could come up with some reasonably decent tunes if only I had the playing ability.
I'm a guitar player...a Les Paul, a black Strat, a Taylor 12-string acoustic and Ovation 6-string acoustic. I also have a banjo but haven't picked it up in years...just never got into it that much. I also used to sing and have dabbled with the "blues harp."
If I'm not playing music, I get my creative ya-ya's out by editing and producing commercials and promos for my TV station.
I've always associated long hair with creative people.
Take care and keep it growin'!
Brett
I play bass guitar in a few bands. Other than that, I try to whore myself out as much as possible playing fill-in gigs to make extra money.
I play guitar and keyboards for fun.
If anyone wants to see my stuff, here's the link....

I play guitare and I sing. Its been around 5 years now.
I play metal but especialy prog metal. I also ,ove to jam some jazz with my bodies.
I hate when my hair get in my eyes when i play tho >.<
Personally, I've taken piano, violin, acoustic guitar (kinda), and church organ (with the foot keys). As far as singing, I've had people tell me that they never knew anyone who had as much enthusiasm for singing but as poor ability.
Anyhow, somewhere on the web I ran across a group of women who are a band, but many of them have never met any of the others. Those who can, record their parts together, and then they send the .wav (I think) to the next one(s) to add their parts. Would you guys want to try such a thing, just for giggles?

Yea that would be so friggin fun I would be so up for it!
. . . even make a concert'd (yes, pun intend'd!) effort to do a double CD set, comprised all of tracks donated BY all those who contributed to the thread Animosity got start'd here yesterday w/ proceeds goin' ta help support the MLHH, and some amount of a percentage for those who contributed. Voila! Ay?

Sounds like a fun idea. Why not a CD of long hair related songs? We needn't have every member on every song.
Yeah, Elektros. Again, that's yet another quite good, alternate suggestion. I'd contribute my voice to "Almost Cut My Hair" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, or anything by REDD KROSS, a former shaven-headed hardcore punk band that, once they learn'd how ta actually PLAY their instruments, have actually put out some great, Beatlesesque neo-psychedelia . . .
Definitely, maaaaaaaaaaan!

Though no longer active at it, here are the things I did about all of my life:
1. Pianist
2. Concert Organist as well as Choir Director and Organist.
3. Composer of over 150 compositions that made it into print. (Another nearly 150 works never to be published because of cost to the publishers as well as lack of interest in classical music.) They are looking for instant money now and care not of quality.
4. Music Teacher
* My happiest achievement: Being the only American ever to win an award for the publisher Leduc & Cie of Paris France who have been in business since 1842. It is a short piece for Flute and Harp and is being used in the Paris Conservatory. (Performed as well.)
I just looked at your Photobucket. I see you're a Chopin fan. So am I? I just finished a recital of his Ballad #1.
Good to know you're connected.
David
And that Ballad #1, the 1st of 4 I think the most wonderful of all. A fiend to play as are so many of Chopins works, but well worth the effort. NOT as hard to play however on a Piano that dates back to Chopins time as the touch is so light compared to the Pianos full development.
Most interesting is that of Horowitz. He took his Steinway everywhere, and those Steinways are not noted for a light touch. However, Horowitz had his piano regulated just on the brink where the action would be unable to work.........but the touch was as light as a feather making the music much easier under the fingers. I was astonished the one and only time I played his piano.
After Horowitz passed on, his piano technician, Franz Mohr, accompanied the Steinway on a lecture tour discussing Horowitz, his career and his piano. I was able to play it (briefly) at a Piano Technicians Guild Convention, which was quite an honor. I also played Liberace's Baldwin (sort like driving a truck ! HA!)
How interesting White Tail. I once knew Franz back in the early 80's while living in CT. He also tuned Serkins Piano and would drive to an "easier to deal with" Pianist then residing in VT. from his place in NY.
Funny thing. Horowitz would not allow anyone but Mohr to touch his Piano. I was told that "usually" when there was a complaint, Franz would check it out and find no problem. He would then "pretend" as if he had just fixed the newest problem of the moment. And Horowitz would then announce much better when really nothing had been done. Excentric Musicians. LOL :-)
I am !
I play clarinet (& bass clarinet), guitar (a little) and I also began to learn the irish whistle.
Bye
Vivien
I have an old banjo that I toyed with years ago, and I'm trying to get some time to learn guitar (my wife's) but alas, the guitar is keeping the banjo company. Soon.
Bruce
I play guitar....alternative folk/county stuff.
But haven't in a long, long time. I have a beautiful handmade pear wood school recorder made in the former West Germany by Moehr. I don't know if the company is still in business anymore. It's quite old, but I play it once in a while, self-taught. And I have a tear-drom mountain dulcimer that I built from a kit. A mixture of mahogony walnut and oak wood peices. Brass tuning gears with imitation ivory pegs. A labor of love. I did that back in my college days. Oh, the hours and sore hands, filing and sanding all those metal frets on the fretboard (after I hammered them in with a rubber mallet). I used the Jean Ritchie method to teach myself to play. It spends most of it's time in it's case, and it seriously needs tuning. It's a four string with one melody string and two drones, some only have three strings. The four string ones add a piano string to the three guarter strings, giving a richer, fuller sound.
Carol
I definitely play (and sing).
I am an elementary music teacher (when I am not teaching my Kindergarten class) and I have become familiar with most wind instruments. My instrument -the one I studied in university- was the trombone with some time spent on it's valved cousin, the euphonium (like a baby tuba).
I also play some guitar and some piano, but for accompanying my voice my preference is the ukulele. (I've a beautiful Oscar Schmidt, Koa Wood veneer).
Glad to see so many others out there!
Shawn (Mr.Crow)
I'd love to learn how to play the acoustic/electric guitar... I think I'll start this summer after my A levels haha.
I used to want to learn piano too but I don't think I'll learn that anytime soon.
I'm a makeshift organist, mostly self-taught. I've played for a few churches on a regular basis before, now I mostly fill-in and play for weddings 'n such.
I'll include a link to my YouTube channel below... in case any of you are morbidly curious enough to actually watch a few clips.

Alot of my split ends came from me getting my hair caught in the strings O.o. Lol. Yeah I play guitar too. I think my dad was laughing at me one time for getting my hair stuck in the fretboard.
