Reading the thread about the guy who has Norwegian ancestors in the Mormon church, I've got to wondering what kind of people wore their hair long before our time. I know of the Vikings (my ancestors also, a mix of Norwegian, Dane, Swede, and Scot), Native Americans, Indians, and some South American Cultures (Aztec, Maya, etc.).
Does anyone know?
The ancient Celts and the Franks also wore long hair. My ancestry is a mix of Celt, Frank and Native American.
Carol
my ancestory mostly is English,Scottish,Italian so (Celtic,Saxon and some Latin) race all mixed up haha
longhair on my father's side probablyconsisted of dreadlockas and braids if anything, even if you go far back. He's Dominican, but not from the Dominican republic. There's another Dominica somewhere around the Virgin Isles that he's from and then his ancestry goes back to Africa I'm guessing.
My mom's ancestry is Irish, Scottish, English, Lithuanian, with a possibility of slav. There could be longhairs in any of those, I think.
I think lots of ancient guys went about with long hair. Here are three examples from ancient Italy. Traditionally, the Romans are thought to have had short hair, but evidence here and there suggests that at least in the times when Latium (Latio, Lazio) was more heavily influenced by the Etruscan (Tusci, Etruchi, Tyrennoi) culture to the North (the area principally between the Arno and the Tiber) that some guys had longer hair customarily.
The Etruscan mirror above shows Mars (Mavors) on the right, maybe Apollo (Aplu) on the left. (Hope no one is offended at Mars in just a cape and boots!) Also, a good many of the Etruscan tomb paintings at Tarquinia etc. show paintings of guys with long hair.
Also, Numa, the second king of Rome is often described as "shaggy" and "unshorn," suggesting longer hair.
"Bis caput intonsum fontana spargitur unda,
Bis sua faginea tempora fronde tegit" (Ovid, 4.589-590;Fasti)
("Twice his unshorn head is sprinkled with spring water,
Twice he touches his brows with a beech frond")
Further, Juvenal writes: "O dear me! What a meal! You are give wine that fresh-clipped wool wouldn't soak up. The great man himself drinks a brand bottled in the days when the consuls wore their hair long" (V).
A few months ago, I made a post here about Spartan longhairs:
''This is SPARTA!!!''
The Chinese wear their hair long for thousands of years, when the country is either constantly at war, or being ruled by a single Emperor (circa BC3500 to AD1911). In the years prior to the Manchurian rule (before AD1644), the male Chinese wore their long hair in either a single braid, half-tail or free-flowing (with front hair combed and secured behind). Sometimes, a top-knot is made (this style was very commonly used for imperial scholars). The ladies have more elaborate styles (much like those in Europe, but styled using oriental hair ornaments). Hair-lengths are, on the average, to their waist and up to floor-length (for both genders). But during the Manchurian rule (AD1644 to AD1911), the males were forced to shave their front hairs and keep a single braid. This style was known as the "queue". The act of having their front hairs shorn is to signify submission of the "Han" Chinese, to the Manchurian. It is also claimed that, by shaving off the front hairs, the warriors would have a better advantage during melee combat they have no front hairs to come loose and be pulled by their opponents! It is only after the Chinese Revolution (AD1911), that short, cropped hair was adopted, as dictated by the communists (in a sign of rebellion and victory over the feudal system).
Hi, Jin--
I am also of Chinese descent. Wearing my hair long makes me

My ancestory is from Europe with probably some Native American ancestory mixed in as well, on my mother's side.
