After announcing a likely trip to San Francisco two weeks ago, I was sent to Arkansas on short notice to assist FEMA with recovery from the February 5th tornado outbreak. Our mission was expected to last for 30 days; however, we were able to return home after only nine days on duty because recovery work is being transfered to a contractor. So the trip to San Fancisco (actually, Pacifica) is on again! I'll be busy with the training during the work week, but plan to hang around through the following weekend playing long-haired tourist.
The people watching is always interesting in Berkeley. I see more longhairs there than in San Francisco. Telegraph Avenue near UC Berkeley is a walkable few blocks from the downtown Berkeley BART Station and has vendors lining the street. There's a man there who makes many kinds of metal hairsticks, slides, and other hairtoys who is fun to talk to and happy to let people try things on.
