I've decided to trim my hair. It's only grown an inch since october, so I think it's time get rid of the damaged ends that keep breaking off. If I do trim it, should I have half an inch or an inch cut off?
Depends how badly it's damaged. I'm thinking of getting several inches cut off - it's that damaged.
You don't need to get several inches cut off just because some damage. I've only had two trims since growing mine out and it's lower back now.

I know I don't need it per se, but it looks hideous, and really lets the rest of it down.
Why not post an update pic and let us see.
From what I've seen of your hair pictures it looks fine to me and why not let is grow further and see if you really need so much of a trim. Hair can grow at different rates from person to person.
