I'm almost at a year of growing from a GI cut. With perseverance and help from you guys I've been able to let it grow. For the past couple of months I've been waking up to a tangled, knotted mess of hair in the back. I don't know why this happens so easily since I comb my hair every day. I usually detangle, then comb with lotsa conditioner in the shower. Any recommendations (products, tricks, etc.) for what I can do to help alleviate this problem? Thanks.

sleep on your stomach
If your hair is long enough you can put in a loose ponytail, or if that's not possible yet, comb it just before bed. That seem to help for me.

Good morning (afternoon!), Splat, me, too. Ya've gotsta LOVE that tangled mess upon rising in the a.m., don'tcha? What a nice time-waster, undoing gnarls by hand.
Bruce is righ t, thought; try a pony tail B4 retiring. I often do the bee butt bun thing myself. I'm a big tosser-turner during sleep. The other guy's right, too. Try sleepin' on yer stomach.
I'msure other people here SWEAR by detanglers. I just ain't got the disposable income for it . . . butcha can BET that I'm not gonna sheer my hair, not after havin' jus' got several inches below my collarbone!
Good luck w/t tangles issue and keep goin' ang growin'!
Q.
A ponytail on the back or side of the head is hard for me to sleep on, but I find that putting the ponytail or bun on the top of the head works.
This happens to me quite often as well IF I sleep with my hair loose. What I have to do to prevent this mess is tying up my hair in a loose ponytail. I still get a few tangles but not as many as I do if I sleep with loose hair.
I suppose a ponytail would be uncomfortable if you sleep on your back, but that is not the case with me since I happen to sleep on my side. Also, if your hair is long enough, A segmented-pontytail would prevent his. Hope this helps.
I sleep with a hat on, seems to help. Ridiculous as it sounds a hair net or those skullcap things rappers wear can be a big help too.
Thanks for the recommendations, guys. I don't think I'd be comfortable wearing anything on my head while sleeping so tying it back's not an option. BTW, I did try a suggestion I read on the Web; 1/4-cup white vinegar to 1-cup warm water applied between shampooing and conditioning. It didn't work for me. I tried it twice today and I didn't notice anything. I'm going to try leaving in some conditioner overnight and see what happens. I'm crossing my fingers. :)

Well, I tried leaving in conditioner overnight and still waking up with a tangled mess, though slightly better than before. Next I'll try using an actual detangler before sleeping and see how that goes.
