I'll be arriving in S.F. early on Monday morning (Feb 25th) and proceeding directly to the training site in Pacifica. Due to the limited public transit and the long training days, I expect that I'll just stay in Pacifica until the end of the training at 11 AM on Friday. At that time, I'll be moving to a Motel 6 near the airport for Friday and Saturday nights before returning to Phoenix on Sunday morning. I'll have Friday afternoon and evening, and all day on Saturday to play long-haired, earring wearing tourist! I did some of the usual "tourist stuff" on my only other visit to S.F. - Golen Gate Bridge, Miur Woods, Fisherman's Wharf, Downtown, etc. This time, it would be really interesting to just ride the buses around and wander through some of the area's where long hair, dreadlocks and shops selling body piercing jewelry are common. I'm always on the lookout for interesting jewelry to stuff into my ears. I visited the Haight once, but my time there was far too short. If any of the MLHH S.F. guys (and gals?) have some free time, it would be really nice to have someone to wander around with. Besides, if I don't get some help figuring out the transit system, I fear that I may never see Phoenix again!
I still haven't figured

During the day Friday and Saturday, I'll be operating vintage streetcars on the Embarcadero (Ferry to the Wharf). I am free evenings (Friday after 8ish, Sat after 7ish).
Bill
Currently, of the vintage cars, 130, 952, 228, and 737 are operable, so I operate those. If nothing is available or I lack my conductor, I drive regular Milan or PCC equipment.
It's a shame so few of the vintage cars are now running. I've ridden the first three you mentioned, but not the 737. I'll have to look for it! I have not seen the vintage cars up here in the Castro in quite a while, and you mentioned the Ferry Building, so I'm presuming the vintage cars are being turned back there?
Do they take them in and out of the yard via Church Street? If we see them there, can we board? I know at one time streetcars were considered in service even if going to or from the yard, but is that still the rule now?
Of course we see lots of the PCCs and Milans up here. That green Milan caught my eye recently; that was a surprise!
Bill
Generally, the vintage cars shuttle between the Ferry and the Wharf. Sometimes they will go to 11th St. Officially they are not allowed to go to Castro (since some of them may derail on the curve into Market, supposedly)...very rarely I'll take 737 up to Castro to help out the supervisor.
Yes, and officially they are in service, but as with F-line pull-ins and pull-outs, most operators are Not In Service on Church St. ... As much as anything, it takes much longer in service, and the schedule is designed for not in service running. I will pick up kids and people I know even if my conductor prefers not to. And by prior arrangement, I am more than happy to take people to or from the yard.
Yeah, we now have Milans in all the color schemes...the Yellow and Cream original, the two tone green Mussolini scheme, and the post '62 safety orange.
Robert
amusingly, I was up at the Castro end of the line today with 737!
The Haight is pretty dead except from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is definitely a place to visit in the afternoon.
Chinatown and the Mission District are also great places to look around, but they, too, are best in the afternoon.
From the airport take BART downtown. From there you can get to almost anywhere in town easily on Muni. You can get a transit map in just about any corner store. The official ones are best, although there are other companies who also print them. The bus shelters and subway stations also have maps on the walls. Just be sure if you buy a map to get one that is to scale and covers all of San Francisco. Some handed out to tourists are grossly distorted and omit material that does not relate to the touristy spots.

Thanks for the info, Bill. I'm surprised that the Haight is an "afternoon" place. I would have expected things to start picking up at nightfall, and continue until well after midnight. It would be nice to meet some of the S.F. MLHH members on Friday afternoon/evening, Saturday, or both! It might be best to meet someone at one of the BART stations, then gradually pick up others as we go along. I should have Internet access through Thursday in Pacifica, so the who, when and where should be decided upon by then. I should also have a chance to check out the public transit maps by then.
me, too!! :)
Well, technically, I live in Scottsdale. But I work near downtown Phoenix. Does that count? Phoenix seems to have more long manes than Scottsdale.
well, technically i live in tempe. it's all the same out here. but you're right - phoenix does have more long haired guys than scottsdale. although my boyfriend lives and works in scottsdale, so he's helping you up the numbers a bit. :)
LongManeDude, I'm available for wandering about either day if you are not already booked. Saturday however we have a better change of rustling up more people from the local MLHH contingent. There could be a park meet in the afternoon or something like that then head toward Robert's route to startle his passengers with the number of longhairs who get on at one stop. Once he is off duty we'd have to head for dinner of course, perhaps sushi?

A long hair meet would be nice, but my hair won't seem very long in this group! Especially if Absolom shows up too. I definitely want to get to the Haight and Amoeba Records to see the nicely pierced ears and maybe buy a CD or two. I'm not sure how reliably I'll be able to get anywhere, because I'll probably get on the wrong bus, train, etc. at some point.
