Hey guys,
Seems like every night for the past week or so, I have had at least one dream in which I got my hair cut; not totally buzzed, but rather shortened down to a "normal" guy's style. It's getting quite annoying having these dreams, yet at the same time, I will confess that I have had some lingering thoughts lately about getting my hair cut, for both societal and maintenance reasons.
And, no, I'm not planning on rushing off to the barber. ;)
Any thoughts?
-James
I don't think i've ever had dreams of cutting my hair, but i have dreamt that my hair was considerably longer than it is now.
Sometimes i also have thoughts of going back to short hair again, especially those days when hair is lookin like total crap, however i'm still determined to grow it to my goal length and then decide.
Hi James,
Almost everyone growing long hair has some sort of hair dreams or other, both good and bad. I have not had as many dreams about hair lately though, the last one was quite a few months ago. The good dreams I have had are that I suddenly have hair to my waist, and it was actually one of these dreams a year ago November that encouraged me to keep growing it as long as possible. As for the bad dreams, they are mostly about losing huge chunks out of my hair, oddly, no "cutting" draems.
I am sure the dreams will pass, and just remember that you are doing very well in your journey, and do not yield to the evil scissors!
Take care, and keep it growing,
David
Hi James,
Well we all have dreams about funny things and of course I'm not expert but sometimes when we have things on our minds it can take the form of a strange dream. As a matter of interest what has bought on the thoughts of societal and maintenance reasons. I'm sure at some point we have all had those thoughts. But i stuck to my guns and after all this time I don't have any thoughts or dreams about cutting it. I know your not one to give up and you hair is an amazing statement of how far you have come along so far.
We know how society would like us to look the same and have short hair and there is nothing wrong with being individual and wanting your own appearance.
Cheers,
John.B
I have never had any dreams, or, thoughts about cutting my hair.
Perhaps you are trying to conform to social norms. If so, there is nothing wrong with that, however, there must have been a reason that you wanted long hair in the first place. Maybe you should return to that day you decided to grow your hair long and ask yourself what the real reason was. You have made a lot of progress over time and your hair looks great.
BTW, I'm so short that I kinda look like a wig with legs, but, I never think of cutting it.
take care
jeffrey.
Our daily thoughts manifest in dreams in some form. If you have a desire to cut your hair, it might manifest- or it could symbolize a need for change, and not just with your hair.
I wouldn't rush to the barber, but give it some time to thinik whether you want to or not. Think about how long it's taken to grow and proportionally give some time to think about getting rid of it.
those arent dreams, they are nightmares lol
Hi James, :)
So it seems that you are having dreams about looking like what society expects. My question is how do those dreams make you feel? Do you feel happy in them or sad?
It seems you're at a crossroad of some kind. It could take some time to figure out what that's all about, so I'm happy that you're not in any hurry to visit your friendly neighbourhood barber.
Take care,
Franny
And no worries, as I said, I'm not going to rush out and cut it. I often feel quite depressed in those dreams, but sometimes I do like the way I look in them too. Perhaps it depends on the haircut? lol...
At any rate, I guess I'm not too concerned about it either way. I'll likely get a small trim in May or June (nothing more than an inch or so), and keep growing. Again, thank you all for your support and replies. I really appreciate it. =)

I think it's normal. I recall one or two such dreams around a year or two ago and I remember in the dream being really bummed out then upon waking being relieved.
Hmm, I've never had a dream about getting a haircut.
Sometimes I dream I have hair like James Raymond, though.
We could maybe produce a film called Being James Raymond. It might be better as a YouTube picture and we'd need to go hang out with James to get ideas and explore the concept.
You'd have to pay people to watch it. My life really isn't that exciting...
Oh I don't know...you go to washington d.c. on a lark; you take flying lessons...this all seems like something that could be developed....
Today's episode: James does his laundry and takes a nap. Next week, James goes to the grocery store and reads a news article on healthcare. Stay tuned!
See, that sounds good. I'd like to be able to do my laundry today and take a nap. But I have to go to work. Like I was saying, this sounds pretty good....
Hi James
These thoughts will pass I'm sure. You've worked so hard
to grow your hair out I can't see you cutting it. I dream
of going to the casino and winning every hand of Black Jack
but it hasn't happened yet.
Take care James and
Pleasent Dreams
Kevin
I've had those dreams too!!!
I also wake up a little depressed about it. The dreams seem so real.
I think we're just concerned about staying connected to our own identity.
David
Dreams are just that - ephemera that matters little to real life.
While I do admit to being a bit surprised that you're having any thoughts about cutting given your extremely pro-longhair stance up to this point, I think it's only natural to experience some second thoughts given the negativity so prevalent in society. I've never had those thoughts about cutting but there are times I miss the acceptance of my former social world.
Yes, it can be quite frustrating sometimes, though my hair is certainly not the only thing that has changed over the past couple years. It's really just more of a self evaluation at this point, and trying to figure out what I want for the future. Though I won't deny the fact that my hair is a representation of the difference in the way I look at the world and the way I live my life, as well as who my true friends are. Thankfully, some of them can be found on this very site. =)
There's some sleep research that is leading to the conclusion that dreaming is an important mental process that everyone needs. You may or may not be aware of your dreams but everyone has them and it is now thought that they are an indication of some sort of cognative transaction, perhaps a nightly (or whenever you sleep) storage transaction during which the brain processes the day's experiences and performs some sort of ordering and/or weeding out of what doesn't need to be committed to long-term memory. This is all certainly speculative and doesn't explain the bizarre events that our dreams or at least the ones we recall, contain. they may also be the result of some kind of psychological coming-to-terms-with-events emotional processing too.
In the airy-fairy philosophies, dreams can have meanings that are more symbolic than literal. I dabble, very lightly, in dream interpretation. Dreaming of having your haircut may mean that someone is censoring you or limiting you, not just about hair. Is there another area of your life where you feel this way? In your dreams, who is doing the cutting? Could you feel that this person is somehow limiting you?
When I have dreams with upsetting or disturbing themes, I find that the airy-fairy interpretation is often more palatable than the literal interpretation. LOL
Here are several examples of interpretations of dreams pertaining to hair:
Hair
To see hair in your dream, signifies sexual virility, seduction, sensuality, vanity, and health. It is indicative of your attitudes. If your hair is knotted or tangled, then it is symbolic of uncertainty and confusion in your life. You may be unable to think straight.
To dream that you are cutting your hair, suggests that you are experiencing a loss in strength. You may feel that someone is trying to censor you. Alternatively, you may be reshaping your thinking or ambitions and eliminating unwanted thoughts/habits.
To dream that you are combing, stroking or styling your hair, suggests that you are taking on and evaluating a new idea, concept, outlook, or way of thinking. You may be putting your thoughts in order and getting your facts straight. A more literal interpretation suggests your concerns about your self-image and appearance.
To dream that you have long hair, indicates that you are thinking long and carefully before making some decision. You are concentrating on some plan or situation.
To dream that you are losing your hair, denotes that you are concerned with the notion that you are getting older and losing your sex appeal/virility. You are preoccupied with aging and your appearance. Losing you hair also signify a lack of strength and that you do not possess the power to succeed in an undertaking. You may be feeling weak and vulnerable.
To dream that someone is smelling your hair, indicates sexual curiosity and your need for some sensual stimulation. You have a lot to learn about a relationship. The way yours or someone else's hair smell may remind your of a particular person.
To dream that you are reaching for someone's hair, suggests that you are trying to connect with that person on a spiritual or intellectual level. It also refers to sympathy, protectiveness, and fraternal love.
To dream that the wind is blowing through your hair, signifies freedom to express uninhibited feelings. You are "letting your hair down".
To dream that your hair is white or turns white, indicates that something important has just been made aware to you. It is a symbol of wisdom and insight. The dream may also be a metaphor suggesting that you are feeling "light-headed".
Haircut
To dream that someone is giving you a haircut, suggests that you are experiencing a decreased sense of power. You may feel that you were criticized unfairly.
Hairdresser
To dream that you are a hairdresser, suggests that you are imposing your ideas and opinions on others. Perhaps you need to work on your self-image and improve on your image. Alternatively, it refers to your attitude toward your own sexuality.
To dream that you are at the hairdresser, you are looking to change your attitude. You are ready for change and moving in a different attention.
Do these interpretations sound more plausible than a hidden desire to cut your hair?
Those are the only two that really stand out to me, at least right now. Without going into too much personal stuff, both are quite suggestive of the way things are going in my life. Everything is very much up in the air currently, and I am strongly considering moving out of the US in the next 5 years or so (for financial and business reasons), but as does everything, it comes with a price. Ah well...
I've visited that dream site before and it's interesting to read through some of the interpretations.
