The wonderful Bill here came up with the idea of meeting for lunch this Saturday at All You Knead at noon and then Haight adventuring afterward. All You Knead is on Haight on the north side of the street in the first block east of Ashbury.
I plan to catch up with Trolleypup's streetcar before his run ends around 7 pm and hopefully convince him that he needs sushi unless he has some other idea for wonderful food.
Can anybody explain for LongManeDude how to get to Haight from BART?
Elizabeth
Get off at Civic Center station, go to the surface, and catch the 6 or 71 bus at one of the islands on Market Street. Be sure you catch it outbound (towards the hills) not inbound (towards the bay). The bus will soon make a gentle right turn and then be running on Haight Street. Get off at Masonic Avenue, and walk half a block beyond that intersection on Haight. The restaurant will be on the right in the upcoming block, at 1466 Haight.
Go to Google Maps, enter "1466 Haight San Francisco", and select "Street View" to get an image in front of the restaurant. Seven clicks on the right arrow on the image will get you down to the intersection of Haight and Masonic, in case you want to see what this half-block walk will look like.
I'd allow an hour and a half from the area of the airport, although good connections may get you there in a little over an hour.
See everyone there at noon Saturday!
Bill
And I sincerely hope you don't have to wait 4 hours the way you had to with me last May, and thanks very much for everyone's patience as I almost gave up thinking no one would wait so long.
Thank you so much for this, after talking with my husband we decided we'll get there by BART ourselves too. I'll try to meet up with LongManeDude and we'll straggle in together.
Thanks for the directions! I don't have a printer here, so I've copied the directions to my desktop in case this is the last time I have Internet access. I still haven't been able to check my e-mail since leaving Phoenix. I also considered just getting off the BART at 16th Street/Mission and just hoofing it over to the Haight. I figure the walk would take about 40 minutes. Look for the dude with 25 earrings and multiple nose-ear chains. Chances are it will be me:)
LongManeDude,
If you are still looking for someone to wander around with I'm available Friday too. I never seem to visit SF to look around unless somebody is visiting fromout of the area. I'd even pack a nice brown bag lunch for us if you're tired of eating out while away from home.
Talking to my husband Bill he suggested we BART in to the Saturday meet as well and can meet you at the Civic Center station and bus in together if you don't mind the opportunity to get lost as a small group. Bill Choisser posted simple directions so I think we'd get there after all. My husband and I are both happy walkers too, you do get to see more that way and could meet you to walk in together.
I'm throwing all those ideas out there so you know you have options and to take advantage of the visiting time while you are here. If you are already set that's great too and I'll see you at noon at the restaurant.
Elizabeth
It would be nice to have some company on Friday too, but I wouldn't be available until well after lunch time - something more like mid-afternoon. Good food has been hard to find in Pacifica, so I'm certainly not tired of dining out yet. Aside from wandering around Market Street or the Mission/16th Street area, I really haven't come up with much for Friday yet. Bill mentioned a neighborhood called So-something or other, but I can't find it on my city map. We'll probably be best off arranging meetings at restaurants, since I'm not really sure how fast I'll be able to get anywhere. As active as the flu is supposed to be, I don't know anyone who has, or has had, the flu this year!
I'll have lunch with my Bill and then can meet you on the Ferry Building end of Market street. You can pop out of BART at the Embarcadero station and walk the short distance to the Ferry Building. There is a nice seating area inside there by Peet's Coffee and I can happily read, slurp, and watch the water until you make your way there whenever it ends up being. How's that sound?
So might have been SoMa, 'South of Market'.
Elizabeth
I think it was So Ma! The Ferry Bulding will work great, since that is one landmark I could actually find on my city map. I'll be moving to a Motel 6 just north of the airport early Friday afternoon. Dealing with BART should be no problem, but I still need to figure out the bus lines to and from a BART station. Please bring a decent transit map/schedule if you have one. One of my concerns will be getting stranded by a bus line that stops running by the time I'm on my way back to Motel 6. Oh, and it would be great if someone can bring a decent camera on Saturday. I had to bring so much field gear for the training that I didn't have any room for my photography equipment. Look for the longest goatee you've ever seen, and chances are I'll be attached!
I get concerned about when things stop running too. I just found this for you on the BART.gov website.

Added to your earlier directions it is guaranteed I'll recognize you! "Look for the dude with 25 earrings and multiple nose-ear chains. Chances are it will be me." I won't stand out that much, at least not seated, so I'll wear a favorite hat- a red and gold crown.
See you tomorrow. :-)
Elizabeth
I won't have time to deal with all the earrings and nose ear chains on Friday - they are for Saturday, when all of the other students have departed. So look for the long goatee instead. Actually, it would be nice to look for some new ear jewelry at tattoo and piercing shops!

I would like to come to this, but the flu terror alert level is at red for the whole nation except for Florida, which is at orange.
I would have to drive, since public transit is a disease factory. I would only do the outdoor stuff like walking in the park, or down Haight Street, and stay far from anyone who is coughing. I will not even sit in any enclosed space with many people.
For most, flu is an inconvenience. For me it is potentially life threatening. I have chronic respiratory problems and flu raises my blood pressure to dangerous levels.
Scott
Scott, seeing you after lunch for only outdoor stuff sounds like it would work fine. Rick G. will be doing the same thing showing up later since he has a busy morning.
My Bill and I haven't been sick ourselves so we won't be coughing. I'd love to see you again if you decide to risk it.
Elizabeth
I work earlier on weekends, off by 6, last trip from the Ferry towards Fisherman's Wharf is about 415pm. You have my cell for last minute planning.
I'll certainly call you to let you know if we have broken up in the park and are heading for you or can meet you there. Also, depending on what we get up to I may try to drag LongManeDude to your route Friday.
Cool!
... To request that ya'll take pics that can be posted for the rest of us to see?
I think it is safe to say some will show up of at least some of us. However, when is always the question; Trolleypup has become quite adept at drawing the process out with fun teaser pictures. I know I'd hate to spoil the taunting by posting before him.
I didn't take any pics tonight...so I can't be responsible for any delays.
I hope to see as many of you as possible tomorrow!
But I'm only too tired to tease and too tired to learn the multiple picture in a post thing so I'll just sneak a link in. Too tired to caption them now too apparently.
Suffice it to say fun was had
