I always leave my hair below my head when in bed but I'm not sure now whether the pressure between head and hair could cause overheating and breakage, and should I perhaps have my hair spread all around the pillow so as not to be under pressure?
I sleep with my hair loose and I put it away from my head just because I don't need a night scarf!
I won't worry too much about it, do what's more comfortable to you; however, someone uses a silk/satin pillowcase to prevent too much rubbing of the hair against it.
A lot of it depends on how much you move around during the night. It's not the pressure that can damage your hair, it's the friction on your hair against the pillow that can be the culprit.
A lot of people like to sleep with a braid or a segmented ponytail. However not everyone is comfortable with that at night. You really have to do what works for you, while still being able to get a good rest.
I do suggest a satin pillowcase however. It allows much less nightly friction than the average pillowcase.
Best of luck!

I've been putting mine in a sock bun to keep me from sleeping on my back and snoring.

I always loosely braid my hair for the night. It's the only thing that works for me.
