I know that a majority of people here like metal (though I'm sure not everyone does, it's an observation I've made), but I haven't heard any mention of specific bands or singers they like, from metal or any other genre.
I'm not a hardcore metalhead myself since I have such varied taste in music, but the majority of what I listen to is metal. My favorite bands are Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation (though they're pretty much rock now), In Flames, Apocalyptica, etc, etc.
Other stuff I listen too would be Pink, Emilie Autumn, the Dresden Dolls, Gwen Stefani, Paramore, Evanescence, and a bunch of other stuff.
So how about everyone else?
My favorite metal bands:
Metallica (pre-St.Anger)
Amon Amarth
In Flames
Bloodbath

I like classical songs mainly, and of nowadays the 'commercial' pop types. My favourite music is that from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s (i.e. guitars, synthesisers and cool beats). So that means my favourite bands & artists would be:
ABBA, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, The Beatles, The Doors, Crowded House, Europe, Toto, The Police, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Kylie Minogue, Pink Floyd, The Eagles... (it goes on, but a lot of my favourite songs are one-hit wonders haha)

Gilmores Band!
Do you mean Hep Alien?
No way. I am talking about the famous band of Gilmore dating from the period of the Cival War who Abraham Lincoln himself had heard. I have a number of recordings (cylinder records) made of wax from the late 1800's in which I have heard this band play. And did they ever play great!
And no way would it suffice to list any of the bands(or solo artists) whose music I savor and favor. The roster is simply too lengthy. It careens all over the genre map, too. LOL! But this is very, very interesting, Justin; I'm putting a link (or two) that're associated w/ 'em, this enigmatic Gilmore band.
Uniquely enough, the development of certain genres of music and an upsurge or call to military duty seem to dovetail at certain times in history. The formation of this kind of music MIGHT'VE not been possible without the occurence of the Civil War.
Are ya ever gonna sell those wax cylinder recordings of theirs? Donate 'em to a museum? I've got a few, too. What treasures they are, ay? Wowie wow.

The latter link is the website for enthusiasts of that era's photograph, the daguerrotype, that I also have an extensive collexion of. Care to post some more of your colorised versions, Justin? Your an artist, man, an artist. And I appreciate that.
A shout from the past.
The Q.
Hi Quenyan
Just spent about an hour to come-up with what I will call an "Aristique" rendering in colourization. The Daguerrotype probably is around circa 1845.
I have always admired the Daguerrotype as the best of all despite the fact that it was the 2nd earliest following having the image developed on pewter. Held just right so that the image can be seen (because of the shine of the silver) reveals exquisite detail unlike anything else. The later Tin Type of course was far easier to look at from any angle, but the process was different but the fine detail had been lost a bit. The glass images as well put against a black felt background.
Well, hope you can enjoy a bit of my artistic liberty as seen here complete with a bun. (Now all is longhair related.)
Justin~

I like all the sub genres of metal, although not as much power metal tickles my fancy, progressive rock, some classical and some jazz. I despise -core though.
the most metal music i listen to is Tera Melos or maybe Russian Circles, both of which are definitely not metal. oh, and the "Come to Daddy" single by aphex twin.
i have fairly varied tastes though... electronic (idm, breakbeat/-core, ambient, experimental, drum n bass, jungle, electro, glitch, chiptunes), hip-hop (turntablism, trip-hop, abstract hip-hop, rap), rock (post-rock, alternative)...
of band format only? Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Efterklang, Tera Melos, By The End of Tonight, Deerhoof, The Go! Team, Datarock, Menomena, Múm, Rachel's, Dresden Dolls
guess i really only don't like country and gangsta rap (and 95% of what's on mtv...)
man, now i sound like an elitist hipster :(
My favorites are the Beatles (they inspired me in the 60s to
grow my hair), the Rolling Stones, The Monkees, The Who,
etc. For me music stopped being good after about 1980.

Hail Quorthon! May he rest in Valhalla.
I like industrial music most, e.g.:
harsh EBM/electro-industrial: Combichrist, Tactical Sekt, Psyclon Nine, Funker Vogt, Grendel, Feindflug, Vigilante, God Module, UnterArt, Panzer AG, :wumpscut:, Suicide Commando, Rotersand
futurepop/synthpop: VNV Nation, Assemblage 23, Angels and Agony, The Crüxshadows,
In clubs I like power noise too (e.g. Terrorfakt) but I can't really listen to it at home.
Also psytrance (Astral Projection, Juno Reactor, Talamasca are my favourites).
My favourite metal is folk metal, e.g. Subway to Sally, Korpiklaani.
Sometimes I'll listen to e.g. Rammstein, Dragonforce, Apocalyptica, Metallica, Pantera, Rainbow, ... -- but not much. I like hearing them in pubs/clubs though. Some indie is OK, if I'm in the mood.
I like any music that isnt spilled out of the corporate can! Prog Rock, Alternative, the various metals, death, industrial, symphonic, iron, silver, titanium and aluminium, Celtic, Folk and yes even some country stuff as long as its not too sappy.
