Several people have asked me why I am growing the hair long. I have yet to come up with a good answer? What do you guys tell them?
here's a suggestion: tell them it's because you have such beeeaauuutiful hair that shouldn't be cut ;)
Hi Jeff,
You have outstanding hair, and I was amazed when you mentioned that your age is 57 from the thread below. You are blessed with really thick hair, and a perefect hairline, and your hair is in excellent condition. I hope you grow it to much longer lengths.
As an answer to those who are asking you as to why you are growing your hair long, why don't you give them the simple reply, "Why are you NOT growing your hair long!" Another good answer is, "Because I can!"
Keep it growing,
David
I agree with David. Why is it that long hair is questioned? It is the natural state of things. I personally find the cutting procedure to be more difficult to understand.
Jeff, you have fantastic hair! I hope my hair can look half as good at 57!
I don't know if I had a chance to say welcome Jeff, but hey, WELCOME!! You have a wonderful mane, one to be proud of!
I just tell people who ask why grow long hair that I do it because it feels right and that this is what I want to do! (We do have a right to individuality, don't we?)

Thanks for the compliments~ I plan to grow it much longer. Resources here have been helpful in learning how to care for it! I brush it with one of those brushes that has rounded bristle tips. I find it is less likely to scratch the scalp or shred the hair. I also take it easy on washing, washing it every three or four days. I rinse it in cool water when I shower on the other days. I'm still having trouble getting the hairs from the side areas to stay in the ponytail I wear at work. I've been tempted to use bobby pins, but my social conditioning makes me think it'd be femme to use them.
One item of interest: My brother is totally bald!
I usually tell them that I've always wanted to grow it long. It's just that now I'm mature enough not to care if others disagree with my plans for myself. I also tell them that I want to experience long hair before it's too late to experience it.

Why do you need to justify your actions?
I am 56, have regrown my youthful ponytail and could not be more happy. Sop what does anyone else's opinion have to do with it?
I second DavidH's comment, it's what I tell folks.

Hey Jeff, so, do ya still gotsta, "Chop that mop!", as a co-worker opined in your earlier post to Alex ("Oi, mophead!"), I wonder? You've got seven years on me, and, I must say, as a mostly lifelong longhair myself, you've got a mane of amazingly lustrous, beautifully multi-hued hair, with highlights of chestnut, strawberry blonde, as well as brunette in an otherwise honey blonde base, and its condition is clearly very healthy and well maintained. People! How DARE they say anything against you!
Definitely two thumbs up from me, Jeff. You must keep it goin' and growin'! You're a testament to the whole long-haired spirit. Ace. Truly. Beautiful achievement.
Yours in longhair'd camaraderie,
Quenyan
I am not growing it. God or nature is growing it. I'm just the guy who ISN'T cutting it.
"Why am I growing my hair long?" "Becuase i want to."
That is all you need to say.
Couldn't have said it better!
Good God! I happen to be a little younger than you but if I were your age and had such awesome thick helthy lookin hair like your pic I would simply say because I feel like doing so... enough said.
I've recently told people that I am old enough (54) and ornery enough to do whatever I wanted.
And my brother, 7 years my junior, is going bald also! Pisses him off to no end when I introduce him as my older brother!
Hair looks great. Keep up the same; it's working.
Time will put an end to such questions. They get repeatedly asked of younger longhairs even from strangers, but an older longhair only gets them from people who know him and wonder about the change. After each of them has been told, the questions will end.
As for people who are close enough that the asking of such a personal question is appropriate, just tell them the real reason, whatever it is. If it is, "Because I like the look!" that is fine. If someone is not close enough to be entitled to the question, just ignore it. That is the best response to inappropriate questions. But as I said, older longhairs seldom get questions from such people. As to why, my guess would be that people know that mature guys won't take such crap from strangers or mere acquaintances.

I usually just say it's cheaper and safer than a BMW Z3 convertable, or $20,000 Harley. Or I say it's a cheap mid-life crisis. In my case it's true in a sense without getting into tedious soul bearing and it seems to end the questioning.
LOL! That was my thinking when I did the 3-color anime dye job. My choices were: Get a tattoo, get a fancy car, run away from home, take up with a guy half my age, or do something fun with my hair. The hair was the easiest, the cheapest, and would be the least painful to get rid of when I tired of it.
Anime hair
right; i guess it gives people the idea that you are merely doing something different to have some fun (whether that's entirely it or not) and reassured, they move on. Amazingly, some people are genuinely disturbed by men letting it grow as they think the worst, that the man has become an ax murderer, maybe because of James Brolin in the Amityville Horror, or something else as bad.
Great hair! Your answer should be: "because it looks awesome!"
