Although I rarely see the Maury show, I happened to catch the end of a show about cutting floor length hair. Nearly all the featured haircuts were for women. However, the last person was a man who was cutting his four foot long hair because his nine year old daughter was embarrassed of him. His wife was not very happy to see him cut his hair, but he did anyway.
Why is it that it seems the only acceptable "makeover" for a man with long hair is to cut it off? Has anyone ever seen a show like this, where the solution was not to cut off all of a man's hair, but to style it? Also, has anyone else felt a need to cut his hair due to a similar reason?
Maury is obsessed with childrens sexual behaviors. Every other show features teen sex addicts or something of that nature.
I find the Maury show disgusting. As Scotmans says, nearly every other show has to do "teen sex addicts" or similar topics obviously chosen for sex appeal and/or shock value . Another favorite topic of Maury's is longhair "makeovers". Theses "makeovers" are ALWAYS about chopping off the long hair. They also use the person's "friends" to verbally abuse the person until they finally allow the hair to be cut off, and the poor person nearly always ends up in tears.
Just as the shows in which "out of control teens" (does anyone really believe these stories?) are sent to boot camp aren't really about helping kids have better lives, these "makeovers" are not about helping the person involved look or feel better, or be more "in style". Instead they are about getting ratings and appealling to the lowest portions of the television audience.
The people on these shows have spent years growing their hair out, no one should try to talk them into cutting it if they don't want to. Sometimes they are accused of being selfish if they don't donate the hair to charity. But, the charity that the hair is supposedly donated to, Locks Of Love, has been proven by it's own statistics to be a fruad (I don't have all the information, but if anyone wants to know more, it's nearly always being discussed on the board at www.tlhs.org). Even if it wasn't, donations should be of the person's own free will, not because they were bullied in to it.
It would be nice to see an end to these type of makeover programs, unfortunately, it doesn't appear very likely that that will happen anytime soon.
I was going to post on this subject. I saw a promo for the show and took a look a it. The man HAD beautiful hair...it was to his waist and was very well taken care of...I would kill for hair like what he had. It was a real shame to see some narrow minded stylist whack through his ponytail with sissors...he even had the daughter start the cutting.
Maury had some brilliant tings to say...like "didn't ypou think you should have hair shorter than your wife" and "if your daughter didn't like your hair why didn't you cut it?". Plus the moron audience made their comments.
First off this, I believe teaches the wrong values to the daughter. She would have been better off being taught how to deal with the comments from her friends (?) and learning to accept people for who they are and not for their appearance...this includes her father.
The wife seem very upset and really not happy with the final results...of which I felt make the man look older...plus it wasn't even a good haircut...looked like the bad hair phase that we all have to go through.
The man said he went from a crewcut to the long hair becasue as he was growing it he really liked it even though he was ribbed about it from co-workers.
It is shows like this that hurts longhaired men. Women not as much as females are accepted with long or short hair...but this does nothing but to express the misguided opinion that men are suppose to have short hair.
Some men would have their looks improved by having longhair but I have never, nor will we most likey ever, see a show about this.
Writing to the Maury show or others show will do no good...they only care about ratings...but we can help by voicing our displeasure with the themes of these shows but writing or calling our local TV stations that carry the program.
On another subject...a longhaired man called the local radio talk station here in Binghamton New York to voice his concern bout a new New York State law which allows the police to pulled over someone who they supect may have drugs for a minor traffice infraction (like you didn't put your turn signal on early enough) based upon their looks. He felt that because he had longhair he would be subjected to such searches...and he is right. I myself was once pulled over and searched because I had a air freshener hanging from my rearview mirror...I was told it obstructed my view and was issued a $65 ticket!
Sorry for the rambling...but things like this, along with employment dress codes which are different in regards to hair length for men and women really get me going!
I saw this show. Part of the motivation for
pushing this guy to get a hair cut was the motivation
to get donations for "Locks of Love."
I don't know if the show was a repeat, but I think I saw it.
Anything I can say has already been quite eloquently put.
What I do have to ad is that the "Locks of Love" thing is really cute, but they can do just as well with synthetic, which costs very little. The major cost behind a good wig is the labor involved, not the actual hair. I have seen some god awful wigs made out of some gorgeous hair and I have seen some amazing wigs done out of synthetic.
Just my opinion, I think it is an excuse to get people to cut their hair in some instances.
On all those type of shows look at how they bring the audience into it...the show is about conforming to the group. That is why they bring on non-conformists and then beat up on them for an hour or until they change to the liking of the group.
I put a bit on my website about Maury.
As I recall, the Taliban didn't much care for men with long hair either and would single them out and punish them. Maury is a self-appointed setter of social standards and has a national platform to promote it with.
Email him and tell him what an ass he is for saying some of the stupid things he says about long hair.
A lot of the motivation for Maury is to support
the Nazis at "Locks for Love"
