Please, give me some words of encouragement! I passed by Supercuts today and almost went in....The awkward stage who's presencs has been absent so far has hit with a vengence! Those anoying flips are all over the place, and my eyes can't take anymore hair in them! I gotta make it through this!!!!!
Mike, man, coincidentally enough, that's the last place I went, two years past. Ten bucks, right? Dude! They're a franchise that pops up all over the country just to promote and maintain the whole "sheeple" clock-puncher, my-hair-is-short-because-I'm a slave look. I tend to think you're not a "sheeple".
I guess you didn't see my mantra post. "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo", the Buddhist mantra of manifestation, pronounced"nomm me-oh-koh ring gayee key yow" should keep you from cutting. Hey, my recommendation. Chant and focus on your goal of growing your hair long. You will because you've willed it.
Namaste,
Quenyan
Im a ''flipper'' to , I guess you just have to deal with it. I can tell you its realy worth it.
For the hair in eye probleme, it was one of the big matter for me. I just use hats and bandana for a while...when they get longer you can tight them in a tail!
Ayway cheerz up man, and dont take any desition youl regret, dont forget the 2 weeks rule!
Don't know if my advice will be that great since I am one month away from my first year of growing out.
But I can understand at a current state how the awkward stage and be well awkward, there are many times I look at pictures of my short hair remembering how short hair was easier for me to control and get it to do what I want. But what keeps me going is knowing that in another year I will be really close to where I want my hair to be and that if I cut it now the year I went through would be for nothing!
What I keep on doing is (this may sound silly) but make a game out of how to handle my hair. There are days I will wear my fedora hat, thanks to a member on the board for inspiring me to wear one. Other days I tie it back a in my sad attempt to have a tail. :-) And just for the fun of it there are days I just let it all out, and funny enough I really have enjoyed it and even had a few nice comments on it.
All I can say is Hang in there man, I know there are good and bad days with the awkward stage, but hey isn't that the truth with just everyday in general! You can have a great day and other days just seem will poopy (trying not to use bad words).
And all one can do on those bad days is try to make the best of it.
And my biggest advice (Your hair isn't as bad as you think it is! Just quit thinking about it and you would be amazed at how good it can look, and how much better it will look in another year.)

If ONLY you were able to not worry about filps etc. associated with the awkward stage and learn to enjoy it, your troubles would be over.
For some of us, the Awkward Stage was really alot of fun. (Kinda wild and a new look every day.) And, some of those new looks can be really neat along the way. :-)
Perhaps look at it this way. You are trying to get from point A to point B. However, to get to point B simply means that one HAS to go through an Awkward Stage to arrive there. There is NO way around it.
By accepting the inbetween stage and learning to enjoy it will actually make the journey quite a bit of fun.
Also, avoid looking in a mirror every time you pass by one.
Time goes fast. Just let it grow and the rewards at the end you will find ever so worth it. If you "Cave-in" to a haircut now, in time you will be right back to where you are now.
You CAN do it!
All the best-
Justin~
I agree! We've all had the hair everywhere syndrome and when hair flipped into my line of sight I would think, "WOW, my hair is getting really long! NICE!"
And remember this,"Just deal with it, everytime I let it grow in the past, it always had to reach a certain length before the flips calmed down"? YOU said it! So hang in there Mike, there's rewards on the other side.
Keep on growin'
Bruce
I meant to say "Those were your own words" instead of "YOU said it"
Buy a hat and don´t go cuting it.
Kinda simple. ;)
Mike, just don't worry about the flips. I'm thinking that the hair in your eyes is the worst problem and I can relate because I just grew my bangs out for the first time last year, and it was hard.
I agree with those who suggest bandanas and hats, and if you have to go somewhere where those are inappropriate, then gel is your best friend right now to keep that hair out of your eyes.
Other than that just keep chanting "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" along with Quenyan and me, and any others who rock the chant.
This phase will pass, my friend. Just hang on.

You may not be a hat person but I suggest you try becoming one.
Kevin
Sometimes haircutters shops are so tempting to go in...
But seriously.
It's all a matter of resisting the temptation!
Eat a chocolate. Or wear a hat. Or go and wash your hair again. I do these things because since my hair is curly, my awkward stage is horrible; I have this big, out of control AFRO (I'm not joking)
So honestly, you really shouldn't worry, especially since your hair is so straight.
To get flips out of your eyes, tuck your bangs sideways under more hair, or hold them up with your hand while youre writing someting or looking down. Or. Gel those bits backwards :P
Hope it works!
Shawn
I know this might not be considered the best advice because it could damage your hair but I'm in the middle of the awkward stage right now and the way I'm getting through it is using a straightener, it's probably the only thing that's kept me from cutting my hair.
What brand of straightener are you using? Thanks for the help guys, This is the best place to come if you feel like doing something stupid like getting a haircut! You guys are great. :)
I use a Remington, I find it works really well, it can get my hair under control in only a few minutes and you can adjust the temperature settings on it too. If you do start using a straightener just be aware of the damage it can do to your hair.
Where can I get it at???
Do not do that, honestly. The awkward stage is tough, yes, but I got through it. If I can do it, you can. If you do cut your hair, you will deeply regret it, Mike. Hang in there.
Long hair forever.
Hegg
Styling gel. Slick it straight back. I know this is not for everybody, and some say it damages your hair. I used it sparingly, and on occasions where I thought it would be more of a hassle to have it look messy, or to have to push it out of the way. If you have the drugstore chain called CVS, there generic brand (it's green) works very well and has a nice clean smell. This is what I used. I only had to buy one or two bottles to get through the entire awkward stage.
Your complaint is very common.
Rest assured the awkward stage is only temporary. So many people on this board have passed through the awkward stage and lived. You will too.
Then, once your hair becomes long enough to stay out of your face, you can look forward to years of trouble-free hair growth (*).
Ed
(*) At least until the second and third awkward stages (sitting on one's hair and stepping on one's hair, respectively). We'll cross those bridges when we come to them (;-)
Hats are your friends. :3
Keep in mind that the "growing out" phase will pass. Find a picture of what u want your hair to look like. When u get that urge to cut ur hair, look at the picture. Remind yourself of what the end product will be =D...
Might sound silly, but it works for me.
Take care and block out the cutting impulse!
Aubrey
Hi Corvettemike,
Just hang in there, and some of our members have given you excellent suggestions already. The awkward stage is something ALL of us go through as we grow our hair, but it dose not last forever. The rewards are well worth the journey in the end.
Keep it growing,
David
I'm a man of few words, so here they are: DON'T DO IT--THIS TOO SHALL PASS!!!
The thing is Mike, we have all had to go through it, every single one of us, and you just have to either enjoy it or ignore it.
Don't give up.
Cheers Dave
Put one of those fat rubber bands around your wrist. Everytime you get the urge to head into Supercuts, pull it back and let it snap against your wrist, it'll sting like the devil, and you'll forget all about wanting to cut your hair. :-)
Painfully yours...
I heard about that before, except it was when I was 350 pounds and went anorexic to loose weight, the pro ana boards had that technique whenever you think about eating....It does work, got me down to 180.....:} Howerever, I did need to start eating regular again when my kidneys started to shut dowm from lack of food....
...just forget about your hair. Don't even worry about it. Thinking about it too much will just prolong the growing process. Put it in the back of your mind and deal with it when you must, but if you just forget about it, it will be long before you even realize it. Trust me, that's exactly what I did and it all worked out fine :)
