Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Bourne Identity
The Dark Crystal
Labyrinth
El Mariachi
Tango (1998) -- full title is Tango, no me dejes nunca
Como Agua para Chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate)
Lord of the Rings
Someone mentioned "It's a Wonderful Life". I've never seen it.
Yes. I used to count how many times it showed during the season and compare it to the number of showings of "Miracle on 42nd Street", which I haven't seen either.
I can't think of 10 but here is a few...
-Evil Dead I
-Evil Dead II
-Evil Dead III
-Haxan
-The Lord of The Rings - all III
My favorites, along with EdG's one-line critic:
2001: A Space Odyssey
Arguably the best sci-fi movie ever made. "Open the pod bay doors, HAL".
This is Spinal Tap
Could almost pass for a real documentary. "This one goes to 11".
Star Wars (Episode 4: "A New Hope")
Set a new standard for special effects. The world had never seen anything like this before (in 1977).
Contact
I like Carl Sagan's work. This is a believable account of what an encounter with extra-terrestrials would be like.
Forrest Gump
My girlfriend made me watch this. I was impressed - it was very memorable.
The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming (thanks for reminding me of this movie White Tail!)
A Russian submarine runs aground in New England at the height of the Cold War. I find Cold War era stuff fascinating.
Forbidden Planet
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Sci-fi classics from an era when the story was more important than the effects.
Hair
Required viewing for longhairs. The movie doesn't quite live up to the legend.
Airplane
Probably has the highest density of jokes of any movie. Airplane appealed to me when I was a teenager. I probably couldn't sit through it today.
Ed
Maybe. Maybe not. The main problem with 2001 is they needed
to make all three into movies (2001, 2010, 2060.)
I would include 4,5,6,1,2, and 3.
Forget the movie. Too bad you can't see it on Broadway.
Don't forget Shatner in Airplane 2.
not all my favorites but what come to my mind!
1. all Jay and Silent Bob Movies esp Clerks!
2. Cheech and Chong Movies
3. Scarface

Lord of the Rings Series
Shaun of the Dead
Reservoir Dogs
Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2
Van Helsing
Silence of the Lambs
House of a Thousand Corpses and The Devil's Rejects
High Tension
As you can see, I lean more toward the macabre side. Also that is more than ten movies! LoL Brian
Hey there is nothing wrong with horror movies!!! I love'em! I must say that, House of 1,000 Corpses/The Devil's Rejects, scared me. Scared meaning, disturbing. I thought that Zombie did a great job! =)
Hey Aubrey, there shouldn't be a heresy committed here because you're asking a longhaired membership as to what their top ten films are. I'm longhaired and these are my top ten films:
Jason and the Argonauts (1963)
Hour of the Wolf (1968)
Les Contes d'Hoffman (1951)
Le Belle et la Bete (1946)
Orphee (1950)
The 39 Steps (1935)
The Birds (1963)
Lord of the Flies (1963)
Jack the Giant Killer (1962)
Blood and Chocolate (2007)
Of course, there are many others that rate as my favorite films, but those are my immediate top ten, bar none. Thank you, Aubrey, for posting this thread. As one longhaired film-lover to another I'm sure you'll find something of interest in my list.
For cineametophilia and longhaired camaraderie,
Quenyan
OK, but I'm not big on "favorites". Number 1 is always a dissapointment, so let's just say that these are all in the top-10. I was slightly prejudiced by reading a few entries, and decided to stop before that got out of control:
1. Star Wars, Episode IV, V, VI in decreasing order. As EdG said, we never saw anything like it before. The 2nd round of SW flicks don't even deserve to be anywhere near this list, but perhaps my view is colored by the fact that the first 3 spanmed 6 years from my childhood to young adulthood. I'm cheating and counting this as one entry.
2. Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Once again, probably a generational thing. I'm not sure how well this would hold up.
3. The Blues Brothers. Every other line quotable, the best car chase in movie history, an all-star cast. Music. What more could you want?
4. Lawrence of Arabia. Once again, sweeping music, fantastic landscapes, and powerful history.
5. Repo Man. This is considered a "cult film". It should work well on DVD, check it out.
6. War Games.
7. Harold and Maude. Very off-beat. Arguably "goth" before the term was even used. This flick would ocassionaly get used as filler in the wee hours of the morning on NBC affiliates back east, and that was how I first saw it.
8. Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
9. Field of Dreams. I'm not the least bit ashamed to admit I teared up a bit.
10. ET. Also a tear-jerker. Why is that? A lot of people say that.
I know I'm leaving out some good flicks here; but these are the ones that popped into my head.
I would include all six films. I enjoyed them all.
But then I was there opening day in 1977.
I would say only the original. The recut version killed it
when they removed the critical scene. (The living room scene.)
It goes without saying that "re-cut" anything, ruins it. Why do the studios waste their time with that? OK... answering my own question here: because something different under the same franchise generates more sales. It's a shame though. So, just to make this clear, anything on my faves list is going to be the *original* version as released in theatres. Wierd little rings around explosions and a few extra CGI creatures *subtract* value from Star Wars IV.
You bet. I was in Guatemala at the time. This is significant, because Guatemala usually gets only second run movies (meaning the movies run their schedule in the US and then when everyone in the US has seen them, they ship the films off to places like Guatemala).
Star Wars was different, though. In Guatemala it was advertised quite a while: "Filmado en Guatemala" (filmed in Guatemala). The secret rebel base operations were filmed in the Mayan ruins of Guatemala. That was enough to get the movie release in the first run schedule. I don't remember for certain, but I'm pretty sure it was English with Spanish subtitles.
For those of you who are too young to understand the huge leap forward Star Wars IV brought to the movie industry, I suggest renting Star Wars IV and The Black Hole. These two movies were fairly contemporary and in the same genre. The Black Hole movie used state of the art techniques. Star Wars used a whole new level of movie making.
1. The Shawshank Redemption
3. The Time Machine
4.5.6. The Lord of the Rings 1,2,3
5. Kung Pow
7. Jackie Chan - City Hunter
8.9.10. The Matrix 1,2,3
I'm sure I'll miss a few, but here are some of my faves:
Last of the Mohicans (there is some exceptionally nice longhair on men in this movie)
LOTR trilogy
Chronicles of Narnia
Ladyhawke
The Man From Snowy River
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Braveheart
Gattaca
(Men can just stop reading this post here, since everything below this line is well into the "chick-flick" department.)
Amelie
A Room With A View
Snow Falling On Cedars
Not necessarily in this order but close.
Full Metal Jacket
The Grapes of Wrath
Clockwork Orange
The Great Escape
Schlindlers List
Bridge On The River Kwai
Brazil
Barbarella
Slaughterhouse 5
High Anxiety
I can't can keep this down to 10!
In every case I always prefer the original over any re-make, but in some cases I have noted that I mean the old version, because some people may not be aware that what they have seen is a re-make.
Harvey (old version)
Arsenic and Old Lace
The Lady Killers (old version)
The Lavender Hill Mob
The Road to Bali (and all the other 'Road' films)
Flying Deuces
The 39 Steps
Star Wars
It's a Wonderful Life
The Sword in the Stone
101 Dalmatians (old version)
Bridge on the River Kwai
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
Joe and the Volcano
Mon Oncle
Mr Smith Goes to Washington
The Wizard of Oz
Psycho
Way Out West
I guess that's my Top 20!
As you may have figured, I like almost anything with Jimmy Stewart, or with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, or Laurel and Hardy, or with Sir Alec Guinness, or directed by Hitchcock or Kapra or Jacques Tati. There are many more I can't even think of.
I also like the silents, and some of the artists that switched from silents to talkies (basically the comedians - nobody seems to remember silent straight actors much). I just bought a DVD of 'College' with Buster Keaton, but I haven't played it yet, so I can't really remember if it's a good one.
