Hi folks!
I'm talking to "future longhairs", i.e. to those who are growing from short.
First of all, I don't want to sound polemical, but just give a 2 cents advice, as one who's been there.
I see a lot of posts on "How long": how long will it take to reach my ears, how long will it take to lay down, how long will it take to reach the jawline, to fit in a ponytail, to reach waist length, etc. Now, this seems a little bit obsessive to me, and too much focused on the final destination.
I mean, if you start from bald, or generally if you start growing your hair from a short-ish length, you are aware that it will take its time to reach the length you want, and this means years.
This said, spending some year just watching one's hair grow is quite frustrating, in my opinion: why don't enjoy the progress?
What I'm trying to say is that there's a lot of fun in experimenting hairsyles while your hair grow, and that the awkward stage isn't so awkward, you can comb it downwards, upwards, spike it, make it flat or fluffy, a beehive, a fauxhawk, everything you want!
Or just ignore it, don't think about it.If you have flips to the sides, let the flips be, it could be next year's fashion. And I could give more examples.
Try not to focus on the destination, but on the journey: it will be funnier, more enjoyable and yes, faster!
One day you'll look in the mirror and say oh, who's the longhair there?
Or put five bands in your segmented ponytail and laugh, thinking of when your bangs wouldn't stay in because of that last quarter of inch; or...I'm becoming loghorroic, I hope everyone has understood my intentions.
Happy growing to all!

Hmm, I didn't check on a dictionary; thanks for the correction!
I'm glad you agree!

Well, I hope someone will take the advice..!

I believe that the attitude you are describing is something that we all must grow into. I started growing my hair from scratch, and back then I was thinking about having long hair all the time! And I think the same goes for the beginners we get here.
You are right in what you say, but it took me over a year to actually get that attitude. Today, sure I think about having it longer now and then, but not much at all.
I remember asking the questions you mentioned, about how long it will take and such. I think it´s just normal to ask all that when you start out.
My point is, the final destination as you speak of, is the reason most of us start growing! I don´t think there are many who starts to grow it long just because of the journey there, so of course the newbies will focus on the destination! And of course it seems like eternity to get there. :)
Erik,
of course having long hair is what we all aimed, it's our goal and final scope.
But since, how you well said, it seems like eternity, and it's something one has to pass through, it's worth trying to make this eternity more enjoyable!
I know it's not simple when you have something in mind - I remember the sensation of the bangs that don't fit in the ponytail or annoying things like that, I was there!
Hi ale !
A lot of good points here !
Strangely, my personal experience is a little different: During the beginning of my hair growth, I remind me being, hum, indifferent is the most appropriate term. I didn't see any sort of goal, so I didn't feel frustration. My hair grew, that's all.
After (last year in fact) it was the opposite : totally obsessed with hair. Now, it's behind. I'm zen.

Speaking as one in the middle of the awkward stage, your points ring very true. I describe my awkward stage as..."surprisingly not awkward." One thing I've found is to not fight the natural growth direction of the hair, that is letting it lay for the most part in the direction it grows. In my case that means bangs or a fringe over my forehead, something I've not had for many a year. (YMMV)
Of course, one bad hair day can temporarily erase this good feeling. Especially if one is comparing the way (longer) hair behaves to short no-maintenance styles. I try not to do that.

Well I'm a former long hair right now its just touching the collor now in the back and bangs are about an inch past my chin. Now formorly my hair was down to my nipples, went to get just a little trim for a job interview and he wacked half of my bangs off just at the bottom of my ear lob about a month ago againest my wishes I was pissed the F off (mom made me pay him i'm only 19, couldn't even put it a ponytail) and the only reason i didn't stick the scisors through his hands like three other people who came close with sharp objects with my hair is also because my mom was getting her hair cut after me. Now i don't know if its really short but to me it is I spend a year growing it that long My hair does grow fast about 3/4 to an inch a month. Nowwhat i need is tips on how to grow Long hair down to my knees thats the kind i want and to go along with it a long ass beard to also go down to my knees sorta like ZZ Tops but alot more beautiful like my hair. Any tips on growing it that long is welcomed I need it. Also is keeping your hair in a bandana a good way of keeping your hair out of the way until you can put your bangs in the pony tail again.
