Hi everyone,
I was very glad to find this message board after a lot of research on the Internet - there seem to be a lot of helpful people here so I thought I'll post my problem and get some advice.
I have been wanting to grow my hair for a long time. But because I have curly hair, I have never been confident about growing it. This time I'm going for it - for the first time. You can see my picture which is just over a month after a short hair cut. I'm not really sure how to best describe my hair so I've posted a picture - they are thick and curly, but not that curly. When cut short, they are wavy and get more wavy and they grow.
Here's the problem:
1. I will appreciate advice/guidance - I have never grown my hair long so I don't know how they will look longer. Are there others here who have the same hair as me who can advise me how the hair will eventually look when long? You can see my picture to see what my hair are like - the picture was taken after waking up and combing dry hair (not very neatly). I want to grow no longer than shoulder length really (sort of covering the neck, that's it).
I would be very happy with a look similar to this:

But I DON'T really want to have a look like this eventually:

2. Also, would you say my hair is FRIZZY?
Any help/advise will be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Johnny.

p.s. disclaimer - for record (as stated in forum rules), I don't want my picture used for members gallery etc.. simply because it looks horrible at the moment ;-(
Hello Johnny, Welcome here !
First, if you want the length you show in the first photo (which is , here, quite short hair :D), no problem. I don't think it need any special advice, just let it grow until you find it okay. With your hair, you may consider later to grow it longer.
To me, your hair doesn't appear to be frizzy.
And finally, even if I personally have straight hair, I think you won't have very curly hair (like the guy in the second link), but maybe a mix of wavy-curly.
Good bye
Vivien
Just let it grow out and gain the length - that should help it settle.
It might be higher maintenance but it is too early to say. However look at

and

You will see he has very curly hair which keeps to a decent length, no fro and really looks good.
If you're worried about frizz,i'm afraid to tell you that even the straightest hair can get frizzy sometimes. But there are many things you can do to prevent it; like using leave-in conditioners and wearing a hat/making a ponytail when the weather is dry.
Hey man, I also belong to the curly hair club. I've discovered a few things over my journey thus far...
1. Just let it grow. Don't get any trims or anything. With curly hair, it looks different lengths on different days, so trimming serves no purpose, including "evening it out".
2. You'll most likely perceive your hair to be more fluffy, poofy, out of control, etc... than it really is. People really don't consider "big" hair a particularly odd thing these days, and probably won't say anything to you about it for the most part.
3. There are plenty of musicians, actors, etc... who have or have had long curly hair at one point or another. Look around the Internet and get a feel for what your hair will look like in the years to come. It tends to always look magnificent, in my opinion.
Peace,
Ryan
