Hi you all long hairs!
First of all, I'm from Denmark which is equal very bad english!
Ok, here it goes! I have chosen to let my hair grow out, and it has been growing in 9 months now... and i have wondering a lot about the awkward stage!
First of all, what is it?
When will you enter the awkward stage?
When did you enter the awkward stage?
And when will you get through the awkward stage?
Hope you'll wanna help me :-)
Cheers from Denmark!
Hello Dane. It's GREAT having you here. I really appreciate the opportunity to meet people from other countries. I look forward to seeing pictures of your hair growth.
I've just started leaving the awkward phase. There's still remnants of the phase lingering for me. But, it's mostly gone.
For me, the awkward phase started when there seemed to be no way of having control of my hair like I was used to with short kept hair. There are flips and curls to your hair that you've never seen because it's been short. These flips and curls are almost completely uncontrollable. Guys try to gel or spray those flips and curls down. I avoided these methods because I think the chemicals mess up your hair. I opted for a hat most of the time. I also found that I had a small amount of control of my hair if I kept it damp.
You know you're leaving the awkward phase when the weight of your hair controls the flips and curls. This is different for each individual because some people have hair that is more curly. Other signs that your leaving the awkward phase are 1.) when you can keep your bangs behind your ears, and 2.) when you can comfortably keep all your hair in a pony tail holder at the bottom/back of your head.
All of this is subjective, of course. I think you'll get many varied responses.

Hi Dane welcome on the mlhh.
The akward phase is the part of growing your hair out when you can't control it anymore. The hair get's a life of it's own and that's something you've gotta live with when you've got longhair.
It's also the part where the hair is going to annoy you because it get's in your eyes and mouth for example.
Myself I'm just starting to get into the akward phase I'm at 6 months right now.
For me personaly I don't know when the akward phase will stop because I never grown my hair out that far but I think it will be when I can pull of a full ponytail.

Hej!
If you've been growing your hair for nine months, you're probably in the awkward stage already. That happens when it's too long to stay out of your eyes and mouth and it gets in the way whenever you try and do anything and sometimes, you want to rip it out by the roots or shave it all off because it's so annoying. I cut all my hair off three times during the awkward stag the first time I grew it long. On top of all that you feel it doesn't look very good because nothing you did with short hair works well once it gets beyond a certain length and it's not long enough to do any of the styles for long hair, so it just sits there getting in the way and annoying you. That can last anything from six months to a year, depending on your hair type.
Gel and wax can help to keep it under control - or at least out of your face in the early stages, but eventually they won't work quite as well because the hair will be too heavy for them to hold it. However, by the time it gets to that stage, you can usually tie it in a half tail at the back of your head. That's one of the signs that you're getting close to the end of the awkward stage, but you'll still have a few months to go.
There are all sorts of things you can do to stop it getting in your way, the simplest being to wear a hat. Some people use various types of grips and clasps and I've seen some people, like David Beckham, braid it. Try out the different options and see what works best for you. You'll probably feel like cutting it into some sort of style so that it will look better. I'd advise against that, because cutting it really just prolongs the awkard phase, but at the end of the day, it's your hair and your decision.
As I said, some days you'll hate it, but if you persevere, it will be worth it. Long hair is like everything else that's worth having. You've got to go through a bit of a struggle to get there but you'll be glad that you did at the end.
I love the feel of my hair on my back (except when it's cold and wet) and it's great to get compliments on it. It also feels great on a windy day to stand on a hill and let the wind blow through it, even though I know I'll have to spend half an hour taking the tangles out afterwards!
Hejhej!
Hvordan har du det? (Nej, jeg er ikke dansk...amerikansk. ;-))
Here is a link to one of the best explanations of awkward stage hair that you will ever read. See below.
Happy hair growing,

hehe, wow Matt B, du kan da lidt dansk, hva? (you can a bit of dansih, huh? just a translation haha)
I'm very glad for the warm welcome, and all those answers! I must admit, that I have known this page for a while...and it had helped me a lot...Thanks for the answers! I guess, that I would be out of the awkward phase in half a year or less? I can almost get my bangs behind my ears, which I'm looking forward to! I hate when it gets down in front of my eyes...
PS: I will soon post some pics of my hair...
wow thats a good question man. I had two kind of akward stages. The first one was when the front of my hair got too long to do anything with. the second one was when my hair got to about shoulder length and it started flipping up
I have a day job thsts kind of corporate so I was trying to keep the attention off the fact that I was growing my hair long.Because of this I made my first big mistake, I cut the front like bangs so it would look more managable. I think I actually did these trims 3 times. Looking back I only wish that I hadn't because the front part of my hair was always a problem once my hair got really long. As far as the flip part, I don't know if everybodies hair does this, but mine did.I would try to blow dry it and use a round brush and kinda curl the ends under. The good news is eventually if you keep growing your hair, this will stop. The weight of your hair will negate the flip on the ends. My advice is to jusr deal with whatever akward stages come up. You will be rewarded with nice long hair if you stay the course.

I believe awkward is a state of mind, if you let it bother you then it will. When I was in that shorter stage when my hair got in my eyes, I would tell myself "WOW my hair is finally getting long!" I guess what I'm saying is, sit back and relax. Enjoy the journey.
