It is my utmost pleasure, having been the nominator, to announce the newest member of The Luxuriant Flowing Hair Club for Scientists, David N. While not up on the website yet, David and I have received official word that he has been accepted. It took a while, I submitted his nomination way back in the begining of December, after assisting him to find an online source for his published papers (The US run Pub-Med, whowouldathunk?) Please add your congratulations to this thread. And please see the link below for the newest members, and information on membership.

WoHoo!!! Go David!

Hi Mouse,
Thank you for your congratulations! I had almost given up hope of being accepted, since my nomination was about 5 months ago, so I was delighted to find out that I got in after all!
Take care,
David

.
Hi Mike,
Thank you for the congratulations!
Take care,
David
You're one of a very cool group of scientists!
Ed
I'd say you qualify. Your website has everything needed. If you are the shy and humble type, like David, I or someone else can put in a nomination for you. THINK ABOUT IT.
Carol
Thanks Carol for the suggestion. I'm an engineer and would not generally be considered a scientist.
Ed
Engineering not a science? Coulda fooled me! You might want to take a peak. Quite a number of members are engineers.
Carol
I must agree with Ed. I have visited the site and while I work at a science facility and am around scientists all the time, like Ed, I am technically not one because my work does not involve basic research, but rather design. If there are engineers in there, then the boundaries of the club have been blurred and its distinctiveness has changed. Therefore one must ask, "What is its point?" Engineering is in fact, not a science--I would go on with an amplification of this but surely you know this yourself and for others it would be tedious.
Well, what about Military Science, Library Science, and Political Science? My college had all of those. (Methinks the term has been abused....)
Bill
Hi Ed,
Thank you for your kind words, and I think you would most definitely be eligible. In my mind, engineers are definitely scientists!
Take care,
David
Thanks to Carol for her work in getting David recognized for what is is and a hearty congratulations to David for his entry into the esteemed (at least in my eyes) society.
Hip hip hooray!
Hip hip hooray!

Mark
Hi Mark,
Thank you for your very kind words of congratulations! In fact, I don't have to "do anything" over there, since it is not a message board, but it is more a "fun" site highlighting both men and women scientists who have long hair, and I was honoured to be accepted, after Carol very kindly nominated me.
Take care,
David
Congratulations David, what an honour!
Thanks also to Carol for letting us know.
Best regards Dave

Wow, a celebrity in our midst! Dancing rodents! (conga rats...)
Is it a real community, that you'd be able to spread the word about MLHH?
Hi Juli414,
Thank you for your kind words, and there is no way I could ever lay claim to being a celebrity, since I am just a plain old chemist. I was honoured that I was accepted into their group. It is not a message board like the hyperboard, but rather a website highlighting both men and wonen scientists who have long hair.
Thank you again,
David
Congratulations David, how exciting!!! Thanks Carol for sharing the wonderful news.
Bruce
Hi Bruce,
Thank you for your kind words, and I was honoured that they accepted me, after such a long wait. I was touched that Carol nominated me in the first place!

David
Congratulations, DavidN! Knowing that you are a member of the club must make you very proud.
Tracy
Hi Tracy,
Thank you for your kind words, and I was delighted and in fact honoured that they accepted Carol's nomination, since I am just an ordinary chemist who happens to have long hair.
Take care,
David
Wow David. Is this ever great news and I am so happy for you. Congratulations!
And Carol, it was so thoughtful of you to let us all know about this distinct honour. Thanks alot.

Walter
Hi Walter,
Thank you so much for your kind words, and perhaps you might consider joining too, since you are also a scientist with long hair!
Take care,
David
...is there a category for scientist-retired ? Perhaps we can start a site for long-haired gardeners! (I nominate Ken!) or maybe, long-haired afternoon-nap-specialist?? HA!
Hi again, Walter,
Actually, I will be officially on my last day at work in three months, then will be off golfing all summer, before a MOST interesting trip in the fall, but the destination of that trip is a little secret for now! (wink!)
More details later,
David
David, you are just way too humble.
Here is the backround story, for the curious among you.
David always aspired to be a member, but never felt he was good enough. Most of the members have PhD's, but quite a number have Masters, and a few are amateurs. IMHO, he was quite worthy, so I offered to nominate him, and pushed him to provide his credentials. He had titles for the published research papers he co-authored, but no online links to the actual papers. I searched the titles, and one led me to Pub-Med, where I then found the others. They are abstracts, you need a membership to access the full text. Once I had the required information, I submitted the nomination for admittance. This was in early December. As months went by, David expressed his discouragement that he wasn't good enough, and would probably not be accepted. I kept telling him to not give up, as the person-in-charge just may not have gotten to him yet, and I felt he was more than qualified. I just knew he would get in, even if he had doubts.
Here is the text of the nomination. For those of you with Pub-Med memberships (and the ability to comprehend all of that scientific mumbo-jumbo), you can read the papers in full.
I, Carol Lucier, would like to nominate my dear friend, David H North, to The Luxuriant Flowing Hair Club for Scientists. In addition to having luxuriant flowing long hair, David is an analytical chemist for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, working in the Dartmouth Laboratory in Nova Scotia. http://pub.directinfo.agr.gc.ca/cgi-bin/x500_QuickSearch?lang=0&unitdn=OU%3DNSAOK-BSNEK,OU%3DATOPMNB-OAMNB,OU%3DOFVPO-BVPOP,OU%3DCFIA-ACIA,O%3DGC,C%3DCA&searchtype=employee&name=David+North
David wrote to me concerning his education, "As to my education, I received by BSc degree with first class Honours in Chemistry from Dalhousie University (Halifax, NS) in 1975. I received my Masters degree from the same university in 1979. The reason for the 4 year space between degrees is because I finished my research for my thesis in 1977, then started working in 1977. I wrote my thesis after I had already started working full time, so wrote it after hours."
David is co-author of the following scientific papers;
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=pubmed&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=17373466&ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=pubmed&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=8245164&ordinalpos=2&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum

David has given his enthusiastic consent to be nominated, and hopes you will find him worthy of membership. (As do I!) The attached picture shows David at work, surrounded by the millions of dollars worth of equipment he uses. His hair is even more luxuriant and flowing today. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Carol Lucier
Hi Carol,
Thank you so much for providing these links! I admit that when I saw the credentials of the scientists on that website, I did admit to having some doubts, since I am not a true research scientist, but rather an ordinary chemist who happened to be a co-author of a few papers!
Thank you again,
David
Carol, this is so cool that you nominated David for membership in the LFHCFS. You knew he deserved it just as I do.
And David, congratulations. You have accomplished quite a lot, and a little pride isn't always a bad thing. I will try to go and check out some of your papers. I am sure I won't be able to make heads or tails of them as I am a chemistry ignoramus. The only thing I know about chemistry is how to figure out the reason behind the symbols on the periodic chart based on Latin and Greek; here, you know I have to play smart by including some of this. Fe (Iron) from Latin "ferrum," etc. HA! ;-)
Congratulations again!!!
