I've worn my hair just past shoulder length for years, but did not (wasn't allowed to) let it grow out until I was an adult. I have 2 boys who are getting old enough to voice their opinion about their own hairstyles. I'm such a hypocrite! I am very reluctant to let them wear their hair long! Anyone else? Do/would you let your son wear his hair long? If so, how long? What styles? Accessories? How old is old enough? How long is long enough? If you are a hypocrite like me, what is your excuse?
Leslie
I don't have any sons, so I'm not affected by this predicament. However, I can state that at the school my daughters go to, there are a couple of boys with long hair. One has hair that is midback in length. He keeps it short in front and always wears it loose in the back. Perhaps I'll contact the family to see if they'd like him to be pictured here.
As far as your question goes, though. I think that if your son wants to have it long and you don't, you should have a good reason for keeping it short and explain this to him in a clear, direct way. If you don't have a real reason, let him grow it long.
I'm amazed at how this is an issue. here in Sydney, Australia, where I live; people just look how they want to look: shaved head or grown terminally lonmg, doesn't matter. My feeling is, let them do what they want to do. Give them the address of decent hairdressers who can style it it they want it long; show them how to do reasonable things with it if they want it short or shaved. But don't get all upset about it. The worst thing is to let them think hair is an issue. It isn't. The thing inside the head is what matters!!
Okay, lets start we this: My hair is about midback. My son will be three this coming February. His has [short] bangs in the front but the rest have yet to have their first cut [which is comming soon, but only a trim] Currently his hair goes to about midback as well, but only because his back is about 10 inches long. Now my hair may be getting 'the big cut' someday soon but only because its starting to thin. [ the reasons are a person issue of style, so I won't go into it] Anyway, I don't think I'll insist or even bother with cutting my son's hair just because I cut mine. I just have to brace myself for when he starts voicing his ideas of style. (My wife's midwife once said that she was prepared for the long hair, but not the shaved head and earrings!)If you don't like it, then consider you own thoughs as a young man. You might have done it because you weren't allowed to, once you got it out of you system, you cut it with no regrets or worries. [Hmmm, maybe I should tell that one to my father and to put the blame on him for it being long now! <>) In the end, you aren't a hypocrite, you just became your father, we all reach that point sooner or later. (the horror, the horror)
I have 3 boys 2,7,16. All have platnum blond hair, the 2 year old has hair that that lies on the floor when he's standing(3feet long). The 7 year old is 4'9 and his hair is long in the back and it to touches the floor. The 16 year olds hair is only 1 foot below his shuolders. They all like their hair that long and hopefully won't cut it. They all wear their hair loose, I don't think there should age limit or length limit.
you should be commended as parents!!! individuality is important !!!!
as long as the kids are happy....
can we see a family picture????
Dave
Not one that I'm proud to show.
Dave asked the same thing that the webmaster did:
No, we didn't think so. People who stand by their words SIGN them, and in four postings we haven't seen those words backed up once by a real name, email address, or web site URL.
Long hair is nothing to be ashamed of. If you have it, for goodness sake, people see it every time you leave the house! This is not a support group for dudes with a deep dark secret, so people who are cowering must be ashamed of SOMETHING ELSE, not their hair. Like maybe the lack of veracity in what they've posted....
When we see something not believable posted by someone ashamed to reveal their identity, perhaps the best tack would just be to ignore such postings, except for their entertainment value. And in that vein, I still really want to know what kind of fertilizer they spread on the head of the two year old! :-)
you know, first time I saw alt.recovery.tech-support, I thought that
would be the silliest support program I could qualify for (of course,
they're mocking support groups by pointing out that under most
definitions, they receive tons of passive-aggressive manipulation from
their managers alternating with classic verbal emotional abuse from
their customers...) but I think this idea takes the cake - maybe next
a twelve-step program for women who wear tight dresses and makeup?
I'm glad I said it was NOT a support group! Coyotes are shy creatures, and I would not want to scare ours off. He's such a lovable longhaired critter.

I think the reason Hellraiser will not post a picture is because there is no picture, no family, and no long hair. He's just a sick dreamer.
That sounds great! If you have any pictures to share, I'd be very pleased to post them here. If you only have prints, I can scan them and return them to you right away.
So, what about school? Does the 7 year old drag his hair to school?
The 7 year old(James) puts it under his shirt.
Boy, I wish I had this family's genetics! The two year old has hair that grows at least at three times my meager 6 inches a year, and the seven year old's rate of at least 8 inches a year ain't too shabby, either!
As to the two year old, they've gotta be fertilizing it with something, and I wanna know what!
do you have any pics? This is somthing I have to see no one has that much hair!

Nice tale, guy. Next time, how about at true one.
IT'S TRUE!!!!!!!!! Why would you think otherwise?
I think he had a problem with the idea of a two-year-old with
three-foot hair.... that's three times normal hair growth rates.
I'm willing to entertain the possibility (after all, children do most
of their growing in the first two years of life for everything
else...) but will tend to be skeptical without any evidence.

Get a life! If you don't think that my kids have long hair you've got another thing coming!!!

did you even read what I wrote? or were you under the impression that
I am "Oh, please"? or are you unaware of how bizarrely incredible
three feet of hair growing in two years would be?
in case you didn't notice, I think three times normal hair-growth rate
might be possible in the first few years of life, but will not accept
your, or anyone else's, word that such a thing has happened on blind
faith. I concede a lack of knowledge on the subject of your kids'
hair length, and am interested in knowing more. However, your
automatic defensive reaction does little to inspire. Feel free to
follow your own advice to get a life.

All you guys, except Coyote, are crazy. This story is not true, period.
Suppose these boys have read the post by their cousin Frog? Maybe we need a site just devoted to silly longhair stories and the people who believe them.
You are certainly not going to bolster your story with that attitude. How about something more constructive, like a more detailed accounting of the hair length of your youngster.
As far as Coyote Pup's allegation about 3 times normal growth rate, let's take another gander. You stated 2 years old. Can you be more specific? At 2, months make a big difference. He could be anywhere from 2.0 to nearly 3. Let's suppose on the outside that he is nearly 3 and take 3 just for round numbers. Now what we really have is something short of 3 years 9 months. I'm not sure at what point during gestation hair growth begins, but I've seen plenty of newborns with 2 or 3 inches of hair to know hair growth does not begin at birth. How do you figure 3 feet? If it's the normal top of the head to bottom of the hair, the longest hair is probably more like 2 1/2 feet long. So now we have 2 1/2 feet of hair in just over 3 years, which is a slower growth rate than Crystal Gayle claims.
I know this excercise in logic is stretching things a bit, but it at least demonstrates that the original claim is within the realm of possibility.
P.S. I thought that was "think".
In the interest of fact, I'm afraid that I have to side with "Oh,please" and Coyote Pup. Why? Because I am the Father of a two year [and ten months] old boy whose hair has not been cut since birth [except for the bangs]! Babies lose their 'newborn hair' and start their 'post-birth' hairafter a few months, hence all the bald babies. My son apparently had an overlap in these two cycles and only had a small bald spot on the side of his head for a short time. Now, his hair [at its longest point] is getting close to his waist, but it usually has to be wet to see this. Due to the relative size of head to bodyhair cloer to the top of his head and his face are the 'shorter' one. So when we tie it back in a ponytail, there are some locks that easily get free, if they can be held at all. Hair growth rate is about 6-8 inches a year, regardless of the age of the person. Three feet is extraordinarily fast, and worthy of note, so why not any news coverage, local or otherwise? If this goes on then a third party could easily confirm fact. The human body *IS* capable of amazing thing, but I think that the majority of people here are from Missouri

hmmm.... in case no-one (especially including hellraiser) noticed,
I have not stated the opinion that hellraiser is lying. What I have
stated is that I am willing to consider such a possibility, as ours
is an incredible world where nature does not have laws so much as
tendencies, but due to the ease of deception on the internet and a
basic level of skepticism, I don't accept anyone's statements at face
value, but ask for some verification. Bill and "Oh, please" are the
only people to have stated an active disbelief.
oh, and I pride myself on a certain level of craze.

Sorry if I lost track of who say what, I'll be more careful in the future. As for the 'Missouri' comment, it come from Missouri being the "show me" state. Its a good uphemism for, "I'm skeptical about what you tell me until I see it." I apologize if I seemed a bit cryptic there.

ah, makes more sense... even knowing that Missouri is the "show me"

Leslie,
I wore my hair in a should-length style for years, and I have two sons. I made sure that both of them had crewcuts when they were very young. Why? The first one (who initially had long hair like dad) was always confused as a girl by virtually everyone who saw him. I was very concerned about the impact of that on his developing identity. Not that it would confuse him with regard to his sexual identity, but that it was humiliating. By the way, both boys preferred the crewcuts, frankly. The older one now has his hair a little longer and the younger one still gets a crewcut every summer. Their choice now. I felt like when they were younger, I needed to make the choice.
Like you said, my boys are getting old enough to voice there opinions, But unlike you I still have long hair so I'm not a hypocrite. My boys are 8,12,15 the 8 year old(Jimmy) only has sholder length hair, the 12 yr.old(Shaun)'s hair is just long enough to tuck behind his ears. It's the 15 yr.old(Jamie) that has the nicest hair, his hair is about butt length, because he's been growing it since he was 4 and he has no intention of cutting it. All of my boys wear there hair loose but when my eldest works on cars at his school he puts it under his shirt or in a ponytail. I wish I could say the same for Jimmy, he doesn't like his hair because the kids make fun of him. I'm still praying that Shaun doesn't cut his hair so he will turn out like his older brother. From what he tells me alot of his classmates have long hair. I was also wondering if anyone could tell me there's a name for a shade of blond that's not quite blond but not quite white? Also what should I do to discourage Jimmy form cutting his long beautiful hair just because kids make fun of him.
unfortunately, the name for it is straw-blond.... hair colourings
call it 'very light blond' because they realise that straw just isn't
the greatest name....
well, as someone who was tormented mercilessly for having bright red
hair my whole childhood, I recommend large amounts of misanthropy and
anti-social behaviour. errr... or not....
