I have this little annoying problem (never learned from my mistakes the first time I let my hair grow out) where I've shaved the sideburns down to a few millimeters all the way to the top of the ear instead of where the actual scalp hair ends... And now I've shaved off the rest of the sideburns completely ('cause they look to thin anyways), which means I have a resulting half inch of hair which probably should have been grown with the rest of the hair but is shaved short.
I can't really decide if I want to go through with the hassle of letting that hair grow out too (it's about 2 years behind in growth...), if I should just leave these small sections of short hair by my ears or if I should close-shave all the way up to where the long hair begins (right at the top of the ear).
So how high do you all trim your sideburns? Any preferences, tips, suggestions are appreciated!
That little tuff you have there I consider as part of my hair and I let it grow along with the rest of it.
I keep the length of the hairs constituting my sideburns trimmed to the same length as I do those of a beard (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch). As for the "height" of my sideburns (that is, how far down my cheeks I let them extend, when I'm not wearing a beard), I maintain the bottom of them anywhere between the middle and bottom of my ears. Of course, everyone's different, but I find this looks best on me.

Lately I have been doing mine almost like that picture. Then I shave the area beyween the sideburn and where my goatee starts. I like to have a full Goat, so I grow it a ways up my jawbone and shave between there and the little sideburn I leave

I have the same problem. When I started growing my hair I incorrectly decided to make my sideburns start at the top tip of my ear. Now I have short hairs trying to grow to meet the rest of my hair. They look really funny if I don't spray them down.
I've decided to make the sideburn start at the top cleft (where my ear comes from my head) of my ear and extend to the little bump in the middle front of my ear. I keep the hair length at about 1/4 inch.
Those are the specs I go by.

I had long sideburns long before I started growing my hair, so I have minor problems with that!
However, I keep those tuft of hair you mentioned at a length of 2 inches, so that it blends with the beard but makes a funny effect (which I like) when I wear a tight ponytail: a kind of that in the pic.
If by side burns, you mean the non facial hair kind, everybody gets, then i would let them grow.
It might be annoying for the first few months, but you can took them behind your ears after around 5-6 months, so all is well.
I leave it myself, it kinda tickles when they brush against your collar
I usually trim to about where those tufts you have start. I would recommend just letting them grow out and tuck them behind your ears until they are as long as all the rest of your hair. It's not a big hassle and you will hardly notice them when they tuck behind your ear. I've had as similar problem deciding what to do with side burns. It's good to see I'm not the only one struggling with what exactly to do with them.
I shave them right up to the top of my ears, makes hair much easier to tie back/put hair behind ears.
I started out by shaving them completely off, down to where the longer hairs grow. After that, I let my sideburns grow back in so they're more distinguished from the long hairs (and therefore easier to maintain).

I started out by having them down to my ear lobe. However after much thought I shaved them off completely right to the highest part of my ears about three weeks ago.
Looks much better both with pony tail and hair down.
Those hairs in your picture running towards you ear are best shaved leaving the strong mass just above as the start of your hair are best shaved.
I normally shave as carefully as time allows in the week and at the weekend I shave them high very carefully.
At my tits.

count me as one of the ones who doesn't have any sideburns. I just like it better this way.
My beard growth isn't very strong yet, only the part revered as a goatee is better. I guess I'll need some more years before I can grow a real beard or even think about some good looking side burns.
