Hello everyone,
My name is Joshua and this is my first post to this board. I've actually been lurking since last December, but I decided it was finally time to post. I was partly waiting because I wasn't sure if I wanted to grow my hair out or not. But I've finally taken the plunge and committed to growing my hair to shoulder length.
Now on to my hair history: I've had relatively short hair pretty much all of my life. My parents kept my hair short when I was younger and I continued that way without giving it much thought. This pic gives a pretty good idea of how my hair has been traditionally cut (it was taken late 2005):
It was only back in 2006 when I began experimenting with longer hairstyles. This pic is roughly how I wore my hair from early '06 to late last year:
As 2007 progressed, I went longer and longer between haircuts and I was enjoying the length more and more. I was also liking how I looked with longer hair. Then in December of last year I found this site while searching the internet for long hairstyles for men. It piqued my interest and got me thinking about "going for broke" and growing it right out. Sometime in October was my last haircut and this is what it looked like in December:
And here's my hair now:
And finally, the proverbial "bedroom shot" showing my posters of my favorite Lord of the Rings character:
So, I guess that's all for now. Thanks for stopping by! I'm looking forward to being (more) involved in the community, and I'll be sure to post regular updates. Oh, and feel free to ask any questions you may have, and I'll do my best to answer.

I must say, you look much better with long hair, and it's quite nice. ^_^ Shiny. I say the longer the better.
...however, and this may be out of line but I don't care anymore, you might want to find a pair of tweezers. That might be mean, but you'd look better if you tweeze or waxed your eyebrows a bit. Sorry if it's offensive and off the point, but whatever, I've said it.
Hahaha, don't worry about it. I appreciate your honesty. Thanks for the compliments and advice.

Welcome
You certainly do look MUCH better with long hair - far more mature and you are making good progress.
There will be the odd difficult days and doubtless someone will decide to lecture you on short hair: Hang on in - the result really will be worth it.
Thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately I've already had a few comments about having long hair. *sigh* But, it's all part of the journey. And your guys' comments really help my confidence, so thanks again!

Welcome to the board, Joshua! You are definitely looking much better with longer hair (though you would probably expect to hear that, as we are a bit biased ;), and it's nice to have you as an addition to the community. Stay well and keep it growing! =)
-James
Biased or no, the compliments are great either way. lol.
Great to be here, and I will!
Thanks,
Joshua
Welcome! You've got a great head of wavy hair that will just keep looking better and better.
Keep it growing!
Mouse
Thank you very much, Mouse! Having wavy hair is a pain while here in the awkward stage, but I just have to keep reminding myself that it'll be better when it's longer.

Hi Josh
That was a good intro and welcome to MLHH.
Kevin
Thanks, Kevin. I was hoping it wasn't too long or had too many pics. I was trying to balance information with long-windedness. lol.

Your hair has come a long ways it looks like. I too like your hair longer rather than shorter, as most do here. Keep up your growth and I'm looking forward to your updates!
Indeed it has. This is the longest I've ever had it in my entire life. It's been an experience.
Yeah, that seems to be the recurring theme. :-D Like I said in my intro though, I too like how I look with long hair and I can't wait to see how it looks longer.
I will, and thanks!

Hi Joshua what a fantastic outline of yourself and how you decided to try long hair and most important stumbling onto this great board. This hands down is the best mens longhair site on the net as its the only place I consult.Certainly as time goes by your will find the resources here very helpful.Just surf the site to see the information available.Other than that just sit back and enjoy the ride and do post updates as your hair gets longer.Welcome, as I should have said it earlier, and I picked this pic as my favorite.Take care
Mark
Thanks so much for your kind words, encouragement, and compliments. Like you said, this is the best place on the 'net for longhairs, as I found out in my three months of lurking. It's good to become a part of the great camaraderie here.
Joshua
Hi Joshua and welcome to the Hyperboard. Your 1st posting was terrific along with such a well written introduction. Didn't have to flip a coin for this opinion, but the longer hair suites you greatly. Best of luck to you in growing out your hair.
Again, welcome!
Justin~
Thanks so much for your warm welcome, Justin! I tried my best to provide a good amount of information while keeping the post to a reasonable length. Must be all the years of writing college papers. :-D
Great to be here.
Joshua
Greetings Joshua and welcome to the journey! You will find a great community here with all the help and inspiration you need. You have a great head of hair and are well on your way man! Long hair really suits you. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Max! Great to be here.
Joshua
Looking good. Welcome to the board.
Thanks Garth!
Joshua
At your current hair length most guys would be experiencing some of the most horrible effects
of the Awkward Phase #1...
...but your hair seems to be quite tame. Is this the case or did you have to
work hard to get it to look like this?
A reminder: As always, if at some point you find that your
long hair is interfering with job choices, romantic involvements, etc. You
may have to consider your options.
BUT, after you have reached YOUR long hair goal and you find yourself in a state of UNhappiness,
then please remember this:
There is NOTHING wrong with deciding that being a longhair is not for you. And after
waiting for the commonly accepted waiting period of two weeks,
if you still want to cut your hair, then go for it.
ALWAYS be true to yourself--and that goes for EVERYTHING else in your life.
Good Luck!
Actually, I am really quite surprised at how cooperative my hair is being. After lightly towel drying my hair, I comb through it and slick it back with a wide tooth comb. I make my part, and let it dry and fall forward naturally. As you can see, this works pretty well. Of course there are days when there's a flip here or a curl there that simply refuses to cooperate, but they're rare, for which I'm rather glad.
I appreciate your honesty here. Not many people would say what you have, and I admire your candor. It's great not feeling like I have to keep growing my hair if I absolutely hate it.
Thanks for you advice and kind complements!
Joshua
Hi Joshua,
First of all, I would like to welcome you to the hyperboard, and am delighted that you have joined our community. You have excellent quality hair, and you are coming along very well indeed in your journey to long hair. Hang in there, and I can assure you that the rewards are well worth it.
Also, I would like to congratulate you on your graduation last year!
Welcome aboard!
David
Thanks, DavidN! Great to be here.
Thank you very much; I'm very happy to know you think my hair is of good quality.
Indeed I shall, and with your guys' support, I know it'll be much easier!
Thank you kindly, sir! Much appreciated.
Joshua
Joshua,
As many have said, I totally agree, you look much better with longer hair, and your color/ texture looks like it will be even greater as it gets longer! From the looks of it you're right around the same stage as me, and actually you have a similar hair type, and color to myself; I love it more everyday, so I'm thinking it's very similar experience for you.
Keep it up and bonne chance!
-Austin
Hey, I keep hearing that a lot. I hope it doesn't mean I looked bad with short hair. :-P lol. Just kidding. I too like how I look with longer hair, and it get better every day. I have similar texture hair to my mom, and similar color to my dad (before the grays, lol). So mom's first-hand haircare advice helps me a lot.
Yes, looking back at your post, it does look similar. And yeah, I'm loving it more everyday, finding that I can't wait until it's longer!
Thanks much, Austin!
Joshua
Welcome to the hyperboard!
You've already got some lenght, Were about as far in the growing out journey. The hardest part is about to come I heard.
Long hair looks better on you than short hair imho.
Thanks! Glad to be a part of the community.
Yikes; I hope not! lol. This has been bad enough. My bangs are just too short to tuck behind my ears, so they're always getting in my way all the time. I'll be much happier when I can pull it all back to work on things.
Suggestion to the webmaster: Perhaps some sound-dampening insulation would be a good addition to the website; there seems to be an echo in here. lol, kidding. Great to know you all think I look good with long hair. I honestly was worried I wouldn't look as good with longer hair, but you guys have unquestionably put the final nails in that coffin.
Thanks for your welcome and compliments, Vincent.
Joshua
Welcome aboard, Joshua! You've got a great head of hair that seems to grow rather quickly. My opinion of your pictures: the longer your hair gets, the better it suits you.
--Val
Thank 'ee much, Validus! After measuring the growth the last couple of months, I've found out that it grows at just under a half-inch a month, which seems to be the normal rate from what I gather.
Thanks for your warm welcome and great compliments.
Joshua
You have a good start and some fine lookin hair!
Frank
Thank you, Frank.
Joshua
I've finally taken the plunge and committed to growing my hair to shoulder length.

Great Pictures J! It feels good right. Your parents made you keep your hair relitivily short but somewhere in there was a "LongHair". Now that you are a little older and can do your own thing, embrace it to the fullest! Join the Club! Grow it down to your Buttox!!
Cheers,
Todd B.
Thanks! Yes it does. Feels great. :-D
My parents didn't really "make" me keep my hair short, that's just the way my mom cut it, and I really didn't give it a thought either way. I'm actually still living with my folks, and they don't mind me growing my hair out. Mom's actually kind of excited, thinking I'll end up looking like Aragorn from the Lord of the Rings, which I thought was pretty funny, lol. As far as length goes, I really have no intentions of growing it beyond my shoulders. Anything longer would be too long for me personally, though I wouldn't stop anyone else from doing it of course.
Thanks again, Todd.
Joshua
I really have no intentions of growing it beyond my shoulders.
Your Welcome Joshua,
I hear you about the shoulder length thing. It is going to look very nice on you.
Me, I'm just one of those Grow Grow Grow guys, and that usually colors my advice on the board. I do however realize that there are different strokes for different folks, Different streets for different feets if you will............lol
Have fun getting to your shoulder length goal
Todd B.
Welcome Joshua;
You make an impressive introduction and longer hair certainly suits you.
When I was young (long before you were born) I used to spend time at Silver Creek (about 50 miles from you?). There was not much there then.....doesn't look like there is too much there now. HA!
I will look forward to your updates.
Thanks for Sharing
WWT (Walter White Tail)
Thanks for your compliments, White Tail. Silver Creek is actually about 75 miles from me (according to google, lol). I've never been there, so I can't comment either way. But I can tell you that not much is going on in WNY period. The economy here stinks and people are leaving in droves. Very unfortunate really, because it is a beautiful area and I love being here.
Thanks again,
Joshua
Thanks Jonathan. Glad I could share them with the board.
Joshua
Great to have you join us, Jmustang! Certainly my favourite character, too, though my hair is certainly more hobbit-esque.
Cheers!
Shawn (Mr.Crow)
You've got a head of hair that would make a hobbit jealous! :-D
Thanks for the welcome.
Joshua
Interesting web page you have. I live in scotland, and kiltmaking seems to be "dying out" where i live in the highlands.
Great hair progress btw.
Also did you know its rumoured that us scots are ancestral descendants of the Eygyptians? Very strange, but apparently true.
