I have decided to grow my hair out. I know you probably get a lot of these threads but I feel the need to share it. When I was a kid i used to have hair down to my chin my mom liked it and my dad let me keep it when he got custody of me and my brother. But we were young and my brother and his friends started playing neighborhood barber and would cut peoples hair from around the neighborhood.
Well my brother said he wanted to cut like an inch off my hair to make it look better and when he did he cut 6 inches off!! He thought it was funny and it pissed my dad off and since then iv had it buzz cut or crew cut style for like 12 years. Well on December 30th 2007 me and my friend shaved our heads and said we wont even think of cutting it until December 30th 2008. Well its about an inch and a half to 2 inches now and my hair is starting to grow bangs. I take good care of it i wash it 2 to 3 times a week and comb it with a wide toothed comb a few times a day and dont yank to knots out in the morning when im trying to get rid of the bed head.
But heres the problem. The hair above my ears annoy me im always brushing them back behind my ears and they tickle my ears. Plus people are starting to comment on my hair saying i need a hair cut and that growing it wont look good on me. I dont use gel anymore and my hair is naturally straight but my friends still think i should just buzz cut it and spike it up like i have normally done for years. But i just keep fighting them off. I play guitar and people also think that im trying to pretend to be a rockstar cause i play guitar all the time and listen to skid row, the doors, guns n roses and many other good rock bands and the comments get annoying sometimes. Anyways what do you guys do in situations like this? and whats your advice for someone really wanting to keep his one year goal?
My advice is just ignore everyone who says something negative about your hair length. Once you get past the 1 year mark, you'll notice not very many people will say negative stuff to you as much, until they all just accept that you arnt going to cut it. Also, the longer you grow youre hair the harder it is to cut it in my opinion, so if you just stick with it for the full year you're in the clear haha
Honestly, I know the society around you seems negative and very unsupportive, as that is what I'm experiencing, but if you keep fighting them off and showing that youre strong and won't let them rule your life, then basically you'll win in the long run. Don't listen to them if they say growing it out won't suit you; they don't even know that as a fact because they've never seen you with long hair and can't imagine what its like, and they don't want you to go against the current society norms which makes guys have ugly short hair.
Seriously, I can advise you on a few comebacks which I use :P :
"I'm into natural. Scissors aren't natural"
"I want to grow my hair long. GET OVER IT."
"la la la laaa i can't hear you"
"aha yes now i'll go cut it" rolling your eyes at the same time
"long? this is long?" *start laughing*
"I'm not you, I don't conform"
"Why. [because it looks better short] I don't agree. [trust me i know] Prove it"
"I WILL find a job thanks."
"Try convince me all you want.. you'll really never manage."
"I'm not bothered about your opinion"
"la la la laaaa i can't hear you"
... etc..
;)

In addition to the other suggestions just tell them to take a flying leap.
I am curious what is special about Dec 30 2008?

Dec 30th 2008 marks the one year marker if I like what I see then maybe I will continue. Anyways guys thanks for your support I feel welcome here. I will keep you all updated on my progress hopefully I wont give into society norms and keep it growing!

Welcome to the journey!!! Be free!!!
I don't need to add to the suggestions on dealing with the negative feedback as they pretty much cover that area.. Dealing with the "in between" stage pretty much sucks, BUT it will pass!! I hated that time where my hair was too long to do much with yet too short to pull back in a tail... Stick it out and hang in there.. time will do all the work, just grin and bear it! I hope your reach your goal!! Good luck!

I used to comb the hair above my ears behind them, now it's long to completly hide my ears so I have that new style now.
The hair cut comment you'll get from time to time, just say that you're doing what you want and they can't change that!
Eventualy they will stop asking (though new people will say to get a hair cut)
Just be yourself and do what you like, it's your life!
