I grew out an undercut (extremely damaged from drying and relaxing with perm and putting many chemicals in it) and it almost goes to the tip of my nose when the hair is pulled down. About two months ago I decided to not go for the undercut and just go for full long hair, so since then I have been letting it all grow out. But I didn't cut what I already have on top (although I plan to, but I 'm waiting for the rest to get a bit longer then I'll even it out) Some people told me that I should have started over from a shaved head, is this true?? The "long" hair I have now is extremely damaged, but the newer hair growing out seems ok (although dry) I just didn't want to start over completely b/c I think I just couldn't stand to be a complete shorthair anymore. But did i do the right thing by not shaving my head? or will the top hair that was damaged somehow still grow out damaged?
The new hair on top will be healthy, the damaged part will remain as it is. Think of a tree that has lots of healthy leaves on the lower portion but the top is dead and scraggly.
It won't make any difference whether you cut all of the damaged part off or not. All the new hair will grow out nicely and eventually all the damaged hair you'll be able to cut off. The damaged hair might not be fun, but you would you rather have some temporarily damaged hair or none at all?
Of course, if you have split ends, you'll want to make sure all of those are cut.
