Hi all,
I usually wash my hair (shampoo) every other day. I know that everyone is different but I was looking for some opinions on the in-between days. For those who wash their hair less than daily, do you:
A) condition every day you do not shampoo.
B) rinse with water while bathing every day you do not shampoo.
C) wear a shower cap (lololol) or simply do not get hair wet on non-shampoo days.
I would be happy to see some opinions and/or recommendations on this matter as I'm not sure which is better overall. For the record, I have been conditioning every day in between washes for the past few weeks but I feel it may be possibly adding buildup because if I lose a hair I notice there's white above the bulb end.
Thanks and I appreciate any feedback, as always!
-Phil
On the in between days I just now let it get wet, It's not very long yet so that's easy right now.
Thank you Vincent,
Being that mine's a little more than shoulder length, getting it wet will offically become a pain in the @ss from here on in lol. When mine was shorter I used to just let it get wet and your absolutely right, no problems at all. Thanks a lot for your input man.
-Phil
I like to get my hair wet everyday and I usually condition it everyday. I only shampoo it when necessary (1 or 2 "In between days").
I also usually find that when I condition it on the "In between day(s)" it feels and looks a lot better than washing it with shampoo and then conditioner.
Thanks for your input Dan,
I'm gonna see how leaving it dry in between goes, simply to see if not conditioning it in between washes will cause less buildup.
-Phil
On in-between days I simply don't get it wet. If it feels like it needs more moisture, I use a leave-in conditioner.
Mouse
Thanks Mouse, I'm going to do just that: keep it dry in between and add leave-in conditioner if necessary.

This is a good post. It's interesting to know how people care for their hair. I believe this is one of the more important aspects of this board.
Personally I don't like to shampoo everyday because shampoos can be harsh on your hair. I do actually use a shower cap on days I dont want to get my hair wet or need to just run out the door after a shower. I found a good leave in conditioner I use between shampoos and it really seems to help to keep my hair (especially the ends) form getting dry
Thanks a lot Todd,
I'm going to try your exact regmine: shampoo/condition every other day & capp between. My sister actually got me a killer leave-in by nexxus that I rarely use so I'll give it a shot. Also, I remember a while back in a different thread you mentioned Nioxin shampoo...how was it? I'm a little thin in the front area (just started Propecia, already noticing less loss in the shower). My friend also said it's good to clean out your scalp of buildup. Any luck?

Hi Phil, You know I stuck with the Nioxin because I started using it when I noticed the thin area and my hair never got any worse, after using their conditioner and shampoo. Now I don't know if thats just a coinkydink and that was all the thiness I was going to get, or it was the Nioxin.

Haha I hear you, I think i might give it a shot, another friend recommended it to me as it will most likely not hurt and only help.
Thanks Todd,

Sometimes it's 2 weeks with out seeing a soul. Therefore I don't use shampoo very much. Condition only, shampoo when I am going to town or having people over. And of course if it gets really nasty. I also use a boar hair brush to help keep it cleaner from particles and move the oil down to the tips.
Thanks Quester,
I'm definatly gonna try to boar-brush it in between to clean out the particles & transport the oils on my scalp. That seems to be a good method of distributing moisture to the dry ends.

I wash and condition every other day.. In between I will put it in a bun so it doesn't get too wet. I never noticed conditioning in between to make a difference, but that's me ;-)
Tom
Thanks for your input Tom! I'm going to try that as I believe that conditioning in between will just waste time & money haha. You're right though, the only difference I notice from conditioning in between is that I have to re-style my hair from getting wet, thus consuming 5 more minutes that could be put towards 5 extra minutes of sleep in the morning!

Hi Phil,
A quick answer here...
For me, it varies; but, I try not to shampoo more than twice a week. For example:
Day #1 - I might just brush my hair (stimulating the scalp in order to have the natural oils move down towards the ends, where it needs it most). On those days, when I take a shower, I just put my hair in a bun up high enough so my mane won't get wet.
Day #2 - Water-wash only, --- or, maybe a condditioner- only washing.
Day #3 - If needed (if my hair feels too grimy and/or greasy), this will be my thoroughly shampooing day (followed by conditioning, of course), --- or, in some cases, I'll do only a light shampooing... it all depends on many factors.
Hope this answer helps!

Thanks a lot Ken! I'm going to try something similar to your regimin only 3 shampoos per week (only becasue I go to the gym 3 times/week and its NECESSARY to shampoo those days, believe me! lol)
-Phil
Thank you all for your thoughtful input. From what I gathered, the majority of everyone use a shower cap or bun and don't get it wet on in-between days. I also noted that a lot of you boar-brush it to get any unwanted materials out of the hair and to evenly oil it. I think i'm going to try that routine: Dry in between, boar brush & a leave-in conditioner if needed (as many of you noted).
Thanks again everyone, I'll post in a week or so and let you all know how this is working for me.
-Phil
Hi Phil,
For me personally, I wash my hair about 1 - 2 times per week only. If I wash more than that my hair becomes too dry on the ends and the fly-aways are horrible. I do however water wash and condition daily. This has worked for me so far and I'm almost to 20 months now..
Hope this helps..
Peace,
Tristan
Thanks Tristan,
I've been doing the same, aside from more frequent shampooing because my hair gets greasy/oily quickly & I feel I have to after going to the gym. I'm going to stop conditioning in between for a few weeks to see if buildup lessens.

A long period of not washing my hair came to an end some months ago, though I still only shampoo once a fortnight.
The feel of washed hair is very light, but it seems too vulnerable to me. I haven't cut my hair for over two and a half years, but it's only now that I've started to notice split ends.
The oils take a few days to work their way through, then the hair feels stronger and I'm happier.
The trouble I had was a rash that developed where the hair lies on my neck. It was easy for the pharmacy to treat and disappeared soon enough, but did made me cautious about my 'experimenting'.
I wear a woollen hat much of the time (I prefer the hat to hold my hair in, rather than a hair tie) which is more temperate than you might think - even in summer it doesn't feel so hot. I keep this on even in the shower, so I can wash my neck; the hat may get a little damp, but wool dries quickly enough. I think it is a very sympathetic material for hair - you'd think it would reek as I've never washed it, but this is not the case - just a sweet, woollen aroma.
I work in a kitchen and am able to tuck all my hair under a baseball cap, even though it now reaches past my shoulder blades.
cheers!
Mark (:
Thanks for the input Mark,
You seem to have you're own way of managing your hair which is great. There's no way my hair would hold up for that long without a wash though, as it gets oily/greasy quickly.
-Phil
Hi !
I wash once a week. During the week, nothing ! I just brush it one or two days in the week (Usually I comb). And to avoid my hair to become wet, I wear a bun when in the shower.
Vivien
Hey Vivian,
Yea most people seem to like the idea of keeping their hair dry in between washes. I feel the need to shampoo 3x a week (2 with PM teatree or Garnia Fructice Length/strength, then 1 with Nizoral) I'm definatly gonna give dry-between days a shot. Thanks for your feedback man!
-Phil
Hi Phil,
I will share some of my hair washing routine. I shampoo twice a week, always conditioning afterwards, and use two different types of shampoos. One is a regular shampoo, and the other is a claifying shampoo, since I have found that conditioners with cones work best for my hair. If one uses a conditioner with cones, it is necessary to claify, to remove buildup from the cones.
On non shampoo days, I have 2 days a week where I "do nothing", and on the other 3 days, I have "conditioner only" washes. I also use a small amount of a leave in conditioner when my hair is still damp.
Hope this helps,
David
Hey David,
Your routine is close to mine in the sense that you shampoo a few days of the week (i do 3) and sometimes condition in between and sometimes go dry. Being that I shampoo 3x/week, I've decided to go dry on the in between days, possibly adding a leave-in conditioner if necessary as some others posted. As of now I'm using Paul Mitchell Teatree sham/cond twice a week and Nizoral every 3rd time (I started Propecia 2 weeks ago, hence the Nizoral). I find it interesting that you specifically noted "Clarifying" products. I am not familiar with what clarifying products do, though I probably have some. Can you give me an idea of how they help/what they do?
Thanks a lot for your feedback, David.

Hi Phil,
I know by now you received quite a few suggestions so mine won't be too earth shattering but I'm basically of the "C" group.
Since my hair gets quite dried out from shampooing I just do it every other day followed by conditioner. On the days I don't shampoo I just prevent my hair from getting wet since I do shower daily.I find that by day two the hair closest to my head is oily and flat whereas the length still looks OK.I only use the smallest dab of shampoo applied right at the top of my head and rinse it right out.I then follow with a generous amount of conditioner which I rinse out too.If I have trouble getting a comb through afterwards then I break out the leave in conditioner but some days I don't need it.So there you have it nothing too exciting but it works for me.Take care and good luck caring for your hair.
Mark
Thanks for your suggestions Mark,
I am going to try not to get it wet in between shampooing, but that's a good point that I also find with my hair. Point being that your scalp gets oily but the length seems fine after a day or 2. Next time I might try just shampooing the top and rinsing quickly rather than a full wash if the ends feel ok. Judging by your photo your hair is actually quite similar to mine (though mine's no longer your length, but I'm working @ growing it back!). But yea, I'm probably going to try that, seeing that the length may not always ned to be shampoo'd.
Thanks Mark,
-Phil
No.
No.
Don't get hair wet, but some usually gets a little wet anyway.
I found Shampoo and Conditioner necessary when my hair was shorter every day. As it became longer, every other day. And now it is only about once a week (unless I get into a little too much sand in my "Sandbox") along the way in which case it would get the full shampoo and conditioner routine as always. LOL
The above photo was taken of my now "average length" when the hair was still a bit damp.
HAHAHAAHA, that's hilarious Justin(sandbox),
I must say that your hair is identitcal to mine (in texture/color..ect) But I recently cut mine shortish(chin length in layers) from midback and have been trying to gow it back since, possibly your length if nature allows me. I'm going to leave it dry in between as mostly everyone suggested it. I appreciate your input and sense of humor haha; Your hair looks great by the way, hopefully I'll catch up!
