All througout history, even American history mean have worn their hair to at least shoulder length.
Long hair is still the norm outside of the western world. Now you have some people from the East who are trying to copy the west. I live in a chinese Expat neighborhood in Flushing Queens, and longer hair is more frequent in this area than any other area in the city except for the Lower East side in Manhattan where all the rock clubs were, on a sad note, most of them are being replaced by corporate entities.
There have really only been 3 civlizations that have expected short hair in their society.
Roman Empire with their army.
Most of the muslim world ancient and modern, but not what we think of as short.
And then there is Modern America and to some extent Europe.
Yeah!!! I'm normal.
I don't think that's true. I once went with my arab friend to Qatar and the U.A.E and A LOT of the guys there had long hair. I don't think I've seen much adults with long hair though.
I read somewhere when Islam first started, one way to prove you were a muslim was with short hair.
I'm not really sure, but didn't their prophet have long hair? I think it's okay for a guy to have hair, but so long as it doesn't go beyond his shoulders. I do believe I've read that somewhere but I can't remember. <_<
High!
Orthodox mainstream Islamic teachings procribe short hair for men (or, at least, "not imitating the infidels' hair styles" - which de facto is, given the ignorance of many contemporary Muslims about their cultural history, an interdiction of long hair, as long hair in their narrow view is regarded as "Western decadence") - but among the more mystically oriented, e. g. sufis, long hair (even reaching far beyond the shoulders!) was quite common throughout the centuries and still is, especially in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India!
See you in Khyberspace!

When Islam started it didnt had anything with long hair men, but by time the islamic world adapted the western style of short hair cuts which as they said only femles should grow their hair long, even the prophets and the holy men had long hair in past.
even the prophets and the holy men had long hair in past.
And we still do!!! :-)
Even most soldiers had long hair in the past, and it was the
norm. Nearly all ancient warriors had long hair and beards too.
Native Americans, Greeks, Huns, and Vikings were just a few of
many warrior cultures that had long hair.
I sure hope we see a big turn around in our own culture back
to long hair being the norm. It would be nice.

Maybe it's because I'm at college, so I'm constantly surrounded by my contemporaries, but of late I have been very conscious of the number of guys with long hair, at times very long hair, and the number, at least from my perception, seems vcry high. I work at the campus library, and a few days ago I walked around and noticed, of the 10 or so guys in my area, 6 or 7 of them had at least shoulder length hair. I seriously have no idea if that actually means anything, and it certainly was just a convenience sample, but it seems to me to be telling of something, and I can't really see it just being some type of fashion trend; letting your hair grow takes far too long to just be done on a whim, so maybe it's indicative of a growing popularity of long hair, or maybe college students are so broke they don't get haircuts... for years (Ok, not really)
Thoughts anyone?

Long hair amongst young males is on the rise for sure. It has become much more popular. Long hair costs much less to maintain than short hair. Haircuts are costly and those with short hair fork over about $15 for each haircut. Most do this 10 to 15 times per year to maintain it. It costs me far less to just keep it long. I spend maybe $20 per year for shampoo, conditioner, and hair ties. Most people with short hair spend at least $200 per year just for haircuts. I have saved thousands in the past 15 years by just keeping it long.
