Hi everyone! It is now time for another update, from the "Dad" of the hyperboard. It has been approximately 4 years since my last cut, but I experienced about a nine month period of close to nil growth after falling victim to nearly daily straightening, from early 2005, until September 2006, which caused lots of damage, so I would normally have longer hair if not for taht episode. When I joined the hyperboard at that time, I had thought I had reached terminal length, and had photos that indicated almost no growth between Dec. 2005 and September-October 2006. Since I stopped straightening it in September 2006, my hair DOES seem to be growing better again, but not that quickly.
I really have SO much to be thankful for since I discovered the hyperboard, and words cannot begin to say how much I sppreciate the support everyone has shown me.
I took a few photos yesterday, and my hair is a bit straighter than normal, as it usually is after washing and conditioning. My hair is curlier, and also looks thicker, in more humid conditions. I have also included one photo from a year ago, to indicate my growth during the past year, which isn't huge, but it DOES seem longer. I am not sure if my goal of waist to belt length hair is unrealistic, but there is no harm trying. My hair is not that thick at the age of 54, going on 55! I would love to have thicker ends, like Jason's! I have been thinking of a small trim at some point in the future, to see if I could even up the ends, but the tricky thing is finding someone to do it without taking off more than I wish. Another possibility is a self trim, using the Feye's technique.
Now, it is time for the pictures! Here is the typical front photo, and I needed to stand a bit further away to get the full length in, which is a good sign!
Here is a photo of the back/side. I wish the ends were thicker!
Here is a closeup photo of the side.
Here is a ponytail photo.
Finally, here is a photo taken one year ago, which can be compared to the second photo to get an idea of my growth in one year, which is a bit slower than average. Also, in this photo from a year ago, I seem to be "cheating" a bit, by tipping my head back slightly!
That is all for now, but as always, comments are warmly welcomed! Also, thank you to everyone, for your kindness and support during the 19 months since I discovered the hyperboard!
Looks great David! You gonna keep growing that beard out too?
E
Hi Eric,
Thank you for your kind words about my update! About my beard, I have been maintaining it at about an inch with a beard trimmer, or 2-3 months of growth. At the present time, I do not really desire a long beard.
Take care,
David
Hi David,
It's nice to see an update from you.
Your hair looks great, with the grey and color combination.
I don't see why you should straighten it, but you mention it's a bit straighter than normal so maybe that explains it.
I can clearly see the difference, it's great that because of the hyperboard you can now grow it longer that you were able before!
Good luck with you waist lenght goal!
Hi Vincent,
Thank you for your kind words,a nd for your well wishes about my goal. About my earlier addiction to straightening irons, I know that in the earlier stages of my growth, I desired the really straight look, and straightening also made it look longer. But I learned my lesson the hard way, and have not touched an iron since September of 2006.
Thank you again,
David
Hi David,
Thank you so much for the truely amasing update pictures and it's really 4 years since you started growing you hair out. You certainly have been gifted with some great hair genes there. You certainly have a good hair care regime there and it shows with the natural colours and they also compliment the board as well. I would certainly keep growing the beard as it really completes a great look and I'm sure you are very happy with that.
Always great to see an update from you and look forward to more in the future.
Cheers,
John.B
Hi John,
It is always a pleasure to hear from you, and you always have kind and inspiring words that I genuinely appreciate. It HAS been 4 years, and my hair would be longer but for the nine months of nil growth that I experienced as a result of my addiction to irons, and the damage caused by them. Thankfully, my hair does seem to be growing again, even if a bit slowly. Although nothing like your thickness, I am reasonably happy for what I have at 54, nearly 55 years of age. Hopefully, you will have an update for us in the near future, and I hope things are going well for you these days too.
Cheers,
David
David,
Glad to hear your hair is still growing. For awhile, I thought my hair had stopped growing, but when I trimmed it a few months back, it seemed that those two inches I removed grew back plus two more. Keep it growing as your hair is looking nice.
Mike
Hi Mike,
Thank you for your kind words about my update! Also, thank you for sharing your great story, and I am happy for you that your hair has grown longer after you had thought it had stopped growing. Your braid photo looks great as well, and one day, I need to try a decent braid! I know that I may consider a trim at some time and hopefully my ends will be thicker afterwards.
Take care,
David
David,
I am glad you liked my braid. My Mom did that before the wedding as it looks a lot neater then a standard tail. Normally I just ware it tailed, or I will do a segmented tail. I have not learned to braid it myself. I do know how to do a bun, but for some reason, waring a bud tends to hurt my scalp as all the weight is in one place.
As for trimming, I start trimming about every six months as my ends were bad looking and all at different lengths. I was also having issues with tangles too.
Mike
Hello David!
I usually dont post, but when I saw your update I just had to say something.
Your hair looks great and you can clearly see it has grow a lot in a year.
I really hope you someday will reach your goal-lenght.
Aleksander
Hi Aleksander,
I am delighted that you stopped in to comment on my update, and thank you for your kind words. Hopefully, I will reach my goal of waist length or longer some day. I will be looking forward to your next update.
Take care,
David
David, Beautiful hair! 4 years and still growing. Wow! I have to wait until Nov to claim 4 years since I started growing the sides back out. The tail has been growing for going on 15 years now.
peace, jonalbear
Hi Jonalbear,
Thank you for your kind words about my update! Although I could only dream about having your thickness, hopefully, I can add on at least a few more inches to my current length.
Take care,
David
Simply stunning, Dave! Your hair has had my attention since the first day I found this site. You do have growth since the picture from the past, I can see it. I know you have more hair to grow, keep it growing!
.Hegg
Hi Hegg,
Thank you for your kind and inspiring post, and I am delighted to have served as an inspiration. Hopefully, I will be able to add a few more inches on to the lenghth.
Thank you again,
David
Lookin goooooood! ^.^ Keep it growing!
Tristan
<3
Hi Tristan,
Thank you for you kind words about my update, and I will definitely keep it growing!
Take care,
David
David;
Not only do you have significant length since joining the community, but the qualify and condition of your hair has improved dramatically. You are an inspiration to so many not only by your serious involvement, but also your example.
Thanks for Sharing
Walter
Hi Walter,
Thank you for your kind words, and I am delighted to have served as an inspiration to some of my fellow members. I really could not have possibly come this far without the support of everyone here at the hyperboard. Hopefully, you will be blessing us with an update soon.
Take care,
David
Your hair looks good, David.
You know, I am only a very few years younger than you, at 50, and my hair is no thicker than yours. However, in my case at least, my hair never was any thicker than this! Do you know for sure that yours used to be thicker than it is now? It may have been, of course. After all, people do say it thins with age, but I'm not sure they don't have a somewhat older group in mind? My dad's hair got noticeably thinner after maybe 70, for example. Just a thought. We are all different to begin with, so I suppose we all age differently.
I don't see why yours won't grow to at least waist length. I think someone on LHC said that most people can get it at least that long (BTW, they seem to be down right now, any ideas?). Mine touches my natural waist in the middle where it is longest, and we seem to have somewhat similar hair. I haven't had a trim for at least 4 years, and it was quite long before that. The growth seems to have slowed a bit, but I have heard that breakage at this length is supposed to be a problem, and mine breaks pretty easily anyway.
Hi Alun,
Thank you for your thoughtful and inspiring post! I am quite sure that my hair was noticeably thicker when I was in my mid to late 40's, the last time I had it long, and one way I can tell is the thickness of my bangs back then as compared to now. But I still consider myself fairly lucky to have the hair that I have at nearly 55 years old, when I see co-workers of mine around 30 years old who are nearly bald. Hopefully, my hair will not thin too much more as I grow older, and I can achieve my goal of at least waist length hair. I have also given some thoughts to a small trim at some point to improve the ends.
Thank you again,
David
One of my friends from when I was in college went bald on top, and then got a lot of pressure from family to cut, apparently just because they didn't like the combination of long hair with a bald top of the head. By family I suppose I mean his parents. He was already divorced from his wife by then, so she was out of the picture, and they had no kids of their own.
OTOH, I thought his hair looked better when he at least had longish hair at the sides (he never had longer than shoulder length anyway), but he caved in and cut it to above the collar. He would never have given in when he still had hair on top of his head. This was before men started shaving their heads to hide baldness. I haven't seen him for a while, so let's hope he hasn't been pressured into shaving the rest of his hair off!
In contrast I think we are lucky indeed.
Hi David,
I find every update of yours impressive. Your hair's thickness and overall condition has definitely improved. I think the combination of stopping the straightening and the Propecia have both served you well.
Thanks for the mention about my ends. Please remember though, I've had quite a few trims along the way. I had an inch cut last August and another 3/4 inch in January.
I don't see any reason why waistlength wouldn't be an attainable goal for you.
Jason
Hi Jason,
Thank you, as always, for your kind words, and for always being an inspiration to me in my hair growing journey. Hopefully, I will be able to raech my goal of at least waist length hair. I knwo that at some time I will need some sort of a trim that would hopefully improve my ends. Perhaps I could try the Feye's self trim method at some point, or another possibility is finding someone I know and trust who could do it for me! (I DO have someone in mind as a matter of fact, but that would not be until the fall!)
Take care,
David
Greetings David, was worth the wait for your update...your hair is looking mighty fine. And there is very noticeable difference from one year ago. I think your goal length is very realistic. Thanks for YOUR motivation! Congrats...and you know what you say...keep it growing!!!
Cheers!
Max
Hi Max,
Thank you so much for your kind words, and I am delighted to have served as a motivation to you! Also, I am very pleased that you were able to notice a difference in my length from last year, and hopefully, I will have a lot more growth to come!
Cheers,
David
Hi David,
I don't think your goal is too unrealistic. If you keep on taking such great care of your hair, you may very well get another foot or so in length out of it. Your hair looks great of course, and you are so lucky to have nice straight hair that can actually be brushed. I hope all is well in the icy northland :-). I know you are looking forward to retirement and hope you have all the time for golfing and travelling to your heart's content. Congrats too on acceptance into that august group of long haired scientists as well! I cannot remember if I remarked on that thread some days ago. I have to wonder if they'd buy the argument that the English language was a "science" and let me join one day if I ever do get thru school?
MB
Hi Matt,
Thank you for your kind words about my update, and I would be delighted to get another foot out of my hair, which would take me to my goal! My hair is always straighter after washing and conditioning, and the leave in conditioner I use always makes my hair seem striaghter as well. My hair is wavier the next day, and in humid weather, is almost curly!
I am definitely looking forward to retirement, and getting lots of golf in and have lots of travel plans too!
Take care,
David
Hi DavidN, nice pics, nice hair, and I sure love the color!
Frank
Hi Frank,
Thank you for your kind words about my update, and I cofess to enjoying the "natural highlights" myself!
Take care,
David
Wow David. What a simply SPECTACULAR Update and the BEST yet! You have beautiful long hair and I can only hope that when I catch up to you in age that I will be as fortunate. " :-) ? :-0 ??? Hic-cup, ah-hem,fake cough and wink. :-) " LOL
Your inspiration to this board has been enormous and your upbeat postings, care and genuine concern for other people is without any question of a doubt flawless.
Thanks for posting this update. Oh yes, at this point I think you may like just a dusting or about 1/2"-1" removed from the ends. You now have hair to spare and that little amount off would be hardly noticed..........but you WOULD notice nice thick ends. I do the same now myself about every 4 months and keep my hair between Waist and Belt level. The blunt ends work marvels with tangles and knots.
All the best-
Justin~
Hi Justin,
Thank you for your kind words about my update, and at not a day over 39, you DO have a lot of catching up as far as the age department goes, lol!
I really appreciate all your kind words about me as well, and if not for the fantastic support of everyone here, I never would have come this far, so I have a lot to be thankful for!
I had thought about a slight trim myself, if I can find someone I know and trust to do it for me. Another possibility is trying to see if I can trim it myself, with the Feye's technique.
All the best to you,
David
Dave - congratulations on 4 years!
You certainly are one happy man. I wouldn't worry about thickness - your hair looks quite thick. I bet you are the envy of everyone you meet!
Ed
Hi Ed,
Thank you for your kind words, and it is always a pleasure to have your encouragement, since you have always been an inspiration to me as well as everyone on the hyperboard.
I admit that I am quite happy these days, both with my hair, as well as other rather pleasant things happening in my life recently as well!
Take care,
David
that is awesome David! it has grown alot since your last update my friend! :) looks healthy and have great texture!
Hi Mark,
Thank you for your kind words about my update, and it is always a pleasure to hear from you. I hope things are going well for you these days too.
Take care,
David
Hi David!
Well let me give you the high five on reaching the four year milestone.By staying dedicated for that length of time it shows how much longhair means to you as you never gave up in spite of your unfortunate use of the dreaded straightening tool.Your hair in my opinion looks tremendous even at your age.And who's to say 55 is old anyway:)Just keep doing what your doing and you'll have even longer hair I'm sure. Thanks for the pics you posted David and I'm going to pick this one as my favorite.Take care my friend and stay warm up there north of the border.
Mark
Hi Mark,
Thank you for your always kind and encouraging words, and I agree that at age 55, my life is only just beginning, retirement and all, and so many things to look forward to! As far as the weather goes, it has been quite beautiful in Nova Scotia recently.
I should also add that it is a genuine pleasure having you work with us on the hyperboard team.
Take care,
David
Hey David, your hair is looking great! That's some wonderful length for 4 years, and I certainly can see a huge difference from last year's pic. Hope all is well for you out in Nova Scotia. See you around the board... =)
-James
Hi James,
It is always a pleasure to hear from you, and thank you for your kind words. Things HAVE been quite well for me in Nova Scotia, with some rather interesting things that have happened recently. There may be more details in future posts!
Also, thank you for being such an ispiration to everyone on the hyperboard, both with your outstanding website, and for your dedication to your own long hair journey.
Take care,
David
Looks great David! Glad to hear you've stopped that straightening ordeal.. I've seen sooo many people damage their hair from that!! Seems that people with straight hair want curls and vice versa.. I'd love to have wavy/curly hair ;-}> Congrats on your growth and thanks for the update!
Tom
Hi Tom,
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful post, and I am so glad that I ditched those irons a year and a half ago. also, I would like to add that your latest photo that you provided for Scott to be used on the MLHH card #2 is awesome, and hopefully, I will achieve your length some day.
Take care,
David
I am so glad that you were able to push past your errors and repair the damage done by past hair care techniques. You really have come a long way! It is inspiring to see you challenging many societal notions of longhairedness: many would assume that by saying you 'experiment with different chemicals' most days, you actually implied something else. Glad to have you counted in the ranks of long-hair, DAvid. (And now, a luxuriant scientist to boot!)
You are doing so well.
Mr.Crow
PS Your hair is getting rather long and, if you wished to even the ends out and get the appearance of thicker ends, a small trim may serve very well. If not, your hair is in fine shape anyway.
Hi Shawn,
It is always great to hear from you, and thank you for your kind words about my hair as well as my acceptance into the LFHCFS website. If I can find someone I know and trust to do a small trim, I would like to do that, and another possibility is to do a trim myself using the Feye's technique that Bruce (Scooper) used a couple of months ago.
I hope everything is going well with you, Holly, and all your family.
Take care,
David
Hi David..
I have to say that your hair has really come a long way in the last year I've been here on mlhh. The length has improved as well as the thickness. Excellent job. I'm glad you're shooting for belt length; I think you have a great shot at getting there my friend..
Take care and talk to you soon..
Tristan
Hi Tristan,
Thank you for your kind words, and it is always a pleasure to hear from you. Hopefully, with the wonderful support of everyone here, I will achieve my goal, which would be a dream come true. Your own hair growing journey is coming along very well indeed, and my best to you in beautiful Colorado.
Take care,
David
Hi David,
As always your update looks fantastic. I appreciate also your kindness and your commitment to MLHH. Thank you.
Take care
SamsoKera
Hi SamsoKera,
Thank you for your kind words, both about my update, and about me as well. I hope everything is going well with you.
Thank you again,
David
The pony-tail is my favourite :-)
Rose
Hi Rose,
Thank you for your kind words about my update, and i admit to enjoying my natural silvers.
Thank you again,
David
Fantastic update David, your hair looks very healthy and thick, a lot thicker than mine. I'd say your hair is growing at a fairly normal rate. Consider the postion of your head from a year ago and the more relaxed pose of this year. Thats close to 6 inches!
Well I hope the perafrost is finally thawing and you can stop useing orange golf balls.
Take care,
Bruce
Hi Bruce,
Thank you for your kind words about my update, and it is great to know that it is still growing! I was very impressed with the success of your recent trim, and how thick and even your your ends looked as a result of that trim. Hopefully, you will be posting an update soon. One day, I hope to take the bull by the horns and either trim myself using the Feye's technique (as you did), or have someone I can trust do a trim for me.
Also, we have actually had some VERY nice weather lately in Nova Scotia, and my golf course is expected to open a week from Friday!
Take care,
David
Your hair looks fantastic in this photo, David. I like the way it just flows down your back like a waterfall. Keep it growing and flowing.
Scott
Hi Scott,
Thank you for your kind words, and I admit that I really liked your choice of words to describe my hair! Hopefully, my goal of waist length will become a reality some day.
Take care,
David
What an outstanding update! I would certainly agree that you're still gaining length. Thanks for all of your support and work around the board, and keep it growing!
Mouse
Hi Mouse,
Thank you for your encouraging words about my update, and it is always a pleasure to hear from you. All of us on the hyperboard really appreciate the support you have given us, and you have not missed any of my updates. You are one of the most valued members of our community, and it is a joy having you with us.
As always, my very best to you,
David
DavidN, thank you for sharing these inspirational update photographs. I look forward to having such length in another couple of years. Thanks for helping us to stay motivated.
Hi Stan,
Thank you for your kind words about my update, and I am delighted to serve as an inspiration. You are doing very well in your own hair growing journey, and things can only get better and better!
Take care,
David
Hey David! Thanks for another great update, you've got a really cool look going on there, and your hair looks very healthy nowadays:D
Take care and keep up the good work!=))
Simon
Hi Simon,
Thank you for your kind words about my latest update, and I hope everything is going well with you these days. I am looking forward to your latest update as well!
Take care,
David
Hi David !
I'm glad that your hair is still growing : after four years it's not evident for anyone I suppose :) There is a huge difference with last year ! Thanks for sharing the update.
Vivien
Hi Vivien,
Thank you for your kind words, and I am delighted to hear that you can see a significant increase in length from last year. Hopefully, I will be able to achieve my goal of waist length hair. I hope everything is going well with you, and thank you for all your hard work on the tech crew!
Take care,
David
Awesome hair David, you're probably one of the most valued members of this board and I do see a noticable improvement from your previous update. If your hair can recover from something negative like the period between december 05 and september 06, I think it can achieve belt length no problem!
The ponytail is my favorite pic, can't wait to achieve my own
Hi Dio,
Thank you for your kind words about both me and my hair, and hopefully, I can achieve my goal of waist length hair. Before you know it, you will have a ponytail of yor own, so just hang in there!
Take care,
David
Hey David, congrats with hitting the 4 year mark! Continue to grow your hair for sure, you never know how long your hair will grow. Btw I think the ponytail suits you very well
Hi Tom,
Thank you for your kind words about my hair and ponytail, and I will definitely keep it growing!
Take care,
David
