People keep mentioning layers to me, i dont know what they are, but i'm pretty sure you have to have it done. I havent, yet people act as though i have.
(I'm not going to get layers, i want to know why people think i have them)
Layers can happen two ways. If you start with short hair that's all about the same length and do nothing as it all grows out, you will have layers.
Think of the hair that grows closest to your collar area and then compare it to the hair growing on top of your head. When both areas are 6 inches long, the hair growing from your collar area will obviously hang a lot lower than the 6 inch hair on the top of your head. This gives your hair a layered effect.
A lot of people, including me, prefer the all-one-length look which is achieved by cutting the hair closest to the collar until the hair from the top of the head can catch up to it. This makes for a blunt hemline. Once all your hair is at that same length, you can just let it grow out at one length.
The other way layers are achieved is by intentionally having them cut into your hair once it is long.
Be careful. "Layers" is a way to give a longhair shorthair. Natural layers are natural. But if they cut layers, the ability to ponytail goes away and the benefit of long hair (such as controllability) goes away because while length down the back is the same, not all hairs are there.
So basically, layers give a uniform length from different starting points...so no matter where the hair goes, it will be X inches. Otherwise (or un-layered) gives a uniform destination...so every hair will reach coordinate (A,B,C).
Very well said, Jason & Antesse!
I couldn't have done better myself...
I already made some explenations on this topic in your other post.
I belong to those long hairs who keep their hair line natural and I have to say thay I enjoy it and don't have any plans of evening out my hair-line. I have curly hair and love the wild, nice layerd look of it. Sure, it was difficult to manage in the awkward stage and it looks much longer at the back than at the front, but I can't imagine anything else. I think blunt ends would look like really strange on curly hair, so I plan to keep it that way. This means that my hair will also have these layers when it reaches terminal length one day. Your hair will never grow even naturally. So choose for your self, but keep in mind that you almost can't undo the removal of your layers (the only way of geting such "natural layers" back is by growing from short to long or by growing down to terminal, cut layers never look the same).
But this doesn't mean that I'm against evened hair, it's just my personal choise. I really admire Jason's hair, although I think fairy tale ends could suit him aswell. But it would be quite a different look.
I remember the photo you once posted, taken of your friend Josh. As far as I remember he had somewhat natural layers in his hair, maybe with a small trim, but it was not out-evened.
