I think long hair looks very impressive on alot of people but I'm not to fond of how mine looks, but don't care to much as I'm not growing it for image reasons.
But I was just wondering how many here are growing for spiritual, religious or any other reason than looks/image, and if so what reasons?
All answers appreciated
Thanks!
very good question and i got a very good answer for ya...
i love mine cause of appearence as well as spiritual feelings i get from having long hair its just who i am and i love every bit of it i feel complete with long hair in other words!
I can't say image isnt one of the reasons I am growing it out, but I will add that I also was sick and tired of the cookie cutter short haired look that seemingly everyone in my town seems to have.
I am also a believer in the whole natural look thing. ;)
just my $0.02
I feel like it's a natural thing to have long hair. It's almost spiritual, but not entirely, for me. I like the feeling of it on my head, shoulders, and back, as well as the feeling of my girl running her fingers thru it. If that ain't a good enough reason..... :-D

Everyone should be free to do whatever they want to their own bodies, of course. But, I just think men look their best when they embrace their genes that say, "grow long hair and a beard." I think the human body usually looks its best the way it naturally is, without modifications, that's all.
I'm sure I could look fine with short hair, and it would be much easier to maintain... don't have to worry about leaving 2 hours for my hair to dry. But there are a few reasons why I grow it long... Most of the time, I like how it looks on me. Long hair is natural, and I think more people should do as nature intends. Long haired men are underrepresented, and I feel I should support their cause.
My reason is spiritual mostly, and that I just feel more natural this way.
I grow mine as a personal preference. It can be hard to explain to others (not that I need to), but it is what I want.
I tell people apart by their hair, and men without substantial manes or any facial hair look like part of their face is missing to me. Ugly! It is also a major creep-out if you can't recognize yourself, and without the hair I would not be able to.

Because ever since I was a kid I wanted long hair. Why? I
don't know if I can answer that but long hair is just a part of
my being I guess.
Well, my whole life I have been going against mainstream. And because having short hair as a man these days, I would say short hair is the standard. And yes, I like being different! Also, I think long hair, and I mean really long hair, would look good on me.
I haven't cut my hair at all since I began a new career and working on a new degree; if I were to cut it, I might become stupid and lose all I had learned! Really though, I really like having longer hair just because it represents self and confindence of self in some ways inasmuch as one must hold true through many things to acheive long hair. Plus I like the way it looks, most of the time.
Thanks to all that replied! :)
Haha, I know you meant this as a joke but maybe the lenght of our hair could be seen as a visual representation of all the knowledge we gain over that time period of growing, either way I liked that sentence :)
So, so far no one who does it for specific religious reasons? I'd be intrigued to here them if there's anyone out there doing it for such a reason.
Your basic fundamental Christians wouldn't have long hair, for religious reasons. On the Long Hair Community, there are a lot of Christian women with long hair for religious reasons, many of them have (or had) in their sig line the verse from I Corinthians 11:15 -- but if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her. That is actually the second part of the full quote, and I notice those same women avoid the first part. The full bit, starting in verse 14 is: Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her?
Aside from aboriginal peoples from various cultures, are there any religions that specifically require or urge long hair on men, more than just the temple locks like in Hasidic Jews?
Sikhs of both sexes are expected to never cut their hair. The men wear it wrapped up in turbans most of the time and their beards also twisted in some clever way so that they don't hang down. I believe that they consider hair a gift from God which should not be spurned by cutting it off.
Probably quite a few people here might agree with that!
Alot of native tribes of the America's I think only cut there hair to grieve a death or sometimes would cut it if they were fighting in a war e.g Mohawks but other than that grew it as a bond to the earth/creator/spirits. And of course many followers of Rastafari let their hair grow according to some verses in the bible;
"They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in the flesh" - Leviticus 21:5
"All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow." - Numbers 6:5
Unfortunately living in Ireland I can't connect such people to discuss their faith with them, though I did see what I believed to be a Rasta once I didn't want to bother him :o
I wanted it, so I got it
I just feel it suits me, I couldn't see myself without it
I've grown mine because I was never allowed to have it growing up.. I've always felt I was suppose to have it long and now that I've got it I wouldn't cut it off any more than I'd cut off my hand.. It's not a spiritual or religious thing, it's just who I am..

I like long hair just because it symbolizes freedom and embodies a powerful sense of strength in me, and also, with my Wiccan beliefs, I hold that it gives me magickal energy. It feels great, too.
