In my futile attempts to find employment, the main reasons for forcing men to cut their hair when in a customer service job is that older americans may find it too counterculture. Apparently according to employers polls or however they figure this stuff out, people that were a part of the "establishment" in the 60's so to speak are still afraid of anyone they might consider to be a "hippie". According to my most recent studies, older Americans as well as young professionals (A.K.A YUPPIES) still have the view that males with long hair, and especially those with tattoos are more likely to be criminals, smoke pot or do other drugs, have wild sexual affairs, among a myriad of other false assumptions. Seriously, I thought we were past the days of judging someone based soley on appearance, but apparently we aren't.....
Quote edited by me a bit.
I can only hope ....
Judging someone based on appearance is part of human nature and isn't going to go away any time soon... Society has become more concerned with "hiding" this fact then eliminating it. Stereotypes come about from repetition and usually with good reason but as we all know, don't apply to everyone... Being self employed and in the body modification industry I am free to be who I am, however that may be from day to day.. I like being different.. no.. LOVE being different from the "norm" and I find it rather amusing the looks I get while I'm out and about. While I have long hair, piercings and quite a few tattoos people assume I'm "trouble" with a list of bad habits and uncliamed children! LOL It's fun when the realization hits them that I am none of the above and actually well-to-do and highly respected... That's Priceless!

It isn't the case ? [grins]
Seriously, I think they may be afraid by what they can't control. Shorthair is the "norm", so we are against the norm; it might be reassuring for them to know they have a control in forcing us to cut. No ?

PS : The photo is two years old, for a Carnival, if I remember.
Wild sexual affairs, since when is that a bad thing? ;)
All the short haired politicians have them.

Haha!! Good one, Kevin!
Hello Everyone,
I do think that the assumption that some employers have that longhairs are criminal are dated, and the employers themselves are likely to have had long hair in their college days. I have encountered senior citizens who say they like my hair. People are used to long hair.
Yesterday, our hockey team, in Montreal creamed Boston 5-0, and a celebration took place outside the Bell Center, and it quickly degenerated into a riot.
A local newspaper "La Presse" posted pictures on their web site. You will see that the rioters are very presentable, and they were not rioting for a just cause, it was just drunken mob culture.
Click the link below, to see the pictures, you do not need to understand French, for the pictures speak for themeselves.
Have a nice day,
Georges.
Montreal's shame

And unfortunatly we probably never will be. I have been dealing with that issue all mylife. It used to bother me, now I just accept it as a partof life that I will never be able to change
LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME

I have never had any issues regarding my hair in public. People always seem to smile or nod hello to me. I think that has to do because I have a very friendly appearance, and I often smile when I seem approaching strangers.
I think the general area has a lot to do with this issue too. Hampton Roads VA is very diverse with people from everywhere.
The only issue I seemed to have was in Salt Lake City Utah. I did get a few ugly looks.
Judging people by their appearance is part of the human psyche. A select few may resist the temptation, but most will not, so I wouldn't be so surprised. It's actually an incredibly important evolutionary trait, the ability to put people into categories. Initially it came as a self-defense thing. Primitive people had to categorise to decide "will this person harm me or not?" as quickly as possible. While you could say this is in many ways obsolete, and I would agree, it may take many thousands of years to eliminate this trait, and really I doubt it would ever happen.
