So lately I've been getting an above average amount of dandruff on my head, and I',m wondering...why exactly does this happen, and what can I do to get rid of it? It's kinda a problem because I don't own a single shirt that isn't black, so it shows up...
Besides the flakes, I also get weird scab type things on my head, that come out of nowhere, that either bleed or pus...furthermore, during boring classes I tend to doze off and pick at them...yes, I know that's gross, forgive me for mentioning it, but I'm really curious as to what the hell this is from...
Does it have any connection to wearing a hat? I tend to wear a beanie 99% of the time so I don't have to straighten my hair, it's a really easy way to keep it under control. My hunch is that it dries out my scalp...yes? No? Maybe?
Furthermore, while on the subject of hats (beanies, specifically), one of my female friends recently told me I shouldn't wear one every day because it will pull on the roots of my hair and make it fall out...I told her she was completely wrong, but I'm starting to wonder, could there be any truth to her notion?
My first thought was no, there wouldn't be a correlation, but then I thought more. It's now believed that dandruff is caused by a fungus. What kind of environment do fungi like? Dark and moist. Under your beanie it's dark, and with no air-flow to your hair and scalp, it can get moist, especially with natural oils and sweat.
There are very good shampoos, like Head & Shoulders, formulated for dandruff. I'll suggest doing a trial, about a month should be enough time to at least see if there's a difference. When you shampoo, use the pads of your fingertips (where your fingerprints are), do NOT use your nails. Also, for this month do NOT wear a beanie or anything on your head, to get fresh air and sunshine to your scalp. If you see an improvement, try adding the beanie for a few hours a day, like during school hours. If that makes things worse, you know you've found a culprit.
< mom mode>And stop picking at your scalp!
In addition..
Also would be a good idea to get a new beanie.. Wearing the old one would more than likely cause the problem all over again.. I've been wearing hats for years without issue.. Good luck

Forget about it, if it's what I think this is, and I also have it, then this has absolutely nothing to do with wearing hats, as I never wear any headwear (in rain I use an umbrella).
This is probably Seborrheic Dermatitis, which is genetic. About 3-4% of people have it, but according to my doctor simply having the condition is not enough, it doesn't always manifest itself. Sometimes it can get serious, other times it completely disappears. According to him, they haven't actually found the reason for which the seborrhea manifests itself, seemingly at random. I find that hard to believe tbh, but who knows it might be true. Eitherway, the shampoo he has given me isn't working, so I honestly don't know what to recommend. I've had this for about a year now, very annoying.
I think someone else on this board (can't remember who) had the same problem and it went away. Let's see if he sees this thread.
I forgot to add, this might also be linked to psoriasis.
I was taking his diagnosis at face value, I hadn't thought about other conditions.
It sounds like a trip to a dermatologist would be in order, if only to eliminate some conditions.
The dandruff can be treated with H&S or another decent shampoo. scabs could be something worse. See a Dr.
