nothing was cut from the back, and not much from the front. It was only the sides properly cut, to keep the flicks at bay for a few months.
I made the right decision i'm sure, because now i feel like growing it out again properly, and as it looks basically the same, just without flicks, it isnt really like i lost any time.
I wont post a pic because i knows its a bit taboo here.
But it was a good thing to do

how that could be good. If anything you should have cut the back only with nothing from the front. Those side flips will be right back shortly and now your front is going to take forever to grow long enough to reach a tail.
I'm not against trims. I trimmed my back only for the first 2 years and I get small trims every 6 months but I just don't understand how what you described could be good. Sorry.
It's just that, the fact the flips are gone now, have given me confidence to carry on growing it for a lot longer hopefully.
And the front, little more than a quater of an inch, cant even tell.
The "flips" are gone now and you have confidence. The flips WILL return however. What then?
If you can't even tell, then why even bother?
Agreed with Justin here. The flips are a product of your hair's natural wave. They will return. If left alone they become the waves that add character to a magnificent mane- an accomplishment which trimming prevents. Having been through the stages of growth and being blessed with a wave I can identify with the flip frustration but from an objective standpoint, your latest progress pictures offered an aesthetic quality that flip removal does away with.
Take a look at the flips I had during the awkward stage. They passed and now they're long waves that I really like.
My flips
I must say, Jason, your website is truly inspriring. After looking at your progess photos I feel like I can accomplish what you have (Beautiful long healthy hair). Thank you for the influence and for sharing your journey on that site.
See Beanz, his flips went away, no trim was needed!
Thanks a lot Hegg. I'm glad my website can serve as a source of inspiration.
Lets not "flip" out. LoL sorry I just had to.

Yeah I hated my flips too. I used to blow dry with a round brush and try to turn the flips under. My biggest mistake was trimming the front about 3 times. After 3 years of growth the front still doesnt stay in the pony tail....ughhhh If I had it to do again I wouldn't go near my hair with a scissors

I had a little trick I used for dealing with those. I'd let my hair dry with the sides weighted down a bit with some clips just heavy enough to hold the sides straight down. when dry I'd remove them and not have any flips as long as my hair stayed dry. I did this every day for about 8 months until the problem passed.
It should take around 4 months to get back to that stage, but when i do, i will do everyhting but cutting until its over.
I have to agree with Jason completely. If you hate the flips, that was probably the stupidest thing to do. Now you will have flips again and for just as long as you did before, possibly longer if you continue growing it out. They call it the awkward stage for a reason. It will pass, but only if you let it grow out. It also sounds like you got a mullet, "leaving the back and trimming the sides and front". Sorry if I seem offensive, but I'm a tad insulted that you asked for our advise and then didn't listen to a word of it.
So there you go trimmers!
So why not an update that's certainly not taboo not that I'm aware.
Cheers,
John.B
a trim for the sake of having a trim it seems...
You will never get long hair if you trim, especially this early in your growing. Your flips will be back this summer if you don't get more trims.
Next time just wait them out and eventually the weight of longer hair will help keep them under control. I know the awkward stage can be fustrating but trimming just prolongs it.
I have always thought there is nothing wrong with flips, in fact, they look extremely cool. (a neutral observation)
If your happy with it that's good. Although I suggest no trims unless extreme damage or other compelling reason if peopel want to that's fine but I say it will only provide short term relief and prolong the awkward stage. Then again your young you have loads of time to grow it out.
Good luck to you.

Bad move kiddo, those little "flips" will come back to pester you once more, after what you've just trimmed off grows back. Leave it alone and let it grow, those flips will turn into long flowing hair. Plus, you can save yourself the money and use it on something more "productive".
a few months. Your hair can't grow through your neck and shoulders, so it has to grow around them. This is why flips occur in the first place. Flips are a bump in the road that we all have to endure. They are unavoidible during the critical growing out process. Next time they show up, just stick it out. It may take a year which can seem like forever for someone 14 or 15 years old but in the end it is worth it.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but odds are the awkward stage will manifest itself again in some other way. I don't think there is any way around it. It's part of the journey. Embrace the awkwardness, and it will disappear.
As long as you are happy with the results, then that is all that matters at this point. At least you didn't go out and get a buzz cut! lol! Now that would have been a set back. I'm sure most of us wouldn't mind seeing your new starting point, at least to satisfy our curiosity. After all, lots of guys (and some gals) on the board get trims from time to time. Well, best of luck!

I wouldn't have that trim myself but if it helps you through the akward stage then it's your choise.
Many of us go through it...it's just part of the process. Of course, you gotta do what feels right for you. If you continue growing your hair you'll get another chance to face and conquer them...hopefully without the scissors. Best of luck!
I needed it, i would have sacrificed the whole lot if i hadnt sacrificed one part, and i really really hope i can continue without any trims whatsoever from now on.
Just keep in mind...having flips means your hair is growing. So, they should be celebrated and not feared, in my opinion. I actually ENJOYED the flip stage. Call me crazy. But, I had no issues with them whatsoever. After having my head buzzed I was ecstatic to be in the flip stage! They will come and they will go. Nothing to worry about. Sounds like you needed the trim for a bit of confidence. There's no shame in it. Maybe now you'll have the chance to build up your courage again and see yourself through the stage once and for all. I'm pulling for you, Beanz. Best of luck!

Hi Beanz
My opinion on trimming your hair is that trimming is only an option if your hair is already very long and have gotten seriously damaged and you need to get rid of the damaged ends. If you hair is intact or even minorly damaged, it is best to let your hair do its own thing. You can comb it or gel it to keep the flips temporarly under control without losing ground.
By the way, thanks to my dad, my dad trimmed my hair himself so I can look good for my cousin's wedding. To my opinion, I look just the opposite. Before my trim, my crown was thick and sturdy, and kept my head warm when the weather was cold. After the trim, my hair became thin and flimzy, and my head felt cold when I was outside. Going to the hair salon would not be any better, since I may get a larger amount of hair cut off. After the wedding was over, I decided to be very strict about growing out my hair.
I suggest you do the same, as it is best to let nature do its own thing, and you will quickly pass the awckward stage. By the way, I can't wait to see you once you have very long hair.
Good luck, and remember, I, who made plans to join MLHH later this month, am on your side.
