I was just wondering what your guy's experiences are with driving with the window down. For me, it's impossible unless I have my hair restrained. It's too short for a tie, so I just use a bandana.
The reason I ask is because some people seem to have no problem with the wind, whereas my hair whips into my face at the slightest breeze. It will not stay behind my ears no matter what. My gf has longish hair (1.5 feet) and it never gets in her way, yet when I had hair that long two years ago, I still had to use a bandana. Is there something about certain people's hair that catches the wind more than others? And more importantly, are there certain haircuts or techniques to reduce the sail effect short of physical restraints?
In my experience length sorta helps.. It's possible some women don't experience problems due to having bangs? In my earlier stages I couldn't drive with my window open at just past shoulder length. Most of my hair is close to or longer than 3ft now and it's more tolerable but some of the short pieces still fly around in my face.. so I just keep it in a tail or wear a hat, the less tangles the better!
Tom
I always carry some kind of hat with me. I love the way the wind blows my hair around, even in my face. However driving like that could be dangerous so I carry a hat, don't always wear it though.
My hair whips in front of my face too, but I don't mind :P
Although I guess it isn't exactly the smartest thing to do.
What probably helps most w/ longer hair is a blunt cut/one length style. OTOH, there is also less of a problem w/ thicker/coarser hair, and that's a matter of genetics.
For example, I have grown out any layering long ago, but I have fine/thin hair, which weighs less so is blown around more easily, tangles more, and breaks more easily, especially if it tangles, but this is the hair nature gave me. So, yes, natural hair type does make a difference.
Everyone has some short hairs on their head, because each hair has it's own separate growth cycle (which is a good thing, because if they didn't they would all fall out together at the end of the growth cycle!). I think maybe having fine hair makes those short hairs more apt to become 'flyaway' hairs when the wind blows.
Depending on the aerodynamics of your vehicle, and depending on speed, there is usually some point short of a fully open window where your hair will stay put, and then open it a fraction more and the wind will blow you hair everywhere.
Tying your hair back generally stops this from happening, but OTOH if the window is open atall your hair always gets some buffeting from the wind, whether you notice it at the time or not. Braiding/plaiting your hair is much more effective, but it tends to require more hair than a ponytail, unless all your hair is of very equal length.
