I just got my maintenance trim...it was a little over a year since the last one...and now that it's to the bottom of my knees (thought I was already at terminal length, but apparently not) I found that I need to stand up for the person trimming it otherwise they have to stoop uncomfortably low towards the floor if I sit in the chair.
LOL, such burdens length brings, eh? (It's still worth it.)
I always know when it's time for a trim as the ends become rather prone to tangles, but a couple of inches off makes it right as rain again.
LOL, it's all relative, isn't it? Standing next to you, I'm sure most of us here would feel like we all have crew cuts (I would feel so, at least)!!
By the way.... I don't think I've ever properly thanked you for something: I believe it was on your HairReligion site that I frist read about the "Search & Destroy" method of going after trimming split ends individually. This has helped me tremendously in gaining more length on my own hair (which has now definitely reached belt-length), since I can go for longer durations of time now between having to go into a salon for a professional trim. And I know what you mean by thinking you've reached terminal length, when, lo & behold, to my surprise, too, my hair seems to keep getting longer (although it certainly seems to be crawling at a much slower rate these days)...
I haven't been to your website in awhile; but, one of these days I'll check it out again... it was one of the first personal hair-related websites I learned about, right after I discovered MLHH in the fall of '03. So, a much belated THANKS!!
Take Care,
Ken in San Francisco
Hey Ken, glad someone has gotten something from the site.
I think that as our hair gets longer we just either don't notice that it keeps getting longer or with the damage that can occur from thin strands being around for so many years it "slows" down a bit.
Not quite long enough to do that type of trimming yet. Great site by the way. Just looked.
Thanks, if you ever have any suggestions just send me an email.

I am glad that you posted this. Thanks!
I had thought terminal for myself was about 1/2 butt-length. I do not believe this to be the case anymore as keeping the ends trimmed so as not to be wispy and thin causing tangles and knots has now gotten it below belt level and ALL looks thick and strong. I am almost tempted to let it go at this point but what may very well hold me back is the extra care involved. (Oh, I sound so lazy.........alas.) Belt length for myself is quite managable, but based on experience before (however "without" thick hair ends) butt length was a real hassel. Perphaps not so "if" the hair is still thick and the comb still sails right through with ease. I'll be giving it a try. One thing for sure for myself is that as long as possible my hair will remain waist to belt length always.
If you're used to it at that length you'll find it's not much different a little bit longer and considering how slow hair grows you'll have time to acclimate without really noticing.

Interesting that you have said this as I am rather finding this out right now. "If" all remains easy I will let it go. "Easy" meaning not spending an hour a day on untangling and unknotting the ends of the hair that had worn too thin. I "thought" I had reached terminal before............but perhaps not. Anyway, time will tell for sure. I am curious: how long is your own hair and at the stage you are yourself with long hair how often do you find a trim in order? Hope you don't mind me asking.
Thanks again for bringing up this subject.
Justin~
It's to my knees now (the trim took off about three inches or so). An inaccurate quick measurement shows at least 44 inches.
I only get a trim once a year now. I was getting a few a year up to about two years ago.
Well it's great to see your hair is still growing and must be a nice surprise when you think it's a terminal length and it keeps growing.
You got great head of hair there and certainly an wonderful inspiration to others that are growing theirs out and there is life after belt length.
Cheers,
John.B
That must be another sign that one's a longhair - when one has to stand up to get a trim (;-)
I too notice my ends get stringy due to lack of trimming (my last trim was 3.5 years ago).

with a few strands reaching slightly beyond that point. Good for mid 50s for sure. Height affects knee length. It will be greater for someone 6'6" tall than someone that is 5'6" tall. From your photos I have estimated your height to be 5'8". Your hair is at least as long as mine, and probably a tad longer. I am 5'9" tall. I measure and save my longest shed strands. The longest one saved so far is 45 1/4" long and is in a zip lock bag. The date on it is March 10 2008.
Here is a useful tip:
For trimming your hair at your knees, it may be helpful to stand on a step stool. This will put the ends of your hair closer to eye level. This makes it easier for the hairdresser to trim the ends evenly, giving the best results.
Your hair looks fantastic Erik. You have a mane to be proud of. Men with hair longer than classic length are a rare and elite group. Probably fewer than 1 in 10,000 men have hair that is longer than classic length. Even here on MLHH, I know of only 4.
Long hair forever.
Scott
Scott, what is Classic length?
Todd
Hi Todd, here is what classic length looks like. This guy has been shown on MLHH awhile back. I saved a copy to avoid having to scour the archives which can take hours.
Scott
I'm about 5'10" but your pic is about what mine looks like except that my ends trail off a bit more I think.
Thanks for saying so!

How does trimming the ends help with the tangles? What happens to the hair to cause the tangles and what does trimming do to help?
Todd B.
After hair has been around for awhile (my ends ought to be 10+years easily) it gets rough, worn out, split, etc. and tangles much easier with hairs near by.
Trimming off the really damaged ends brings the hairs up to healthier parts and tangles less.
