I have been a reader for about 6 years. Had a nice (but thinning) shoulder length cut. I went (and now wear full-time) great length extensions, (about $1000 every 3 months).
If you're in a hurry this is the way to go. Every quarter I go about 3 inches longer.
Enjoy
Guess this would never be the way for me to go as I don't have 3,000.00 per month to spend on extentions. However for free I have what is shown. Your extensions do look well however.
I think we all learn great lessons by taking our time growing our hair out.Your hair might look great, but it just doesn't give you the same feeling as you would get if you grew your hair naturally.
Seems you're the only one I now know that likes their Xtns. For $3K/month I can learn to gain patience. ;-) Good luck with your hair.

I can think of worse things to spend $333/month on. I probably wouldn't have noticed those were extensions in that particular picture if you hadn't mentioned it.
Enjoy!

I would not call that a particularly great length. Looks more like a mediocre length to me.
Also, there's a huge difference between "being a longhair" and "having long hair". The growing out process, which takes a few years, usually in the face of repetitive criticism, builds character in a longhair that cannot be replicated by throwing on a wig or weaving in extensions. We say here that a man gets as much growth under his scalp as he gets on top of it, when he grows out his mane, and that growth takes about the same amount of time. When you throw on a wig or extensions, you miss out on that growth. Do not be surprised if other longhairs scoff at you a bit for going the route of extensions. We grow our membership cards, and you have not grown yours.
Bill
Aw. Am I less of a longhair because I've never heard a hair-related criticism?
I can't imagine somebody being criticized for long hair here in Seattle. First, because it seems so mild compared to all the other things people do to their bodies here. Second, because you can't walk a block without seeing a longhair so criticizing longhairs would have to be a full-time job.
It's not that you havent been criticized, it's that you chose to "buy" your hair [extensions] instead of proudly showing off your mane and just growing it au natural.
In my opinion, getting hair extensions is like cutting in line. Looks good, but still I think the patience to grow your own hair is worth saving $333 every month.
Well I'll just save my money and put it towards a nice holiday and be a REAL hairfarmer!
Cheers,
John.B
I think it looks great Tobi! Don't be surprised if you don't get alot of great comments on this board. Despite what most people think, I paid my dues the natural way, I grew my hair out for 7 years only to discover my terminal length was just over my shoulders and I was thinning on the top. I elected to go with extensions too and have been very happy with them, although mine are not as expensive, I love the look. I add extra length with clip in extensions sometimes too.
Any way enjoy and feel free to chat with me about it :-)
BTW, I posted pics of me with extensions a while ago and got ZERO comments on it here
If that's the way you want to go be my guest. As for me, growing my hair is like taking a cross country drive. Yeah it takes longer, but you get to enjoy the journey. Getting hair extensions is like taking a plane instead. I like knowing that my hair is all MINE, not somebody else's. Plus there are many more things I would rather spend the money on.
Don't see how someone can be "in a hurry" to get long hair, but whatever.

To my point of view, it is more fun for me when my hair is natural. I actually never heard of hair extenders, but now that I read your statement about hair extention, to my point of view, it is better to just be patient and naturally grow out my hair. I decided to grow out my hair, naturally, and I prefer to spend money on downloading my favorite songs on iTunes rather than on hair extention. Plus, 1000 dollars every three months make this of no value. It is also a good idea to avoid haircuts and trims, as they would make you want to wear extentions more often. Be patient and you will have long hair free of charge.
I found some of your followups funny to read, by the way. :)

I think your hair looks great and who cares if it's extensions. If this is a way to see how you look as a longhair and if you like long hair, why not? Women spend billions probably on extensions and they look great. I like the journey to growing my own long hair but don't see the problem. It seems hypocritical to say you must go through the criticism of growing your hair long and then criticizing a guy with longhair. Do you grow your own food? I don't but I eat the food that others grow for me (too much at times). I understand the challenge of growing my hair and I enjoy it but my goal is to have long hair. Kudos to you, it looks great and if it makes you happy it's worth every penny.
I'm remembering an old commercial from the 70's for a brand of margarine.
"If You think it's butter but it's not......it's Chiffon"
Ok so he's not a proper longhair but free to spend his money as he wishes. If hair extentions make you happy then be happy.
Kevin
I too remember that commercial.
"It's not nice to fool Mother Nature".

Pay no attention to any long hair that has negative comments. They're probably just jealous that yours looks better than theirs ;-) No one will ever know unless you tell them.
The ones that do, just remind them that you wore yours at shoulder length for some time. Men usually get enough comments even at shoulder length. And you'll get negative comments by wearing your this length, regardless of it being extensions or not.
Can I ask how you got the curls? They look great.
Beleive me jealous we're not. LOL
Kevin
Maybe you should be ;-)
It's your way to do it, I rather spend that money on something else.
Gee I didn't think anybody did extensions anymore as I remember hearing about them in the 1980s when the Metal scene was popular here in the US.All the new startup local metal bands had guys with longhair and I know some went for extensions to speed up the process.I guess in that case it was fine as they wanted that image metal is famous for quickly. As for myself I just did it the old fashion way and let it grow.I did goof up in the late 80s by going in for a perm.Big mistake!LOL.My hair naturally is dead straight and seeing all those curls on me looked funny:)Oh well live and learn.I'm just so proud today to be enjoying my longhair and its all MINE MINE MINE!
Mark
... how the deal with extensions works. I mean, do you get your natural hair cut back when you get the new extensions, or is this supposed to give you the immediate results while you're waiting for your own hair to reach the desired length?
Gosh, this site is populated by a bunch of intolerant people. How can you all be so critical of someone's preferences? There's nothing wrong with extensions. Tobi, I think your hair looks great. Congratulations!
The downside of hairpieces, extensions, and wigs is that they are fake. Representing them as real is right up there with saying you got war medals when you didn't, that you got a college degree when you didn't, that you got a state license to practice a profession but you didn't, etc. Long hair is GROWN, and if people are led to think you grew it, that is misrepresentation. You can expect that it would particularly irritate people who DID go through the usual process. If you claim to have war medals and didn't, veterans will not think that is cool. If you claim to have a college degree and really don't, people who earned the degree will not think that is cool. If you do work that requires a license and you don't have it, people who earned the license will not thing that is cool. You can expect that many longhairs will not consider faked hair as cool.
We had one user on here for awhile who wore a hairpiece over his bald spot but he was open with it and posted photos of himself with his long hair with a bald spot and others with his long hair along with the hairpiece added into the mix. No one thought badly towards him about it because he had in fact grown long hair and he was not hiding anything.
A few years ago two guys who wore wigs and were totally bald tried to join gaylonghair.com, which requires you be a longhair to join their gallery. User reaction was strong and immediate. Two comments I remember are one about if a cop pulls a longhair over, he can't stuff the rug under the seat. Another was that when you went for a job interview, your hair went along too. You have to face the world as a longhair, and that is something that all longhairs share. There is no closet for longhairs, and that, plus the ordeal of having grown out one's hair, is what we all share.
It should be said, too, that although you can fake long hair on the Internet, any longhair in real life can tell. We had one guy here in town always wearing extensions and everyone knew it (and talked about it, too). When he finally "confessed" without any prompting, it was to tell everyone something that, unknown to him, they all already knew.
My hair reached terminal length at 20 inches and my beard reached it at 10. If I wore fake hair and beard, don't you think everyone would know? And don't you think they all would laugh at me behind my back? Sure, it would be cool to have both my mane and beard draggin' the floor, but it would not be ME. It would be fake.
That said, if having fake hair turns ya on, hey, go for it! Just be aware that lots of people, as revealed by responses here, do not look favorably on "fake". Hair is not clothing, it is part of the body, and people look at slipping into clothing very differently than they look as slipping into hair.
Bill
I guess when my hair reaches terminal length I will have a different opinion. I don't know as I hope I am at least 5 years from that point. We are talking about hair. Not a fake battle wound for a medal when so many are losing limbs and life. Not a fake degree for a better job versus someone who earned the right to that job with a real degree. Not a fake medical license or attorneys license for someone who will operate on sick people or defend the innocent without the proper education. It's just hair. Yes it is someone elses but if he is happy and it looks good or not, who really cares? Congratulations to those who grow thier own and congratulations to those who tried and either it was too thin or terminal was too short for your likes and you did something about it to be HAPPY!!!!
<< Representing them as real is right up there with saying you got war medals when you didn't, that you got a college degree when you didn't, that you got a state license to practice a profession but you didn't, etc. >>
Oh puhleeze, give me a break. It's only HAIR, not war medals or an M.D. degree.
<< We grow our membership cards, and you have not grown yours. >>
Membership card my hind quarters. Is it possible that you take hair just a little TOO SERIOUSLY?
My terminal length is barely to the bottoms of my shoulder blades. I tried extensions back in the '80s. They used synthetic hair and the texture was just awful. They were gone in very short order.
Would you be as intolerant, uncharitable and judgemental if you learned that a person lost all of his hair due to chemotherapy? I've known people to whom this has happened. To me it reeks of hypocrisy for you to expect others not to judge you because of the length of your hair and beard, yet you light into someone for his extensions. There is a saying "Judge not lest ye be judged." If the O.P. is happy with his extensions then who are you to judge?
Ah, the very tired "it's only hair" line. Well, it is FAKE hair. It's as silly as gluing on a fake mustache.
I see just about all of the pro-extension posts in this thread come from names that only have posts in this one thread, have no e-mail addresses entered, and have no photos that show the face. Fake is fake.
I will not waste my time further on trolls.
Bill
THANK YOU. It seems like an army of trolls banded together to lay seige to the board.
Real longhairs> Fake longhairs, end of story

One Nice thing about growing your own hair is it's FREE!!
Kevin
Sounds like one is intolerant of people who have differing opinions.
Kevin
For people who are "discriminated" against evey(other)day we sure know how to lay on the hate...I highly doubt Tobi posted that picture with any ill or misleading intent.
I think maybe we could all learn a lesson from watching Bambi again...
To all the who posted remarks against extensions, just a couple of comments..
First I've grown my hair for 8 years to get it to this length so don't talk to me about commitment. Second, I decided I didn't want my hair to look like crap, (like most of the guys on this board, with a few great exceptions)
To those guys I say, get at trim, buy somem conditioner and manage your gift. There are obviously a minimum of two camps here. People who grow long hair as a 'stick it to the man, I'm going to do my own thing'. To those I say, I'm happy for you, go dig your ditches, drive your trucks and play in your bands. Grow your hair hope your happy.
To those of us who actually want great looking hair, (my reason) then join right in.
I'm a long haired consultant working in Fortune 500, (sticking it to the man in my own way, I get to tell CEO's what to do and they hate it coming from a long hair). I bill out $8,000 a day so a grand a quarter is no big deal.
Have a great hair day everyone!
In many ways I agree with you, I was surprised at how aggressive some of the responses were to your post and was frankly disappointed in them.
I commend you (as if that carries much weight) for trying so hard to grow your natural hair out, and also for finding a way to have great long hair despite genetics.
However...I doubt that fighting fire with fire is the right idea. Responding to individual people's opinions by insulting an entire board full of people is...well...narrow-minded, granted I don't blame you for getting hot under the collar. BREATHE PEOPLE BREATHE!!!! =P
Also, why stereotype? For crying out loud, I have hair down to my a$$ and I've never played in a band OR ridden a motorcycle...I really don't think a hyper board is the best place to boost your self esteem by flaunting your paycheck. But considering the responses to you wasting your money on something that obviously makes you happy, I see your point..my question is...why did you even bother?
Keep it "growing!" ^.^ It looks great.
<3
Tristram
Clearly, in that you grew your hair for 8 years, you paid your dues, so that makes me think those who have said you jumped the gun may be in error, and frankly a lot of those who have responded have lost a lot of respectability in my eyes, we are here to support, not deprecate.
I think we can all understand the comment of not wanting crappy looking hair, but the truth is, everyone here wants their hair to look nice; NO ONE wants crappy hair. While some may grow their hair out to stick it to the man they still want good looking hair.
As far as the money issue, its really a non-issue, and frankly no-one should tell anyone else what to do with their money.. but at the same time, telling how much money you have is nothing if not horribly tacky.
Looks like someone's letting their money do the talking here. That's great that you can dispose of your income while a majority of us work hard each and every day just to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads especially with such a failing economy.
Enjoy your fake hair.
