Sometimes we take photos while holding our cameras sideways, and of course then the photo comes out with its top on the side of the picture.
Today we have added an option to upend any such photos when you upload them. Right below where you select the photo to upload, you will find an option to rotate your photo to the left (CCW) or right (CW) 90 degrees.
This, of course, will only work on photos which you upload to the MLHH site. Photos that you link are located on other sites, and we cannot alter those.

very cool, I'll be sure to put it to the test sometime
Thanks!
...and enjoy!
Bill
I just noticed you had been tinlering again.....good idea.
Kevin
I just put it on my partner's site, and I figured MLHH might as well get it, too!
This should be especially good for the guys with really long hair, since they often have to rotate the camera to get all their manes in.
Bill
OKAY guys. Just giving myself an "in days of olde" (and now colourized) the 1st rotation test. And can you believe, all those years ago my hair was cut to this short length because I "thought" I had to look presentable for an up-coming recital in NY City! LOL
Hey Justin I think I've seen this guy before. Is he not the next American Idol????
...Mark, Your recent California pictures were very cool! Looks like you had a fantastic trip. I havent been as timely as I would like lately and your post is so far down the page now, I thought I could jump in here and say, Hey thanks for sharing your journey!
Bruce
Hi Bruce and thanks for your belated comments:)Yes that vacation was great but way too short as I would have liked to spend at least a second week out west. Its my pleasure to post those pics and I'm glad you enjoyed looking at them.Take care my friend and hope to see you around here more often.
Mark
...Gman! Your hair is looking wonderful. I haven't been as responsive to posts as I would like to be lately, and I missed the opportunity to reply timely to your recent update and re-entry. Good to hear from you!
Bruce
You could tell early on that this guy was going to be a longhair!
Bruce
You should also have the option to rotate your photos 180 degrees, in case your photos happen to be upside down when you wish to upload it.

We could also let it flip guys who took their photos in mirrors, rotate photos slightly if they tilted their cameras a little, let them adjust brightness and contrast, etc. Having all those options would confuse more users than it would help. One of our principles in site design is to keep it as simple as possible while still helping with common problems. Failure to rotate a photo is the worst-looking problem that users have, and 99% of their rotate problems are 90 degrees in one direction or the other. We can solve those problems with a simple choice of three buttons. Using the buttons gets rid of difficulties that would be experienced by those who forgot how many degrees a right angle is, or who accidentally put in the wrong number, such as "9".
As for offering 180 degree rotation, if the guy who took your picture held your camera upside down, he was probably so stoned that he didn't aim it at you, and if you are not in the picture, we can't correct that! [grin] Seriously, we never see that problem; as I said almost all of users' problems have been photos taken with the camera held sideways, because there is a reason for that - to get a photo of something taller than it is wide. Since some people will tilt their camera to the right and some will tilt it to the left when doing this, we offer both options.
Bill
Great work Bill, I'm sure this will come in handy.
Thanks! Some users don't know how to use photo manipulation software or don't want to break it out just to post one photo. This should help!
Bill
Hi Bill,
Great enhancement and it certainly save time on using software to change the orientation of pictures as sometimes I take long shots of people and events.
Well done.
Cheers,
John.B
Thanks, John! Now maybe we'll see more of your great photography, which specializes in longhairs!
Aspect ratios of photos can be awkward for those of us with a lot of hair. Most of us consider our hair to be part of our heads, and most photos such as driver's license and passport photos are either square or slightly taller than they are high, to fit the head shape of most people. This means that our faces will be really tiny in such photos, or part of our heads will be cut off. I've learned when such photos are taken to step back about one foot from the painted line on the floor so most of my head ends up in the photo. That seems to produce a good compromise between wanting to get my face in the photo and yet getting enough of the outline of my head in it that it still looks like me.
We had to confront this issue when setting up the avatars here on MLHH. We went for "square" because longer photos would push the message text down, forcing users to scroll more to read messages. Also considered was that most avatar photo submissions come in wider than tall, and cropping a square out of such a photo is more doable than cropping a tall rectangle out. The intent of the avatars is not to show hair so much as it is to establish identity, so we figured a square would work, along with having a click on the avatar show more for those who want to see it.
Bill
For sure Bill great idea and we'll have to go through the permission thing as you know how touchy some people can be about that!
Cheers,
John.B
This might happen.
