Last night I trimmed my hair for the first time in 43 months (when I had my hair buzzed!) I'm (finally) moving to Iceland on July 4th, so I'm posting my last update from the states.
Back post-trim
Back pre-trim
Not much of an improvement! I was just tired of the tangling, and I didn't need to off much more than an inch :)
Here are some comparison shots from the time I first joined MLHH to today
This is the photo of my first post here, September 2006
Midway between then and today (I think June 2007)
It's a very small update, but I haven't been too enthusiastic about my hair since losing over half of my tail circumference in the last 18 months. I'll post a bigger and better update in 6 months - maybe there will be an amazing improvement in Iceland's water quality!
(The first photo is of me and my uilleann pipes - posted only to get the [PIC] header on the OP :D)
Hi Gylfi
As far as I can tell your hair in the post trim pic looks fantastic. My hair is straight like yours even though blonde and my tail circumference is not all that large either.I think due to my hair being fine is the main reason but I do enjoy the waist length. Please don't be discouraged as I think you have great hair and unfortunately some tangling just comes with the territory.Anyway I hope all goes well with you in Iceland as thats quite a big move to make.I'm sure you have your reasons for leaving the US but I wish you the best for sure:)Be safe my friend and do post again when you can as its great to see you participate here.
Mark
Thanks for the comment, Mark! You do have great hair - thing as your tail may be. I don't mind my thinner hair at all. I find it easier to manage and I can wear it down a lot more often :) But because I've once had the thick hair, I have something to miss! The only reason I'm moving to Iceland is for university.
Really Cool update Gylfi in spite of your loosing circumference it looks stunning and none the less inspirational. I wish you well on your move to Iceland a beautiful place to be sure.
Take care
Kevin
Thank you, Kevin! It's growing back though, hopefully it'll be thick to the shoulders when I make that update in 6 months :)
Great update! I hope you figure out why your hair is losing thickness soon, but rest assured that it still looks fantastic.
I hope you enjoy Iceland...and it had BETTER be cooler than Minnesota summers. ;-)
Mouse
I think I solved the losing thickness problem. Unfortunately, I've got nearly 4 years to catch up on!
and hey, I don't even find the summers in Arizona as bad as the summers in Minneapolis. I'm so excited to finally be moving to a place where I'll NEED to wear a sweater in July! On a completely unrelated note...remember a while ago when you posted an update with a chainmail hauberk and I sent an email wondering how you'd made it? I'm nearly done with my first hauberk now! It took me a while because I decided to go with the 45-degree-seams and I was discouraged after breaking my first dremel.
Cool! I've always wrapped the wire by hand, so I've never broken a dremel, but I'm sure it's faster with something moterized. If you get the chance, post a picture when you finish!
Mouse
I was wrapping by hand at first. Then I started talking to a guy who makes riveted maille and I decided it wouldn't be too un-authentic of me to use a power drill. I will post a photo when it's done :)
What sort of wire did you end up using? I used 14 guage galvanized fencing wire from Fleet Farm.
Mouse
I'm using the same, but from Home Depot rather than Fleet Farm! I'm going to line the hems/neck with brass when I get more done though.
Sweet! I'd like to edge mine in copper or brass someday. I'd also like to make another one with aluminum wire (bright, not the stuff that leaves black residue all over the place). While I like the feel of the "real" mail, it would be nice to have a lighter piece sometimes. I'd also like to do an inlay pattern of some kind...too many projects!
Mouse
Good to see your post as is seems we have not heard from you in a while. Your hair look great and it is interesting that you bring up the topic of diminishing circumference. Perhaps some of the longtimers will share their experience with this....I am sure it is a natural occurrence for most.
The best of luck to you in your move....that has to be exciting. Iceland has always been on my travel wish list. I will be looking forward to your first post from your new home.
Take Care
Walter
I've been a tourist in Iceland several times! If you're ever looking for an itinerary of things to do in Iceland, I've got a very extensive list :) I haven't posted around here much lately, but I'm always lurking. Thank you for the comment.
oh also, there's no bagpipe that's native to Reykjavik. However, I found out that there is a bagpipe native to Sweden (up in Dalarna) a couple of months ago and ordered my first sackpipa (Swedish pipe!) from a guy named Leif Erikson :D
Pun intended !! That would be THE Leif Erikson???
"...ordered my first sackpipa (Swedish pipe!) from a guy named Leif Erikson..."
Great update Gylfi, your trim turned out well. Good luck with your impending move, Iceland should be fantastic!
Bruce
Yes, it SHOULD be..I'm trying to imagine any circumstance where it wouldn't be and I'm drawing blanks ;)
Thank you very much for the comment, Scooper. About time that you made an update too, isn't it? :
Yes, you're right! Next month marks 2 years since I stopped lurking and became a member of MLHH. That would be an appropriate time I guess. (Plus I'll be on vacation)
Bruce
Wow, I only know one person personally who plays the uileann pipes and I live in Ireland! Definitely one of the coolest instruments!
Oh and great hair!
That's very strange! I know several pipers just in the city I live. We have a big group of uilleann pipers here, and there are so many great sessions. And even still, it pales in comparison to the sessions that I attend when I'm in New York City. At least you're familiar with uilleann pipes..they're so much fun.
Cool photos, I definitely think your hair is superb. I'm not sure if I'll be able to grow my hair quite as long as yours, as mine is a great deal curlier, but I'd certainly like to try. Have a good one!
Peace,
Ryan
I don't think I'm even near my terminal length yet as I'm still getting 8-9 inches a year. I'm 6'6", so the length takes a bit longer to show up, but using the LHC-method of measuring (front of hairline to hemline) I'm at 37" post-trim. My hair was curly when it was short too, so in time I think you'll make it to where I am. Or at least very close :)
dude that is awesome! so long and bada** looking brother congrads cant wait to get there myself!
Thanks for the comment! I've noticed your hair grows a bit quicker than average too, so it should only be a couple more years for you :)
Great post, very inspirational. Did you immigrate to Iceland? Might not be a bad idea. Keep it growing bro.
I'm going to Iceland for university, but I'm not opposed to the idea of immigrating there. I'm doing a double major in Scandinavian Languages and International Relations, so it's more likely that I'll work for U.S. foreign services than actually becoming a citizen. But it's still a dream :)
Hi Gylfi,
As always, you post the most awesome updates, and your super speedy growth is an inspiration to everyone.
I will certainly be looking forward to your photos from Ireland, and it has a rugged beauty like no other location on the planet. Best of luck with a successful move!
Keep it growing,
David
Thanks for the comment, David! I noticed you said 'Ireland' rather than 'Iceland'..funny how they're only one character off and that's about the only discernible difference between the two islands :D
Hi Gylfi,
Actuatlly, I DID mean Iceland, lol! I have always been prone to typos whenever I type, hunt and peck single finger typist that I am!
David
Fantastic, - very cool.
Cheers Dave
Thanks for the comment, Dave!
Hi Gylfi,
Good to hear from you again and thanks for posting an updateand you hair has come on leaps and bounds in 43 months and looking in good condition. That's a great shot of you with the uilleann pipes.
I hope the move to Iceland goes well (you make me very jealous) and the the purer waters over there do wonders with the hair.
Drop is a line when you get to Iceland and let makes all green with envy!
Cheers,
John.B
Fortunately, living in Iceland won't have any impact on the time I allocate to the internet, so I'll still be around here :) Thanks for the comment!
Hey your hair looks great! And I certainly wish oyu the best of luck on your move. Take care and be safe!
Thank you for the comment and the well-wishes - the same goes to you!
I don't think I've seen an update of you before (I'm not here for a long time) but you've got nice lenght! Good luck in Iceland.
I seldom post updates, but I have seen your update :) You're coming along nicely too, and your hair reminds me of my own when it was shorter. Thanks for the comment, and good luck!
Hey Gylfi-
Absolutely fabulous long hair, and to think.......43 months worth of non-stop growth. Magnificent! About your trim: At this point in time I feel that you have done yourself a favor verses those who post trim results after only several inches worth of growth. The ends in your case were no doubt worn-down very fine and wispy and set you up for many tangles and knots. Now that the ends are once again thick don't be at all surprised that the hair will thicken in dia. where the Ponyband goes in 5 months by quite a bit. All the best to you in your move.
Justin~
Yes, I thought I held out on the trim for a very long time. I can't understand why anyone would want constant trims..but then again, I'm partial to the natural V-hemline and don't like blunt cuts either! I'm also lucky enough that I can hold the splits at bay for quite a while.
Great looking hair, Gylfi. The trim looks nice and did your hair well. 43 months is a big accomplishment! Keep it growing.
Skal,
Hegg
Thank you for the comment, Hegg! Your hair is coming along very well too, from what I've seen in your most recent updates.
Hi Gylfi
Since you have been growing out your hair for three and a half years, you hair is probably getting close to terminal length. Your hair looks great anyway, and I like it.
By the way, I study the weather, and there is almost 24 hours of daylight in Iceland during June, and minimal daylight in December, so be ready for the wierd daylight hours. The bright side about Iceland is that winters there are actually quite mild for a place of high latitude.
Regardless
My MySpace
Well, there is a formula posted around the LHC that's used to estimate a terminal length. It has to do with the amount of hair strands on your hair, and the amount that you shed every day. I've got a few years to go (I shed only 35 strands a day right now.) and when I first applied the formula, I got a 60" result - so I estimate another 23 inches to go until I hit terminal. But I plan to keep trimming once it hits thigh length because I don't want to wear it up all of the time.
I'm used to the weather in Iceland, and I'm well acquainted with the odd daylight hours. It's not quite above the arctic circle, so there's still dusk in July. I spent almost the entirely of last summer in northern Norway and Svalbard, so I've had to deal with the bright midnight sun :D
Great to hear that you're finally achieving your goal of going to Iceland! You've got awesome length, Gylfi. Best of luck on your journeys ahead. You have quite the future ahead of you, I think. =)
-James
Thanks for the comment, James! Seems you've been having an active life with all of the travels and studies too, huh? The future-ahead thing certainly applies to you too :)
Gylfi, Your hair looks fantastic!
Have fun piping in Iceland!
peace, jonalbear
Thanks for the reply, jonalbear! I'll try and have fun piping in Iceland, I'm still not sure what the living dynamic will be like though. Pipes are loud..
Hej Gylfi,
Your hair looks great and even though you say that you lost some circumference of the ponytail, I can't see where the overall look has been diminished in the least. I am so excited, and sure that you are too, that you are going to be in Island for a while. I imagine you will love it. I don't know any Islansk hardly at all, but it has such an intriguing sound to hear it spoken. I got the copy of the Beowulf movie that starred Gerard Butler (not the Angelina Jolie one, although it was OK too) and other Icelandic actors, and part of the DVD extras was interviews with some of the actors in Icelandic. I have heard that the language is very similar to Old English which for me is very interesting. I hope you enjoy your stay there. It's such a wild and beautiful place from what I've seen.
Keep in touch with us and I will look forward to all the pictures I hope you post of the country.
Matt B.
Hei Bragi! I haven't seen either Beowulf movie, but it is very intriguing to hear it spoken regardless. I used to listen to Icelandic podcasts and streaming video for hours and hours when I could hardly understand it :) I don't recognize any strong semblance that it has to Old English, but it does make use of the Eð and Þorn! Same goes for Elfdalian and Faroese, but I can't really understand either even with my Icelandic proficiency :(
There are some nice resources online for learning a little about basic Icelandic, namely http://icelandic.hi.is/ which is a small course compiled by some students and professors at the university of Iceland.
Hello Gylfi !
Congratulation for the trim. May the thickness come back ! I hope.
So cool that you play Uillean Pipe. I will probably begin to learn to play bagpipe myself in the next weeks.
Good visit in Iceland.
Vivien
They're very fun! I know so many pipers who live in France :) One plays in a bunch of medieval groups in Britanny, and he's got a colossal collection of gaitas, cimpois, smallpipes, etc. Good luck picking up the pipes!
Your hair looks awesome, dude. Good job! :D
