Hey all. This is my first time posting pictures of my hair, and talking about it to hair people.
Pictures:
1. Dry and combed after being washed
2.The ends
3. One of the backcombing incidents (my hair is a massive, poofy mat)
4. Combed after a braid
My hair is 27 inches long, is fine, tangles easily, and is oily or combination (I can't tell whether the lower half is dry because it feels rough from split ends and breakage), but either way it's stringy. I used to wear my hair loose constantly, and get about two 3-inch trims a year. Now I wear my hair in two braids out of necessity, held together by a single elastic hair band. I fingercomb 1-2 two times a day. I backcombed my hair 3-5 times last year (the horror) and so probably retain the damage from that, along with a bunch of others, mostly environmental (you know, high winds, dirt, sap, sticks, leaves, pine needles, burs, and snow that would tangle or get tangled in my hair, and then would get ripped out with a brush)---but I never used blow driers, curling/flat irons, hair dyes, or had a perm, though. Would leaving the splits/breakage alone result in more damage in the end, by causing tangles and stuff?
So, how does my hair look? (Of course, all the pictures except #3 are when my hair is looking "nice," instead of really messy.) I can't tell if it's wavy or straight---when my hair was shoulder length it was straight, no wave at all (the only sign of waviness until now was from a picture 12 years ago when my hair was 1-2 inches long). Also, I have a couple strands in the back that have spiral curls at the last four inches. I don't comb my hair until it's dry after a washing---could that have anything to do with it?

Going through it with a wide-tooth comb when its wet is a good idea. You don't want your drying with tangles in it! And afterwards, brushing it out about 50 strokes is what I do (I have fine hair also). As for your curls, that's not something you can help unless you straighten :P.
Whoa, quick reply---thanks for the advice. I'm still unsure of using BBBs though. Is that what you use?
For the combing thing, I plan on experimenting when my hair is soaked and slippery---I'm still getting used to the being gentle thing, and I'm wary about handling my hair in it's weakened state.
I'm not sure what a BBB is, but what I mentioned above is what I use :P.
I meant Boar Bristle Brush (sorry about that). For some reason I thought you used one.
Oh yes I do! It acts more like a "buffer", so you'll need a regular brush too.
Hey your hair looks great! Very well kept and pretty cool. Hope all is good and welcome.
Just a quick note. I am guessing my hair is about as long as yours. I wash mine every other day, I comb it wet and either let it dry or put it in a tail. Either way it gets wavy. I think for me combing it wet with some leave in conditioner I usually have no problems. I also found these nice bands that are wider then the small black ones and they have a very small rubbber strip in them that only touch a part of your hair when in. They hold my tail well and don't come out and also don't pull any hair when I take them out.. I also hand comb a couple time a day too when it is loose. I think your doing well there. Later
Thanks for the tips---I've been thinking about replacing my hair band, and needed some ideas.
Hi Brown,
Thank you for sharing these photos of your hair. It is shiny and healthy, with the most beautiful colour. Be sure to keep it growing, and once again, welcome to our community.
All the best,
David
Thanks! I was under the impression my hair was really damaged (like I said though, the pictures make my hair look good---maybe too good. Or I'm just paranoid ;P
Yeah, you are being paranoid, you have most excellent hair!

Your hair looks great to me, so I'm not sure what you're fretting about :)
Personally I've not had any trims since I started growing about...2 years ago I think now, and any split ends I may have (I never looked for them) don't seem to be causing any more tangles than they ever did before. I think these problems are only as bad as we imagine them to be :P
As for combing advice, I finger comb after washing my hair, followed by using a regular comb. Nothing special but it seems to do the job.
Good luck!
Thanks---I'm still in the trial phase, just trying to figure out what works. I hope I'm doing something wrong in the midst of my newbie-ness, and that it's not my hair causing the problems. I know I'm not imagining them---hard to deny 'em when I can't move my hair without something getting tangled :P
Hi Brown
Interesting handle btw maybe because your hair is that colour??Anyway from what I can tell, especially from pic #1,I'd say your hair is in excellent condition and the length is great.I'd just leave it be and just do the typical wash and condition and you should be fine.Just avoid doing any radical things to your hair and everyone will be happy:)Take care
Mark
The handle just sort of hit me---I was trying to think of one, and I wear brown all the time, have brown hair, and brown eyes: so it fits.
Hey Brown,
You hair looks amazing in the first photo, I wish mine was like that hah. Quick question, what do you mean by backcombing? Do you mean that you comb it straight back then you get out of the shower rather than haveing a part? Anyway your hair looks great!!!
-Phil
Backcombing is when one takes a lock of hair, pulls it taut, and combs the hair upwards toward the scalp to make it knot and tangle. It's one of the steps of a method for making dreadlocks. It's extremely damaging from what I've heard, but I seem to have lucked out.
O MAN! that sounds painful!!! and I'm sure its quite damaging. Good to hear that you havnt had any such problems tho. Thanks for answering!
-Phil
Your hair looks reaonably good in spite of the torture it's been though. Again welcome and good luck.
Kevin
Thanks.
Your hair looks in good condition, so I don't think you've got anything to worry about.
Thank you.
Hair looks great! I might recommend a dentist though!
Thank you (I tried to think up a retort, but failed :P
Great looking long hair. Bravo!
And ever so unique Monkey Mouth. LOL
Welcome! :-)
Thank you---I'm quite proud of it :P
Thanks to everyone for the compliments. I'm finding it hard to believe my hair is as good as it seems, though. That's because of the tangles. When I comb it out, once I'm done if I bring it all over one shoulder, it's already tangled. When I bend over like for the Boar Bristle Brushing method, it's gets really tangled, like I never combed. I can't do anything with it before it gets tangled. Is this normal, and is there anything I can do to improve the situation?
Try a vinegar rinse. Mix up a couple tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (or regular, if you prefer) in a quart-sized squirt bottle. Then, after shampooing/conditioning, just before getting out of the shower, rinse your hair with it. Then rinse lightly with water to remove the vinegar. The acidity helps the scales on your hair to lay down making your hair less frizzy and less prone to tangles. If you have municipal water or a well with hard water, it may be slightly alkaline, which has the opposite effect. As an added bonus the vinegar removes and smells you've been around (smoke, exhaust, etc.).
Joshua
Thanks, I'll have to try that.
Good to hear form you and the update and your hair looks in pretty good condition to me. Keep it growing.
Cheers,
John.B
Looks great Brown! Maybe a little leave-in conditioer would help with the tangles.
Welcome,btw
Bruce
Looks like I need to take a trip to the health food store, then. I hope I can find something to test. Thanks for the tip.
