Hey, this is my first time posting on the board. I'm 17, and I've decided to grow it.
I used to go to the hairdressers get it shaved at the back and sides with a 5 or 6 shaver and get it cut very short on top, so that I could spike it up.
I last got it cut back in October I think, and the fringe is currently just above my eyebrows. The back and sides are maybe 1 and a half-inches long.
I was just wondering if anyone had any good tips for me, and could recommend in any good products that I can buy in UK shops. I just need some adviced that won't cost me (i.e. from a stylist).
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Ross.
Good for you!
I think long hair looks great on men. :)
I'd suggest checking out Bill Choisser's "On Being a Longhair". It's got some great advice about growing and taking care of long hair. This board is also a great place for advice and encouragement.
I don't know specifics about what is available in the UK, but there are some general things to keep in mind with hair products. Don't use any products that contain alchohol(like certain gels, etc). Alchohol dries out the hair shaft and can be pretty damaging. Use a very mild shampoo (as your hair gets longer, you'll probably find that you don't need to shampoo nearly as often) and find a good conditioner. Use a wide tooth comb, and always be careful taking out tangles, don't rip through them. Let your hair air-dry, and be extra-careful with it when it's wet because that's when it's weakest. Heat isn't good for hair, so don't use blow dryers(curling irons and straightening irons and the like are damaging too)and don't wash with super-hot water. Once your hair gets long enough, you'll probably want/need to tie it back sometimes, but be careful what kind of ponytail holders you use; don't use the ones with metal peices and never use rubber bands - both pull out hair.
good luck, keep it growing :)
ps - very important: always remember the "2 week rule" - now that you've decided to grow your hair long, if you ever (for whatever reason) start to consider cutting your hair, give yourself no less than two weeks to think about it. Don't be hasty when it comes to haircuts.
