Hello everybody,
My name's Jeff (aka "Redleader"). I used to be a regular poster here between 2003-2005, but I haven't been around nearly as much since. I have been growing my hair since 2003, and though I've varied it in its length between chin-length and mid back (ringlet-curly, not pulled straight) over the past 5 years. I hope that some of the regulars remember me!
In any case, next month I am going to be traveling to Singapore, and I am definately concerned about the whole Singapore long hair myths. After a small amount of research, I've gotten conflicting results. Some people say that it's an outdated myth, whereas others assure me that I would face a haircut at customs. I cannot seem to find any official rules posted on the net. Point is, this is an important trip for me and there's no backing out, and if I have to get a haircut, than it will be what it must be. I can always enjoy the regrowth procss again. I'd just like to have it done by someone other than a customs official...
So does anybody know for sure about the Singapore laws concerning foreigners?
Thanks for any help and I am glad to see so much great hair around here!
-Jeff
Hi Redleader
I read some of the answers from Yahoo and they said that wearing long hair when going to Singapore is fine with them. Just don't take chewing gum when you go to Singapore. By the way, going to Singapore is not the first destination on my list if I wish to go overseas. My first choice is nearby Thailand.
Regardless
Can you eat chewing gum and men have long hair in Singapore?

Regardless,
Thanks for your reply. I did visit those message boards. However, I have a friend who told me that as recent as two years ago one of her brothers got in trouble at SP customs for dreadlocks. I'm like 85% sure that I'd be fine, but it's all based on personal accounts, I'd love to see like an official government statement....just I'd hate having to experience such a confrontation. I tend to not be a person who likes trouble.
P.S. Am going to Thailand as well! Bangkok, Phuket and Krabi ;)
While I don't know about singapore I do definitly remember you.
You have (had?) some of the most awesome red curly hair. The
ultimate inspiration for somebody with curly hair wanting long
hair!
I think those myths are obsolete, although I wish I could say for certain. Personally I'm far more interested in Hong Kong than Singapore :P
Hi Jeff
While I officially joined the mlhh in 2005 I must have just missed you as I can't quite picture you.If you can post a pic from back then as you know the pic could jog my memory. As for Singapore I've never been there and really have no idea.I would think though that you being a foreign visitor and US citizen they would have no power over how you wear you hair.If you were a citizen there then that might be the case.Let me know when you find out for sure.Take care and welcome back to the mlhh:)

I've been to Singapore three times in the last couple years, on business, and probably will go over again sometime this summer. I have had zero issues with anyone concerning my hair.

Sounds like an embassy/ backpacker question.
Does Lonely Planet have boards?
I have a friend (then a citizen of Brunei)who was arrested for his long hair and given a jail house cut in the 1980s.
Welcome back, Redleader!
It sounds like Singapore is OK now. Just don't go to North Korea!
