Anyone else into folk metal like Eluvitie and stuff like that?
"I close my eyes Inis Mona!" :)
Yes, I'm in several folk metal bands. I've also had the privilege of contributing to the same musical project as a couple of members of Eluveitie (Folkearth)
I also play in normal traditional folk groups / public sessions!
Which bands do you play in and which songs of Folkearth did you contribute to?
Yes, folk metal is one of my favorite metal styles.
I went to the paganfest and saw Eluvitie, Ensiferum and Korpiklaani, great bands.
Other bands I like are, Turisas, Falkenbach, Heidevolk (dutch), Folkearth and a lot more.
I just checked Eluveitie on YouTube, and I gotta say they are AWESOME, so yeah, I'm into them.
Hells yea!
I can't wait til Paganfest @ BBKings in NYC next thursday. Check out Manegarm, Ensiferum, Finntroll, Turisas & if you like Folk/BLACK metal, check out Nokturnal Mortum & Satyricon's first 3 records.

I also just saw them at Paganfest. I like a lot of the Blackened folk metal. Forefather, Pagan Reign, and Skyforger are some of my favorites.
Hi Garth,
I hope you enjoyerd the paganfest and I saw the show in London in the European part of the tour. I'm going to see Skyforer in London tomorrow night, a real treat as they don't play here too often.
Cheers,

IMO that's not singing, otherwise the music is good. There's many bands I've heard whose music I like but once I hear that low-growling type of voice it kills it for me.

I'm listening to Inis Mona as I type this; near as I can tell it's my first exposure to this type of music. I agree with Splat. I can't tell what they're saying most of the time, so the singing/chanting doesn't do anything for me, but I love the instrumentals, using traditional instruments. And I've always been a sucker for bagpipes...
Is the growly vocal an essential part of the genre, or can someone suggest bands that have smoother vocals to the same type of instrumental?
I can't see grindcore vox needing to be there to be Folk-metal. I, too, would like to know of any folk-metal bands without grindcore vox.

It isn't essential, but it seems to be more common. I don't like growly vocals either, but I've not found many bands with "proper" singing. So if anyone knows any more I'd also be interested!
Thanks for the advice about the bands, I already know Korpiklaani I've seen them live 2 times. Subway to Sally I don't know and I'm definately gonna try.
Last.fm is also a great program I use it quite a while now.
Thanks for mentioning Korpiklaani, Londoner. I now have a new band to get into! I like the stuff I've heard on Youtube. The vox are very close to grindcore style but for some reason they don't bother me. Good stuff! Again, thanks for the links!

I like all kinds of metal music Folk being high on the list.
Lots of great hair in metal these days.

I like most kinds of music, but metal tends to give me a headache when I listen to them, especially for a period of time. I like energetic, danceable songs and slow songs. I do like classic rock, however. I am just not into really hard music.

I've seen a few references to "folk metal" here so I checked it out as I've never heard it or of it before.. I definately love the combination of music styles.. The sound is awesome but I will have to agree with some others here that the voice just doesn't mix with me completely. If there were a Pagenfest around my part of the world I'd be there to check it out though! Southeast Georgia isn't exactly the most cultured part of the world, unfortunately, so I doubt I'll ever get a chance to experience that...

Funny you mention Eluvitie, I found out about them yesterday, I should probably check them out :P
