Ok, I think we've all seen that metal music (in its infinite varieties, lol) is quite popular among many of the members.
Not being a metal fan myself, I'm curious to see who listens to other kinds of music, and who some of your favorite artists are.
For me:
Modern Jazz-
The Rippingtons
Chuck Mangione
Maynard Ferguson
Classic Rock/Pop- (about the best classification I could come up with)
Jimmy Buffett
Huey Lewis
Styx
Queen
Journey
Boston
Kansas
Bob Seger
Chicago
Phil Collins/Genesis
Also listen to some classical. I like stuff with more "oomph" to it, like the 1812 Overture and Ride of the Valkyries, as opposed to say your piano or string pieces. Give me lots of brass and percussion. The 1812 is one of my favorites, if nothing else because it's the only tune I know of with an artillery piece as one of the instruments :::grin:::
Jim

Jim, although I love metal, I alslo love the classic rock / AOR sound too, Journey, Boston, Asia, Night Ranger . . . the list goes on.
I am also really into prog rock, early Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, ELP etc.
My other great love is blues, from Fred McDowell, Big Bill Broonzy through to early Peter Green, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and R.L. Burnside.
I also dig the southern sound of Lynrd Skynrd, Blackfoot, Black Oak Arkansas.
Its all rock based I guess :-)
Cheers Dave
Great topic here, Mr. Frodo!!
As an avid Swing dancer (as well as Salsa, C&W, Tango, and other partner dances), I gravitate mostly towards early R&B, Soul, Rock & Roll Oldies, some modern Jazz as well as older Jazz, Latin, as well as some specific favorite C&W artists.
I like a lot of the groups you mentioned below (I'm a big fan of Huey Lewis, for example). If I was to rattle off some of my all-time favorite artists, I guess I'd have to mention the following that come most quickly to mind (in no special order)...
Big Joe Turner (I can't stay seated when I hear some of his stuff!)
Suzy Boguss (my favorite female C&W vocalist)
Merle Haggard (classic C&W)
Willie Nelson (ditto!!)
The Original Drifters (as well as the better-known Drifters)
Elvis!
k. d. lang
Patsy Kline
Louis Jordan
Louis Prima (AMAZING, as well as wacky!)
George Strait
Dwight Yoakam (sp?)
Linda Ronstadt
Gloria Estefan (especially her Latin CDs)
Eddie Santiago (A Latin artist, mostly Salsa music)
Johnnie Ventura (another Latin artist, --- famous for Merengue music)
El Grupo Niche (Salsa again)
Shania Twain
Connie Francis
Celia Cruz (CLASSIC Latin!!)
Tito Puente (ditto!!)
Frank Sinatra (yes, I'm sorry; but, DO like his music - lol)
Jackie Wilson (AWESOME singer!)
The Brothers Cazimero (not sure spelled correctly; but, Hawaiian)
Ottmar Liebert (classical Spanish guitar & Flamenco music)
OMG, I could go on & on... (LOL)
- Ken in San Francisco
PS - Metal Music is *great* for watching head-banging; but, other than that... I'd have to wear my ear-plugs (lol)!!
Ken, I get a chuckle every time you call me Mr. Frodo! I keep getting this mental picture of Sam Gamgee with your face....
Ahhh, wish I could dance (if nothing else, it would make my wife much happier). I've got two left feet and they're both all thumbs.
Jim
Great list there Ken and I know what you mean about Big Joe Turner and Louis Prima.
Cheers,
John.B
I got dragged up on C&W, so your list brings back quite a few memories.
I got into salsa a few years back, due to a girl I used to work with starting a lunch-time class. Not much to do in the area where the office was, so I thought, "Why not?" Loved it from the start and haven't looked back since.
In my younger days, I did Highland, Scottish country and stepdance, so pretty much anything with a good beat gets the feet tapping.
I never got the hang of jive or ceroc though. I never managed to get comfortable with the rhythms. Maybe I should have worked harder at it.
I like almost all genres of music.
As for popular music, my favorite period is from the twenty year period from the early-60s to early-80s, say rougly 1962-1982. That was truly the golden era of popular music. You had Motown, surfer music, psychedelic rock, folk, soul, glam, metal, new wave, hard rock, punk, old-school rap, soft rock, art/progressive rock, reggae, etc. In additon to that, anyone who was around at that time was exposed to almost everything of significance from the 20the century (big band music, Elvis, ragtime, etc). Music wise, an absolutely magical time to be alive!
One of my friends, who was a DJ at my college's radio station, once said, there's an infinite number of great songs in the world. My Windows Media Player library has over 1000 songs, and I still adding more and more songs to it.
My friend also often like to tell me that you know the song, you just don't know what it's called. The only name that I recognize here is Chuck Mangione. I may or may not know the music of the others.
I like music from all of these. Add to those: .38 Special, The 5th Dimension, AC/DC, Aerosmith, America, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Bad Company, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Cars, Credence Clearwater Revival, Crosby Stills Nash Young, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Doobie Brothers, The Doors, The Eagles, Electirc Light Orchestra, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac (both the Peter Green incarnation and the Nicks/Buckingham incarnation), Foreigner, The Grass Roots, Guns 'N' Roses, Hall & Oates, Heart, The Hollies, Jackson Browne, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Little River Band, The Lovin' Spoonful, The Mamas & The Papas, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, The Monkees, The Moody Blues, Paul McCartney & Wings, Peter Paul & Mary, Pink Floyd, The Pointer Sisters, The Police, The Rascals, Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, Rush, Santana, Seals & Crofts, Simon & Garfunkel, Steely Dan, Steve Miller Band, Three Dog Night, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, U2, Van Halen, Van Morrison, War, The Who, Yes, The Zombies, ZZ Top.
(There are others, but those are the largest parts of my online collection right now.)
I like classical, but I have to be in the "right mood" to listen to it. It works best for me in the context of movie soundtracks. Some of my favorite uses of classical music in films: the Strausses in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Wagner & Orff in Excalibur.
Classical (makes flowers grow and birds sing)
Ragtime (solves all world problems)
Big Band/Swing (makes Ken dance...!)
I don't like metal at all, what I listen to is probably mostly classified as Alternative Rock (Morrissey/The Smiths, Radiohead, U2, Arcade Fire, The Verve), but I also love bands such as the Dresden Dolls, some Punk (Ramones, Stiff Little Fingers, Anti-Flag), more folkier music like Dylan, poppier stuff like KT Tunstall, The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs. So yeah I like a lot of music, if you want to find out more about my taste check out my last.fm
http://www.last.fm/user/Shorty11857/
Chopin, Bach, Saint-saens, Sarasate, Paganini, Vivaldi, Korsakov, Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Sviridov...these guys are the real deal!
And of course the best performers are Heifetz and Horowitz, and Karajan is my favorite conductor.
What about Mussorgsky?
I haven't heard nearly enough of him, but from what I have heard, Modest doesn't go anywhere near my favorites. Just as I'm not a huge fan of Beethoven, except for a couple of pieces.
I like Tull, Zeppelin, Mozart, Bob Marly, Joplin, Hendix, Yardbirds, The Guess Who, The Who and many many more. Ya get the flavor though I think ... maybe?
Now there's a trio you don't often hear of in one breath, LOL!!
Ahh yes ... the magnificent realm of diversity. I love it!!
Some bands I like are:
Blutengel
Terminal Choice
Gothminister
AFI
Blaqk Audio
The Cruxshadows
A Thorn For Every Heart
Suicide Commando
Combichrist
Hawthorne Heights
Cute is What We Aim For
Malice Mizer
Moi Dix Mois
Psycho Le Cemu
My Chemical Romance
The Cure
Deadsy
I think it's quite simple I like a real cross section of music and apart from metal. The two I just can't get into is:
Rap...with a "C"
Country "I shot my dawg" and Western "and beat the good lady"
Cheers,
John.B
I love prog Rock
-Yes
-Genesis
-porcupine tree
-Pink Floyd
-Emerson lake and palmer
-jetro tull
-harmonium
Clasical and jazz is also a gender that I like but not barely anything about.
But my favorite will remain Metal (especially PROG metal)
I do listen a lot of metal, but I listen to pretty much everything from Swedish Techno (Caramell) to pop (pink), to pop-rock (paramore), to goth rock/alternative (evanescence, within temptation, etc). I also listen to a lot of japanese rock and pop and such, but lately I've been listening to a hell load of game music.
I listen to almost all kinds of music, everything from heavy metal to country:)
Though METAL is my favorite music, I do listen to other stuff. Interestingly enough my favorite band ever is the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS!!!! :) Most of my other stuff shakes out like this...
Nirvana
Alice In Chains
Pearl Jam
Puddle Of Mudd
Green Day
CCR
Pink Floyd
Zepplin
Hendrix
Some Country
Star Wars soundtracks
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Doors
NO RAP, POP, JAZZ, R&B, DANCE, TRANCE, TECHNO, YOU GET THE POINT!!!! NOTHING WHERE THE ONLY INSTURMENT IS A BEATBOX AND A TURNTABLE!!!
I like mostly metal, but also punk, hardcore, classical, and classic rock stuff. Stuff like;
The Misfits
Black Flag
Minor Threat
D.R.I.
Wagner
Dvořák
Styx
Boston
Journey
REO Speedwagon
Old time Gospel & classic rock from the 60's and 70's.
Like many who have posted I like a wide variety of music much of it falls into the adult alternative category but not all of it.
I too likr the 1812 Overture, always a fun piece.
Kevin
What about the 2112 Oveture :D
(For those who aren't familiar that's RUSH)
Yeah I like that one too.
I am mostly a '70s progressive rock fan. For those who don't know what that entails, I would say that ELP, Yes, the Enid, PFM, Pink Floyd, Gong and Hawkwind would fall within that despite having widely different styles, and they are all bands that I enjoy. That's just on one side of the Atlantic, and in the states I would put the Doors, Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane in that cetegory. Marillion were also progressive, although they were part of a later revival.
However, back in the day, we used to draw a dividing line between heavy rock and heavy metal, where the latter was mostly a derogatory term for bands that were short on melody and long on guitar arpeggios and drum solos. Somehow what was formerly a derogatory term became a genre.
IMHO most HM I have heard doesn't impress me, because I think that Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin did it all much better, but then I am a self-confessed old fogey. I would consider them to be HR, nit HM, but my definitions are not those of today. OTOH, I like Whitesnake to a certain extent.
I do like a wide variety of other music. I like most types of jazz, including, of course, progressive jazz. Someone mentioned Maynard Ferguson, and I like his music very much. I even saw him perform once. I like the blues too, e.g. Robert Johnson especially (who reputedly sold his soul to the devil!). I'm not a great classical buff, but I like Saint-Saens and Mussorgsky, both of whom other people have mentionned in this thread. ELP led me to Mussorgsky, and I once had a housemate who was heavily into Saint-Saens. I like bluegrass, and also old-time country, although most modern country music does nothing for me, and that's putting it mildly. I also like traditional Irish music, and English folk music.
Of course, I also like other rock music that isn't progressive. For a start, there's the Beatles, and they aren't the only ballad writers that I like. I'm a big fan of the late Jim Croce. There's also the British Blues movement.
And I'm probably forgetting a whole bunch of stuff that I like...
I leave you with the words of the late, great Louis Armstrong "There's only two kinds of music - good and bad".
Wow, it's been far too long, stupid school . . . which is necessary for the education I want. Oh well, good to be back. I myself love almost anything (as long as it's tasteful and musical). I love classic rock (and classic Christian Rock, the stuff that doesn't sound any different [it exists]), a bit of modern rock and I like baroque and opera during crunch times, it seems to calm me. Then fit everything from soundtracks (game, movie, TV shows) to a cappella in between. Yeah, I'm pretty diverse musically.
While I am a huge metal fan (Megadeth is my all time favorite metal band), I have a rather eclectic taste in music...although my real "niche" in music is J-Rock/Gaming music...
Favorite J-Bands:
While my favorite game composers are...
And there are plenty of others, but those are just the ones that stand out. And yes, I do listen to plenty of music other than J-Rock/game music, but those are definitely the things that make up the overwhelming majority of my iPod...my tendency to blast new wave '80s music in the car is a legendary annoyance among my peers...lol...
Hi Tim. It's Regardless again. Did you get my reply from the comment you left me on "7th month update". If you want to see pictures of my hair and you use MySpace yourself (must be 18 years, though), you can check out MySpace. Otherwise, wait for my 18th month update coming in the middle of June. You have missed my 17th month update, since they have recently removed it from the board, unless you want to search the archive. I left a reply for the comment you left me on your 7th month update, which I feel you had not found it yet.

Apart from metal (especially death/progressive/black) I enjoy listening to a lot of classical music (and practice such pieces aswell):
Handel (e.g. his Suites and the Messiah)
Bach (e.g. Die Kunst der Fuge)
Chopin (Cencertos, Etudes, Valses, Fantaisie Impromptu etc.)
Schubert (e.g. Der Tod und das Madchen, Winterreise)
Schuman (e.g. Kinderszenen and Ghost Variations)
Mussorgsky (e.g. Pictures at An Exhibition)
I'm not that much a fan of Mozart and Beethoven, thogh...but I havn't given up them yet, as I enjoy the "Rondo alla turca" and the "Moon Shine Sonata".
I'm always exploring new things in music, I think Impressionism's (Debussy) and Expressionism's (Stravinsky) compositions are also very interesting, but I have to do further researches on that yet, aswell as on Ligeti.
I plan to listen to some more 70s prog-rock, including King Crimson, Genesis, Soft Machine etc.
I also enjoy listening to Jazz at times, but I'm a noob on that, yet.
I also enjoyed Tool (10.000 Days), but some people tend to categorize that as metal.
I'm not into most of Pop, Hip Hop, German "Folk Music" and "Schlager", though. Often it seems to be a criteria if you hear that there's been work behind the compositions.
Regards, Herb2992
P.S.: Thanks, John.B, for your advice on Mussorgsky back then, I have to try other pieces of him, yet. I enjoyed his music very much, although it's been a while.
You didn't get my e-mail a few weeks ago, didn't you?
Sorry, I did a critical mistake above. I meant "folksy music", not traditional folk music. Traditional folk music can be very interesting, I like Greensleeves for example.
You can't compare both genres.
Love all kinds of music! To name but a few here goes.
Folk Rock:
Shawn Phillips, Tim Buckley, Byrds, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Janis Ian, John Martyn, Nick Drake.
Classical:
Stravinsky, Ravel, Debussy, Satie, Shostakovich, Reich, Adams, Glass, Cage, Ives, Stockhausen.
World Music:
Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Kaled, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley,
Jazz:
Coltrane(Alice and John), Mingus, Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Sun Ra, Sonny Rollins,
Classic Rock:
CCR, Hendrix. Allman Bros,(early) Fleetwood Mac, U2, Them, Animals, Yardbirds and all the bluesmen that came before:
John Lee Hooker,Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Lightnin Hopkins, Elmore James
so little time and too many more to mention. But might give you an idea!
peace, jonalbear
I listen to pretty much anything, but I've got a soft spot for Scottsh/Gaelic music.
Some good bands/singers to listen out for are Runrig, Capercaillie, Red Hot Chilli Pipers (note, not Peppers), The Trybe, Wolfstone's earlier stuff, Rachel Walker, Brolum and Dòchas.
Most of those are great for driving to.
Add a bit of classical to the mix, the usual Holst, Mendelssohn, Richard Strauss, not Mozart (way too fussy and frilly) a bit of Wagner and Sibelius too.
I like a good bit of rock too, usually stuff from the late 70s to early 90s, a bit of Queen, Magnum, Scorpions etc, and occasionally Bon Jovi, but not too often.
I'll sometimes listen to pop, but not very often. Dreading this weekend. It's Eurovision and my other half wants to watch it! Time to get the beers in, I think. If I start now, I may be drunk enough to not mind it.
Mostly Avant-Garde/Experimental
Anything that makes you think "thats different" :)
Cheers
