Ok, here's the next in the "Getting to Know Your Fellow Listmembers" series....
What are your hobbies?? What do you do in your spare time to amuse yourself??
Jim
My hobbies are
- Listening to music
- Collecting past weather information online
- Reading books on science and such
- Looking up information online
- Building things with LEGOS
- Going outside to run around
- Playing sports
- Going to the gym
- Writing in my journal
- Trying to make friends
These are the things I do most often during my free time.
My MySpace
YES!!!! LEGOS!!!! ; )
I do many things that occupy my time, heres a few that come to mind.
-Playing music (drums)
-Reading
-Playing billiards
-Surfing the net
-Listening to music (Black Metal, Ambient)
-Hiking in the forest
-Camping in desolate areas (preferably forests/mountains)
The list goes on! And yourself???
Isn't he out on parole soon...lol.
Wasn't he supposed get out on parole in April? lol
Okay, what or who is a Varg????
Varg Vikernes was a Norwegian Black Metal musician in one man band Burzum. He was put in prison in the early 90's for a chain of Church burnings around Norway.
Well, if he was burning down buildings, perhaps he deserved some time in prison???
Not to mention he is a psychotic murderer who took the whole black metal fad too seriously...
Yes, he does I suppose, but his fans miss the essence of Burzum.
I thought everyone knew that.
Well people who don't listen to the music have no idea who he is, or anything.
It means "wolf" in Swedish.
I like quiet pursuits that engage the brain, like reading, doing puzzles (word, math, logic) and playing card games online (anyone here play euchre?).
Today I bought an "assembly required" laundry sorter, and I rediscovered that I like putting things together; maybe I should go into business assembling furniture and toys that people don't want to.
I love to go for a drive, just get in the car and go, but the price of gas has taken that away.
I also do a lot of crayoning, making my own pictures (whether it's art is another discussion) or in coloring books.
(n/t)
First off, I'm a model builder. 1/24 scale Corvettes and Ferraris, but occasionally a MoPar muscle car. I have been throwing in some 1/35 armor lately too. My current project is an Iraq war M2A2 bradley.
I play bass too, and railfanning. For those of you who don't know, that's a train enthusiast who goes out and watches trains, photographs trains and takes video of trains. Check it out at www.youtube.com/vetteracer1986 and I do ALOT of karaoke.
To answer my own question:
I read (A LOT!!!): science fiction, fantasy, history, military/political thrillers, detective novels, alternate history, and more (www.librarything.com/catalog/jsfrodo is just a small sample of my books)
I've also built scale models, but haven't done so for years
I play a large variety of role-playing games, such as AD&D (1st and 2nd Edition), Traveller, Top Secret, Boot Hill, 2300AD and several others.
I collect knives and swords (which fits in with some of my other hobbies, see below) I have pics of some of my blades on myspace.
My major pastimes lately have been in the area of historical reenactment/re-creation, involving the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) and a local group called the Longship Company.
I serve as our Barony's Herald, which means I help others research accurate period names and heraldic devices.
I also take part in fencing, and have twice been our Barony's Rapier Champion, as well as being a warranted Rapier Marshal (basically a referee/safety observer)
I'm starting to learn about leatherworking crafts, both making items from leather, and handtooling items. I've also (under direction) sewn some of my own period clothing.
Recently I have served as a crewmember aboard the Longship Company's 40' reproduction Viking longship, mostly as an oarsmen.
Jim (aka Lord Mathias)
My MySpace
Would you recommend AD&D over the usual D&D 3.5?
I would highly recommend AD&D (1st or 2nd Edition, I play somewhat of a mix between the two) over any of the 3rd Edition and beyond versions put out by Wizards of the Coast. D&D 3+ may be a decent role-playing system, but it's not a style of play that I enjoy.
Now admittedly, I've been playing AD&D since 1978, so I've gotten thoroughly familiar with the way that system works. Yes, it has it's bugs, but I know them all, and have them named. They're pretty much pets by now, LOL.

Cooking and Coffee Roasting....
Anyone who roasts their own coffee is ace in my book:)I'm currently enjoying a cup of java where I purchased the roasted beans from a guy located in Half Moon bay,CA.When out west on my vacation I visited his facility and he showed me all the bags of green beans that he will eventually roast. Its a small operation but the coffee is excellent and organic too.Hmmmmmm guess you could say drinking coffee is a hobby?LOL.I'd love to try your coffee someday.Take care my friend.
Mark
Great photography Walter! Thanks for sharing the link.
Walter, you are excellent photographer my friend!! Lovely pictures, superb composition and colour.
~ Dave
Those are great photos, Walter. They look very professional.
Scott
Some VERY impressive photography work, Walter.
I got a chuckle out of your mention of meteorology. I have worked as a metrologist (calibration specialist), and it's amazing the number of times I've mention that job to people and they insist on adding the extra letters and assume I'm a weatherman.
Jim
Well Jim this could be a very long list as I tend to spread my interests all over the place so my hobbies are actually quite vast.Unfortunately I don't spend enough time on any one in particular with a few exceptions. So this is basically my short list of things I currently at least try to do as often as possible while others I do more often.
No.1 Working out at the gym. This is something I'm very loyal to.
No.2 Mountain Biking.I've been kind of delinquent on this one but hope to do more this summer.
No.3 Going on the internet.Probably spend a little too much time in this dept.LOL.
No.4 Hiking or just walking in general.Just went to NYC yesterday and I think I almost walked half the island of Manhattan!LOL.
No.5 Growing longhair!Well had to throw that in as thats my longest running hobby or should I say interest:)
No.6 Target shooting and firearm collecting.Kind of been more interested in collecting military arms as of late.A mixture of vintage and new models and basically longarms.
No 7 Collecting of denim jeans.Long story.LOL.
No.8 Finally collecting of mechanical wristwatches.I've slowed down on this one as its kind of an expensive hobby and my collection is quite large at the moment.Just don't have enough wrists to wear them all!LOL.
Well I think that covers the major ones as I'm sure a missed a few.Anyway hope you all are having a great weekend.See ya around the board!

Well.....I belong to a secret society so I really can't say anymore.
Kevin
Wink, Wink, nudge, nudge say no more!
But now that you've told us about this secret society, it's not secret anymore....
Or, you've told us about this secret society to cover up the secret society you really belong to....
Or, you just told us that so we'd assume you were joking, and wouldn't ask anymore questions about your secret society....
Or......
Oh, forget it. My head hurts...

I used to play snooker a lot (similar to pool), but don't get much opportunity lately.
I like ice skating too. We have a new rink here now. My daughter is keen on ice skating. We might go tomorrow. I wear my dad's old skates, which are pre-WW2 and have become a bit of a conversation piece.

Wow, Im sure this'll turn out to be a mighty fine list. Here goes:

-Christian Epp
as long as possible. See photo.
Bicycling I do mostly road, but I want to get another mountain bike.
Strength training.
Hiking on trails within easy driving distance from home.
Making small projects using solar cells. I build my own small solar panels with small solar cells cut from larger ones. (I will cut up a large solar cell into 6 or 8 pieces.) I even cut small usable cells from larger broken solar cells.
LED lighting. My computer keyboard is illuminated by 24 white LEDs as I type this. The LEDs run from batteries which are charged by 2 64 watt solar panels.
Designing small and simple electrical devices. I have made several small LED torches, and also an LED bike light. I have also built a small LED outdoor flood light.
Making complex calculators in Excel. I did a loan amortization calculator that shows 200 different comparitive percentage rates at once. I did one to calculate orbital velocity of planets and moons, and another to calculate how fast a car will go based on horsepower.
Meeting fellow longhairs. I really like to meet up with other like minded longhairs too.
Scott
Here is the business end of my 45 pound boa constrictor.

Cool topic, Mr. Frodo. (Is that really your name?)
I've enjoyed reading the responses.
As for me, the following phrase sums me up well:
Jack of all trades, master of none.
I have a few things that I spend most of my free time on, but I also have a lot of things that I dabble in.
So here are my main hobbies, which I spend the most time on:
Photography (film; I have a boat-load of Olympus OM series equipment)
Consumer electronics (TVs, audio, computers; I like to keep up with the current technology)
Music (voice, piano)
Hunting and firearms
Archery
Hiking/walking/bicycling/swimming/tree climbing/being outdoors
Board games (Risk; Monopoly; Clue; Backgammon; Chess, though I'm no good)
Video games (on PC: Battle for Middle Earth, Stronghold, Flyff; on PS2: Final Fantasy X, Lord of the Rings the Third Age)
And here's what I tend to dabble in:
Yoyoing (1A, with a kickside butterfly)
Acoustic Guitar
Origami
Macrame
Legos (When I was younger I played with Legos considerably more, but time constraints have limited that)
Capsela (same as Legos)
Model building
Model rocketry
Rubik's Cube
Horseback riding (this would be under the main hobbies, but I don't own horses right now)
That's about it. There may be a few things I didn't mention, but that gives a good overview.
Joshua
Thanks, Joshua. I've always liked to learn a little about those I've met, even if only online, and this seemed like a way to accomplish that.
And no, that's not my real name. The "JS" is my initials, and the Frodo comes from my interest in Tolkien. Been using it for years as in internet "handle". I've had at least four different email accounts using jsfrodo@[insert_isp_here]
Jim
Me too.
Haha, that sounds just like me and Legolas. I have emails, messenger handles, website usernames, and many other things that contain "legolas" something.
Glad to meet another Tolkien fan. Feel free to email me sometime if you want to "talk Tolkien."
Joshua
I don't know how I managed to forget it, but I love to read. I dare say I spend most of my time doing so. Maybe that's how I forgot to mention it: I do it so often I take it for granted. In any case, a sample of what I have in my personal library follows:
The writings of J.R.R. Tolkien
The writings of George MacDonald
A few of C.S. Lewis' works, including the Chronicles of Narnia
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
The Tarzan Series by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Robinson Crusoe
Treasure Island
Peter Pan
The Neverending Story
The Mushroom Planet series
Hardy Boys
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Tom Clancy's The Hunt for Red October
Herpetology (field research, primarily rattlesnakes and turtles of the Genus Glyptemys)
Photography (reptiles, amphibians and their habitats)
Competitive Chess (tournaments)
Hiking
Guitar
