Hi everyone. I've been examining my shed hairs lately and have found that some of them have a small white bulb-type thing at the ends. I'm not really sure how to explain it but I hope some of you understand what I mean. Is this related to unhealthy/damaged ends and is it a problem?
Also, I was wondering if there was a way to tell if my ends are healthy or not just by looking at them. Does anyone have advice?
Cheers,
Peter
Hi Peter, when a hair sheds it has a bulb on the root end. This is normal. Look at the other end opposite the bulb. Any splits would be at that end.
If your ends feel scratchy and rough they could have damage. If your hair is less than 12 inches long, split ends are not likely to be a problem yet.

The little white ball is where the hair was attached to your ascalp. There is nothing at all unhealthy about it. If you were to grab a single hair and pull it out, the white ball would be there as well. Now, if you start seeing large amounts of hairs without the little ball in your brush or on your hands after messing with your hair, then tht would denote hair breakage.
As far as telling if your ends are hea;thy.....just look at them. Either they will end in a single hair or split in atleast on place, ending in multiple strands....hence the word "split ends". Split ends can (and in my own opinion) should be trimmed just above the split. If I leave mine alone, they tend to split further up the hair shaft.

The white thing at the end of the strand is the bulb. I agree with Absalom that you should look at the other end of the hair. If your hair feels smooth near the end, it is in good condition. If it feels rough or scratchy, then it may be split or damaged.

The last inch or so of my hair feels a bit rough while the rest is very soft and shiny. I think this may have to do with a time I tried to cut a very small amount off the ends myself using a regular pair of scissors. After doing some research, it seems that proper hair shears are very sharp and the scissors I used likely damaged my ends. I won't be trying that again.
I've been oiling my ends with olive oil for the past month or two to keep them as healthy as possible even though I've likely damaged them.
Cheers,
Peter
You should always use special coiffeur scissors, they are worth the price, I just cut my hair with such ones.
Get one and cut one or two inches off, they'll regrow and this time healthy.
