I decided after my last haircut that I wanted to grow my hair long. I've thought about it for years, but just now taking a serious attempt to do it. My hair is wicked short now (no longer than half an inch), and I'm aware and accepting of the time and patience that must be put into growing it long.
My main concern is neatness. While it's growing, is there a way to have it trimmed or cut so that it won't look as messy as if I gave up on haircuts altoghether? If any info would help to give an idea as to how this can be done, I have wavy, thick hair. Thanks a lot.
That is a concern everybody has when beeing a first timer. Back in june I simply decided not to cut my hair again, when I "needed" it after my haircut in May. At first I had a shorter aim than my shoulder blade target I have now. Anyway, I went to salons asking how could I grow out my hair. Most stylists would tell you to go every 6-8 weeks. Do not do it. Your hair will need getting evened out, but not every 2 months, that takes away length and makes the weird looking (awckward) stage longer.
I got to my 8th month last wednesday, without any trim, and the length is nothing to feel sad about. During this stage just trim split ends and even out when you get to the desired length or at least close to it. Do not listen to barberr and/or stylists unless you absolutely trust them, I had a terrible color accident with a very friendly stylist, but don't be misled, they are nice because you pay them. There are some long hair friendly places almost everywhere, just ask in the board to see if anyone knows one in your area.
Finally I give you 5 points that are really important.
- Do not cut your hair, don't allow anyone to trick you into a "maintenance trim" It looks bad for about 6-10 months but it will look great. Every trim you get can make that timeframe 2 months longer.
- Take vitamins for the hair, eat and sleep well. A healthy body grows hair faster, You have many ways to achieve your body's maximum growth rate.
- The 2 week rule. Whenever you get a rush to cut your hair, wait to weeks, if in that time you doubt about the haircut, reset the 2 weeks. It will be a lifesaver in the awckward stage.
- Get support on this board. Its full of people like you, with the same concerns, goals and questions. You'll often find someone with a solution for your problem, based on honesty and expirience.
- Be clear about your reasons for growing long hair. It is basic to survive peer pressure. Grow your hair for yourself, not for others. Some will like it, some won't. Some girls see it as a turn on, some don't like it. Be yourself and don't cut your hair to please others.
Good luck,
If I can help you in any way, just mail me
taking hair vitamins will do little else besides drain your wallet. just find a good multi-vitamin and make sure you have a decent dietary source of protein.
If someone makes fun of your hair, ask them if they are a supermodel. If they aren't, tell tehm to sod off!
Hi.
Well, I'm about 19 weeks without haircut and what I use to control my hair is hair moisturizer which acts like gel but doesn't feel weird as gel does.
I highly recommend that you read Bill's excellent treatise "On Being a Longhair"(linked below). As far as keeping it neat, try gel. I use Dep level 8 it contains no alcohol and gives good results.
