Hey guys i'm 15 right now. I started my first year of highschool in September and it's been pretty hectic. I goto a school where every thinks they're the shit. I don't know if it's like that for every highschool but it's really annoying. I've been growing out my hair for 8 months and have been taking alot of flak about it. People that i've known for awhile are starting to become hostile at me just because of my hair. I can't go to a class without being told to get a haircut. I've never said a bad word about a person and don't understand why people are getting mad at me just because of my hair. I want to keep growing out my hair and plan on doing so but I'm not sure what would happen. I almost feel in danger that i might be harmed because of my hair. I feel outcasted by people who were once my good friends just because of my hair. Everyday i suck it up and endure it. I won't change myself just because someone tells me to. I'm just wondering how did you guys not go crazy while growing out your hair?
Since I was a short-hair when I was in high school, I did not experience that. By the way, I went to a private high school and almost everyone were nice to me. The reason the people at your school think the way they think, is because they are simply unused to men with long hair.
At my middle and high school, I have seen men with shoulder-length hair all the time, and at my high school, there are some men with long hair, going as low as mid-back. And they were never treated that way.
I would like you to keep growing out your hair, and I think you should finish up your year and tough it out for a few more weeks, have a fun, relaxing summer, and find a different, smaller, preferably private high school for your sophomore year. If you must go back to the same school next year, all the mess will eventually slow and stop as you go into higher grades. We, as users of MLHH, are supportive of those who want to grow out their hair.

Hey i'm kind of new to the message board. First off i wanted to say thanks for responding to my thread. I think i might of already posted a response but it's not showing up and i just wanted to make sure you got it. Yeah i'm gonna be going to the same highschool for 4 years. Right now my hair looks like a long german helmet type thing. Is that normal? Once again, thanks for the support.

Whatever you have is most likely normal, at 8 months though, it wont really be that long, no doubt you are in the throes of the awkward stage.
Only guessing, but you might find that when your out of that stage, people will leave you alone.
Some people in highschool want to be cool and always find something to say to you that makes them look cooler. Just grow out your hair and ignore them and eventualy they will stop with anoying you.
When "friends" don't like your hair they are not really your friends, time to hang out with other peope who don't mind the hair.

Hi Kyle,
It seems as you have the right idea and attitude to grow your hair out. Don't bother worrying about what others think. As for "enduring" the awkward phase, I suggest you try the side part/swoop style where you part it to the side. It tends to look both fashionable and neat/messy at the same time. This is what I did while going through the awkward phase of hair growth. Check out the photo of Beck I posted, that's a similar way of side parting. Good luck to you and keep us updated on your progress.

Thanks for the advice! I've been going with that swoop/part style but i've come to realize that the surroundings that i'm in at school are the reason why i get alot of crap about my hair. I goto a higher end public school where everyone is so into themselves that they can't accept things that are different. Well i honestly don't care what these people think anymore. haha sounds corny but the MLHH really makes me feel comfortable with my journey to long hair. Thanks Phil!
I'm just finishing my second year of high school, having grown my hair for about a year, and I have had to deal with people similar to this. There are also some people who have been supportive, though, so I haven't been caused too much grief.:) Also, the friends I've made since growing my hair seem to be better people in general than the friends I lost because of my hair because they are more open-minded and tolerant. Keep an eye out and you will find people to support you. Believe it or not, supportive people are just as abundant as hostile ones, they can just be more difficult to pick out of the crowd.:)
Yeah your right. Hope i meet some cool people next school year. What's weird is that i get alot of shit from my friends who i skate with and i would've thought that they'd be alot more open minded but i guess it's really just the individual. Thanks!
I'm 16, going through my final year of high school. My friends liked my hair and I had all of their support and friendship. Sadly the stupid, image obsessed private school school i attend made me cut it. The first cut was last year and since then i've had to cut it two more times because i cant bear to have a lot cut off.
So I am basically going crazy, but for differnt reasons hahaha.. I cant wait to leave school and never cut it again. you should just ignore comments and find people who dont really care about your hair, like the other people said. Damn i envy people my age who get to grow out their hair!
Yeah i'm grateful that i can grow it out. My moms really cool with it haha. Finish up highschool and groooow it! and post some pics! Thanks for the help
