Hey guys. As the title says ive been browsing this site for a while, and i think what you lot do is great. This site genuinely feels like a community of non-judgemental, yet honest great people.
I'd first like to apologise for being so damn un-photogenic haha! These photographs were taken around a month ago on a holiday. Id like to say that its completely true that water from different countries affects your hair in different ways, the water there just did not agree with my hair! It always made it look greasy and oily.
Ive been growing my hair on and off since i was 13 (im now 17). The reason i decided to grow my hair is because i suffer from a condition/disease called Ushers Syndrome, it affects my eyes and ears and as a result i have to wear hearing-aids. Hence the reason i grew my hair to cover the hearing aids.
Enough of the life story! Thanks for takin the time to read, i will try and stay around this site as much as i can!
(I hope ive done these photos right, apologies if i havent)
This is me and my nan (again apologise for the grease!) She has helped me through alot in my life.

Your hair looks great. And it looks like you have a loving family. That's even better. Glad to have you with us.
Great looking hair. You are fortunate to have such straight hair.

Welcome to the board, Maz. Your hair looks awesome. Are you continuing to grow it, or are you maintaining that length for now? Best of luck... =)

Welcome to this board and it a pleasure to have you show up. Your hair is absolutely of the most magnificent, and no apologies whatsoever needed. Great photos and an inspiration for all of us as one not only growing out their hair, but in the way you have coped with illness.
With all good wishes-
Justin~
Your hair kicks ass! Keep it growin and keep postin!
Thanks alot guys. All of you are a HUGE inspiration as you all have fantastic hair, and i love the fact this place has a whole range of different types of longhair!
Hi Maz,
I would like to welcome you to the hyperboard, and I am delighted that you have joined our community. Your hair is just about perfect, and is straight, shiny, and healthy, and it should be a breeze to grow it super long. I remember that you had expressed earlier concerns about hair loss, and as far as I can tell, you hvae nothing to worry about at all.
Speaking of hearing loss, I am also hard of hearing, and I have been since birth. I wear a pair of hearing aids, which help me to hear better in larger groups like staff meetings.
Keep it growing,
David
Its mainly when i tie my hair back its noiticable, but i figure yesterday, whats the point in worrying about something you have almost no control over. Ill deal with it when it comes.
Its nice to see theres people on hear who also have hearing aids (sorry if that sounds wrong!Im sure you know what i mean though).
Un-photogenic? Hahahaha.
IN any case, welcome to the board!
Your hair really looks great in these pictures although you say it's a little greasy. It's so straight and lays nearly perfectly. I bet you never get tangles. These are great pictures too. Glad you had a good vacation. If you don't mind me asking, where was the picture taken of you guys on the bridge? I'm guessing somewhere in France, but then I could be wrong. It looks like a really cool town with what looks like some sort of fortress wall or abbey or some such on the hill/shoal in the back left of the picture.
Un-photogenic? I don't know how true that is as you look more like one of those guys in a Dolce and Gabbana ad on a photoshoot. I know where you're coming from in regards to covering up the hearing aids. I almost never wear my hearing aids though my hair will cover them up pretty much too. I'm kind of self-conscious about wearing them though that's kind of dumb on my part, and as result probably only put them in about a quarter of the time. But my left ear is pretty much perfect, it's just the right that's not so good at all, so most of the time I'm OK.
Welcome to the site,
MB
Thank you for the compliments. Youre right it is in France, a place called Lourde. Its a highly religous place, i know people who go there that arent religous and its just such an uplifting experiance.
But my left ear is pretty much perfect, it's just the right that's not so good at all, so most of the time I'm OK.
I will go out on a limb here and guess that you may have driven big rigs for a number of years. Right ear hearing loss is common in those who drive big rigs due to engine and transmission noise.
Scott
Hi Scott,
No, I've never driven big rigs except only for short periods. This whole topic really isn't something I go around telling everyone about because it's not a huge deal or a huge impediment, but then it is somewhat as I am rather sensitive about it. In a nutshell -- I had two severe ear infections a good many years ago that seemed to settle in the right ear and did not go away for a while even with treatment, which ultimately damaged the bones (incus, malleus, etc.) of the middle ear. Also, I had a bad accident involving an ATV about eight years ago wherein I had a concussion and severely bruised lower back (which still hurts to this day periodically) and split-open-to-the-bone ankle. Hence, I took pain killers for a time during that time which were (unknown to me) ototoxic. I also have some noise-induced problems from several things like shooting a shotgun right-handed in skeet shooting etc. without ear protection (this was just youthful stupidity on my part). These several things also have led to tinnitus which is a ringing in the ears that even (and really moreso) in total quiet it seems like I have a jet engine roaring in my head. This is not really fixable either, or has not been for me at least and can be a huge annoyance at times.
The good thing is really by concentrating on what someone is saying and paying close attention to a speaker's facial cues and body language that no one would really know I didn't have perfect hearing if I didn't tell them, the which I don't. If I give a response to a statement that doesn't fit the initial premise then I guess they chalk it up to absent-mindedness ;-). In a quiet environment it is easier to hear one voice or noise too. And luckily my left ear is in pretty good shape (a blessing) for talking on the phone, etc. I have found that hearing aids do help sometimes but do not really fix one's hearing, and sometimes they are just worthless in a noisy situation and are better left in their case as you hear everything in a cacophony of sound. That may seem strange, but then a comparable analogy is that whereas some folks will wear glasses all the time and derive great benefits from them, others will be apt to only wear them in certain situations, driving, reading, etc. or pretty much not at all, depending on the person and severity of the problem. Thus, whereas some who might wear glasses only for a minor vision problem, others would just as soon run into a wall as not without their glasses on. Plus, I think there is a large deal of psychology behind either (HA's or glasses) based on the user's perceived perception by others which plays a large part on use or disuse of either. I (perhaps mistakenly) feel that revealing infirmity (perhaps the wrong term and maybe not PC enough) changes another's perception of one negatively resulting in a hidden sense of assumed incapability when that is not the case. This all leads to self-consciousness on the user's behalf and can negatively affect benefits from the said device.

Maz Welcome and it's a pleasure to have you post on the site. we are a pretty honest bunch and yet laid back enough to accept that everyone is different. Of course we'll joke and tease a bit but that's normal in a group of people like ours.
In spite of what you say about your hair it looks great and as Matt said lays perfectly. Some people can wear their hair greassy and it looks great and others like myself and it looks horrible. The pics you posted were very nice and as you can see turned out fine.
We hope you do hang around and post more and will look forward to it.
Cheers
Kevin
Maz, Welcom! You are quite photogenic I would say.
You have nice long brown hair. Cool Hendrix t-shirt too!
peace, jonalbear
Greetings Maz, you have great looking hair and those pics of you and your relatives are delightful. Welcome to the board!
cheers,
Max
I'm glad you decided to post on the board, welcome!
You've got a great head of hair :)
Welcome Maz, your hair looks fantastic. It does not look greasy at all to me. You have the type of hair that will easily grow to waist length. I would guess in your situation you would want to keep it at maybe shoulder blade length, which is about 6" more than your current length, so you can wear it loose. Keeping it loose is a must to hide the hearing aids.
I read up on Usher's Syndrome and it is not pretty at all. Do look into gene therapy to preserve your eyesight. Gene therapy treatments for hereditary disorders will be available in coming years.
Peace
Scott
Thanks alot for the compliments Absalom. Ushers isnt a graet thing to have, there are three 'types', i have type 2 which luckily isnt as bad as the other two. Gene therapy is always progressing, i get regular updates from doctors etc. Hopefully in a few years they will have found a 'cure' to fix it. Though i say cure it wont get rid of the affects that have already happened, it'll just stop it getting worse. They actually tested methods of treatments on lab rats which have been successful, its just identifying each individual gene that takes a while.
p.s your hair is a TRUE inspiration.
Welcome to MLHH! You've provided us with some great photos. You've got great hair and by the looks of it, a great family too.
I look forward to your progress!

Your hair is great. I absolutely love it. I wear hearing-aids too and I am growing my hair out to the my shoulders just as well. I'm 20 now and I started 5 months ago! I can't wait to get it as long as yours. Anyways, great job on the upkeep (the oil actually looks healthy on your hair) and keep on growing. Thanks for the inspiration. :)
Tyler
Your hair looks handsome. I understand that you are growing it out for a reason, but reason or pleasure, I enjoy seeing men with long hair. Keep growing it out. I decided to grow out my hair for pleasure. Don't worry, we are all honest about your hair.

Dude, your hair is AWESOME! You look great with long hair. Welcome to the forum, Maz. Don't even think twice about the hearing aids. For one thing, you have no control over the situation; you didn't ask for the disease, so how can people judge? And for another, I don't think anyone would notice the hearing aids because they'd be too busy looking at your awesome hair! And you are totally photogenic, too. You could be an ad model or something.
Again, welcome, and thanks for the pics.
Keep us updated.
Joshua
Hey there!!
You have great hair and youre not un-photogenic at all!

Nice hair! I wish mine was so perfectly strait. That length looks good on you.
