Hey,
This is an idea I've been playing with for a while. I've been wondering what white or silver dyed hair would look like on me. So here are a few questions since I've never dyed hair.
1) I have dark brown, almost black hair (except at the tips where it's lightish brown because of the sun), so maybe the transition to white would be impossible or very difficult?
2) I've never dyed my hair before, so just how bad would the damage be?
3) it's irreversible, right?
4) is there any way I can get an idea of what it would look like without doing it?
5) do white and silver dyes actually exist? I imagine most people want to do the very opposite, and so I haven't seen any in shops.
Any additional feedback and advice would also help. Btw, here's a pic of Lucius Malfoy.
http://bloghogwarts.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/lucius-malfoy.jpg
Btw, I realise his hair isn't white or silver, but rather a very light blonde, but close enough.
I'm not sure about the actual dyeing process. I think changing from black to white is quite difficult and wouldn't turn out well. However, if you post a picture of you and your hair, I (or someone else) could try to change the colour with Photoshop.
Cheers,
Peter
I don't have any new ones, so I'll take one tomorrow, for now I'm heading off to sleep. Thanks for the suggestion, I've never been good with photoshop myself.
Actually, the process is simple, but time consuming. That is key--if you have time.
1) Dying black hair white or blonde is 'hard' because it takes more than one application of bleach to turn it white. The first time you do it, it will turn orange or yellow--but do NOT be afraid!!! This is normal. Once it is orange/yellow, wait a week and bleach again. If you bleach it twice at the same time, you may lose the length of your hair so beware.
2)It will dry it out, but use after-color conditioner and do not wash with shampoo for a week. Only use conditioner that the bleaching kit provided for you and you and your white hair should be fine.
3) Believe it or not, this is the easiest color (white) to reverse back to normal color. All you need to do is dye it back to the color you want (black) or put other colors. BTW, if you have your hair white--this opens all the doors of colors for your hair as white is the most susceptible and porous to other dyes.
4) Yes, if you go to Sally's or any kind of beauty store, they have a wash-in wash-out colors that you can just try for fun. They even have the cheap spray on colors if you want to be thrifty like on halloween nights.
5) YES! Some people actually love white or silver hair. Silver hair is attained at beauty shops or beauty salons. I'd prefer a salon, but the dyes work just as well. Just be brave and talk to one of the nice ladies at the beauty store and ask for silver or white dye. They will know what you are talking about.
Other infos-- Once you have dyed, please please take good care of your hair. If you do not, you will regret the stake that your hair will fry and die off your head otherwise. Going outside should not be a problem, but if the sun hits your scalp and you start to itch, do NOT itch! This is just the healing on your scalp from the peroxide and chemicals you mixed with your hair--wear a hat. Use products to maintain it and keep it healthy. A good product is Pantene smoth and shine serum (they are glass little vials of oil that you can dispense into your palm and smooth over your hair), daily nourishment leave-in conditioning spray by John Frieda, or use Garnier Fructis smoothing milk.
Sorry if this is a lot to read, but I love providing information on hair. :) Thanks for taking the time.
Thanks a lot Tyler, if I ever go through with this, I'll be using your guide :)
Besides, the more there is to read, the more info there is to absorb :P
Dyeing the hair can be very bad. Especially if it goes wrong. I have used just for men a few times like 15 years ago when I was in retail management. But the stuff in womans dye is stronger and different. And going to bleach blond can make all your hair fall out. It happened to a girl friend of mine in collage. It was a home done job though. I wouldn't recommend it.
Hair falling out? Ouch!
Is this because of she bleached it several times in a row, or as a result of just one bleach?
Dying your hair, to my point of view, can be more harm than good. I would not take chances on your hair if I were you. I am not a fan of dying my hair anyway. You look fine with your natural color.
Regardless
My MySpace
I know my colour is fine now, I'm just interested in looking a bit more...silverish lol
Keep in mind that your hair is going to be decimated.
You bleach it until it's a pale yellow (this can take multiplebleachings) then use a toner to turn it white. Special effects and manic panic both make one, and yes, it's very permanent. I wouldn't recommend it.
I'll think another 20 or so times before doing it, thanks.
Hi derf,
Yes, it's true... You can (and WILL) have picture-perfect white hair! Here's the recipe, test-tried and found to be absolutely true, by Yours Truly!! Just follow these 10 easy steps...
1) Grow your hair long, as is (this step you have already done quite well; but, you can always grow it further)...
2) Look at your natural hair color, carefully noticing it in the mirror;
3) Continue observing your mane and its color over many, many years...
4) Continue following steps #1 - #3 over a long, long time, --- at least another 20 - 30 years...
5) Some morning, when you least expect it, the White Hair Faery (related to the Tooth Fairy) will give you a lovely gift on your head, --- a single silver-white hair!
6) Nurture that white hair: water it, feed it (only organic, all-natural hair food, though)...
7) Magically, in the middle of the night, I think, white hairs begin to multiply, --- and in time, will soon eliminate all of those awful, ugly-looking brunette, black, or blonde hairs...
8) If you change your mind at this point, white hair birth control methods will NOT stop this process, --- only Clairol or L'oreal will!
9) This recipe has been proven faithful by MILLIONS, including such notable cooks as Betty Crocker, Julia Childs, and Grandfather Time!
10) Enjoy!!

Yep!! This worked for me. (or is working)
Actually, in my family hair seems to almost completely fall out before it starts going grey or white. It's a shame really lol.
Your right Ken and I see new ones every day and mine are shiny and sparkle under the light. Good substitute for tinsel on my Christmas tree.
Kevin
Hmmm... at the moment, it's just my beard that's going santa-white. Not that that is a bother for me... it's quite distinguished ;)
When you read about how bad it is to dye hair, you have to keep in mind whether bleaching is required. Going to a darker shade of your natural color doesn't require bleaching, and isn't as damaging as when bleaching is needed. In your case you'd need complete bleaching, so it would be the most damaging kind of dying. A stylist would have to see your hair in person to tell you how well it would handle that kind of bleaching.
It's permanent because the color in your hair is chemically removed. You'd have to dye your hair again (but not bleach) to go back to your natural color. Of course it only affects the hair which is actually dyed, so you'll have dark roots growing out in contrast to the dyed hair.
From the people I've seen with bleached hair, I think you have to expect your hair to look flat and visibly less healthy if you bleach. Malfoy's hair doesn't look that healthy to me, although he may be wearing a wig. If you do decide to have it done, because there is so much potential for damage, go to a good salon where they have people who are expert at bleaching.
I'm pretty sure it is a wig, but yes if I do it probably won't be a "home job" because I have absolutely no experience with this lol.
Dear Friend,
Urban Coybow is generally on track, but not in this case. There are poor people like me who have a genetic abnormality at age 73 who would like to have gray or white hair, which I think is very beautiful. While my short beard has achieved Coyboys goal, my hair remains mostly dark, dark bloind with a trace of gray.
What have I done wrong?
I asked one of my hair managers if he could dye it gray, and he said yes, and did a good job of putting in platinum highlights by the foil method. But this has to be done repeatedly, because it grows out. Most people though it looked good, but it was not gray or silver.
I decided I was too old to do this, so stopped, and accepted nature.
But the real reason someone like you with very dark hair should not try for the white or platinum look, is that even the first try is going to damage your hair. Then at least every 3 - 4 weeks you are going to have to deal with your roots, and to blend them in more stoooof is going to be put on your long hair. It is never going to be even in color, and the longer hair is going to look fried.
NOW HEAR THIS. NOW HEAR THIS.
Dying hair is incompatible with long hair. Sooner or later you are going to say in dismay, cut it off.
If you want to color your hair, use temporary colors like henna, or clever blues and reds and greens, which cost, but do not disturbe the hair structure.
NEVER USE A PRODUCT WITH PAROXIDE, for it strips the color. Do not believe that you can dye your hair back to its natural color. You will end up with hair like straw which is close to the color you started with.
I hope this does not disappoint you, but I am an addict of reality.
James
Yeh I realise this. The re-dying of roots is probably going to be the most damaging and annoying part, unless I somehow manage to re-dye roots without touching the already dyed hair to not damage it further.
Anyway, as I said, this is just a possibility I'm tossing around.
go to HairMixer.com and download your full face pic and then malfoy pic then transpose the 2 put your face on his hairstyle--easiest way to see and save a trip to the salon.
Will do, thanks!
Sorry for the low quality, my camera isn't working atm so I'm using a crappy alternative.
Hi Derf,
Okay here's my tak on it.
If you have something that you've taken time to grow out and BTW you hair looks in amazing condition, why would you want to spoil it and possibily damage it. As you know I will always say "oh dear time to get your roots done dear!!!"
It's your hair and your choice and I'd hate to see a "oh dear I've really damaged my hair" post in a few weeks!
Do it like me go silver naturally..:-)!
Cheers,
John.
Personally I think your hair looks ace now, buts its your call.
~ Dave
I agree with Dave here. I don't think that you should risk your awesome hair but in the end it's up to you.
Cheers,
Peter
Remember that all of the hair on your head and face is dark. If you go white on the top of your head, you'll still have dark eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard/mustache. The eye brows can be dyed or shaved/waxed off, same with your beard and mustache. But you really don't want to mess with your eyelashes.
That looks rather strange to me. The hair on its own looks awesome but the brown goatee and eyebrows DO makes it look silly. I guess there are even more issues than I thought. Though I'd likely get rid of the facial hair if I ever did it, eyebrows would still be an issue...
Thanks Dave!
There was a character in a book by Ruth Rendell who dyed her hair silver. She murdered someone and kept the body in a closet. The silver hair wasn't a disguise, merely eccentricity. I can't remember the name of the book, which is written from the interesting point of view of her innocent boyfriend. Good book, though.
I'll keep this in mind as an assassination technique for body disposal in case I ever dye my hair silver lol. Seriously though, I've played enough from the Hitman games series to know about this stuff :P
I think its a bad idea dude. I don't think it'll go well with your skin tone, that guy in the picture has very fair skin. I suggest you stick to brown.
Hmm, I'd say the best way to do it is just waiting some years and Nature will dye your hair for you!
If you want something safe and reversible, try to get the dyes that are used for beards to play Santa, they won't damage your hair and can be washed away.
Dude, your hair is awesome! You look great.
I am STRONGLY against you dying it for two reasons:
1) You could damage your terrific mane, rendering years of growth useless, and
2) I don't think you'd look good at all with white/blonde/silver hair.
If you're getting bored with the way you look, try changing some things up. Buy some unique hair ties; braid it; try changing your facial hair; get a new wardrobe. . . just leave the hair alone. I feel like screaming when people with long hair (particularly women) say "I'm bored; maybe I should get a new haircut or dye it." As many like Franny, Jason, and JSfrodo have shown, there are TONS of things to do with your hair that don't involve cutting it, if you're looking for something "new and exciting."
Obviously that's just my opinion, but I really, really wouldn't dye it if I were you.
Joshua
I would suggest thinking about it a long time and consider all that could go wrong.
You look fine the way you are now but if you need a change just be very careful. We would rather not be singing "Another One Bites The Dust" in a month or two.
