Ran across a "heads up" at the FDA.gov website about the above chemical
(check out http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-dea.html) . . . it's not been demonstrated to cause problems, but it's kinda-sorta associated with cancer in laboratory animals. Checked on some shampoo labels in the house, found it on Prell shampoo (cocamide DEA), but not on the Aussie stuff. Didn't check anything else . . . frankly, not all that worried about it. But just in case anyone else watches out for these things, here's some of the more common chemicals you might want to watch out for, as given by the FDA:
cocamide DEA
Cocamide MEA
DEA-Cetyl Phosphate
DEA Oleth-3 Phosphate
Lauramide DEA
Linoleamide MEA
Myristamide DEA
Oleamide DEA
Stearamide MEA
TEA-Lauryl Sulfate
Triethanolamine
As the FDA said on their website: "The Agency believes that at the present time there is no reason for consumers to be alarmed based on the use of these substances in cosmetics. However, consumers wishing to avoid cosmetics containing DEA or DEA-related ingredients may do so by reviewing the ingredient statement that is required to appear on the outer container label of cosmetics offered for retail sale to consumers."
Now y'all know as much about this as I do . . .

Ya, I've heard some pretty bad stuff about TEA-Lauryl Sulfate. It's not widely reported on but is in a lot of stuff for the foaming properties it adds to soaps. A lot of these chemicals will someday be exposed and eliminated but sometimes it's still like the 50's where stuff like DDT was widely used to kill the weeds on your lawn....works great but they didn't know enough about it to see the bad effects.
