How many of you long-hairs:
1.) Got maintenance cuts?
2.) Grew it out without maintenance cuts, cut it, then grew it out with maintenance cuts?
3.) Received more attention from women?
4.) Cut it more than once?
5.) Cut it because of what other people said?
6.) Found some way to grow hair out faster?
7.) Got mistaken for a girl sometimes?
8.) Grew it out as a teenager?
9.) Noticed guys started checking you out, even if you're not gay?
10.) Ate more protein once you decided to grow your hair out?
11.) Began to work out once you decided to grow your hair?
Also, what's an undercut? Is it long hair, except short on the sides?
I'm among one of the trillions of teenagers on this board who are just starting to grow their hair out.
Or shaven hair on the sides (not too high) and back with the rest of
the hair long.
My replies are surrounded by the asterisks...

But I do remember being a bit afraid of being mistaken for a girl sometimes. It's also difficult if one is sensitive to this type of criticism as well. During teen years most normal people are out there practising like crazy their future male or female roles....over-emphasising things a lot. Macho and girly things etc. so it's not easy. Nevertheless I used one trick and argument against them that usually helped me out quite a lot. Imagine a 3 foot long length of thick lovely shiny human hair. First imagine hanging it onto a peg or a coat hanger. It is and can only ever be just hair in other words it has or reflects if you like a neuter gender. What else can it be or possibly reflect ? Second imagine it on a girl or a woman. It takes on or reflects a feminine gender. Third imagine it on a boy or a man. What gender is it then ? Obviously it cannot reflect a neuter or a feminine gender.....all that's left therefore is the masculine gender. I used this argument a lot with anti-girl friends and family, quite often it made them irritable and frustrated but at least it usually shut them up for good and I was left alone. Sort of "go and sort yourself out first before bothering me !" (Yet to be honest even I still can't understand myself how long hair on a guy can be masculine despite being told dozens of times by genuine lady friends that it's true.) Hope this helps ? :-)
9.) Noticed guys started checking you out, even if you're not gay? Never noticed or bothered if they have.... far far too busy doing and enjoying what "I" want in life.
10.) Ate more protein once you decided to grow your hair out? No but as I seem to have existed on eggs and baked beans since birth.... ?
11.) Began to work out once you decided to grow your hair? Not specifically as Ive always been involved in some sporting activity or other, nevertheless good circulation in the scalp is obviously important. You'd think stress would improve the circulation though - LOL ! ;-)
Also, what's an undercut? Is it long hair, except short on the sides?
No idea. Could it be that particular style where the 'surface' hair on the top of the head lies both on the base of the neck and down at the sides, whilst the 'closest to the scalp' hair underneath it is cut up short inside and well beneath it ?
I'm among one of the trillions of teenagers on this board who are just starting to grow their hair out.
Do you seriously mean that this board is read by 'quite a number' of teenage guys ? I mean do you personally know of others or....?
Anyway well done Super Bob ! Nicely put together and well thought out ! I enjoyed answering it so any time......it also brought back a lot of old memories, anxieties and heartaches all at once too !! :-)

1.No maintenance cuts
2. See above
3. I get more notice from what I would describe as 'wild' girls
4. Have not cut it in two years.
5. When I was 24, I had shoulder-length hair. I cut it to get a job.
6. The best nutrition is from food. Take a multi-vitamin and lots of fruit. Cut way back on meat.
7. Never had that long of hair. Besides, I do have thinning hair.
8. Yep. Teenage to age 24
9. Nope. No difference in hair length.
10. No. Just good nutrition. Adequate protein is easy to achieve. To my knowledge, adding protein doesn't help
11. I've always worked out.
Good luck and have fun. That's the reason I started growing it out again.

maybe. not a ton, though

Its a way to make hair less puffy but doesn't look so good on some styles and becomes a pain in the ass when someone wants to even it out
Yep, but rarely. I've gotten my hair evened out during my first year of growth (once every 4 months), as I trust my hairdresser fully that she'll never cut more than I ask for :)
Yes, to some extent.
Hmm... nope, not really. But I must say that from the rare compliments that I gotten for my long hair, all except 1 is a woman.
Nope, once I decided to grow it out, "cut" becomes an obsolete term. At the very most, it is "trim" only when necessary.
Yes, I used to when I was younger, but not now.
I would say yes and no. In theory, our hair can never actually grow faster, as everyone's hair has a maximum growth rate, which is pre-determined genetically. It is just that some of us have not yet maximise our own hair growth potential, due to insufficient nutrient intake or unbalanced diet. I used to have unhealthy and unbalanced diets and my hair grows at most 1/2" per mth. Now that I'm more aware of my own diet, plus daily doses of Biotin, my hair has a healthy growth rate of 3/4" to 1" per mth, which I think should be approaching my own maximum growth rate.
Yes, very often. Especially in restrooms.
Tried to but failed, due to school rules and such.
Yes, just glances no conversation. But I thought it sometimes make me feel very uncomfortable.
Not really. Just made sure that my diet is balanced.
You can say that. I used to be a hopeless couch potato with no serious exercise regimes. Now, I made sure I'll exercise at least 2 times per week for at least 1 hour each time.
Good luck and all the best in your hair growth.
Really? I'd think that would be the last place.
Bill - wondering how I'd even phrase that question.... ;-)
Umm... what I meant was people often tend to recheck the sign on the restroom's door to ensure that they are in the correct one, when they see me (especially so when my hair is loose). Some of them even told me right in my face that, "Hey, tis the gents!". Nasty!
I think at such gestures obviously mean they thought I'm a girl. Sigh!!
Don't worry about looking like a girl. I have short hair currently I still look like a girl! Now, pity me!
Yes, once every three or so months; just a few times a year to keep the ends trimmed and even as well as the back all blunt-cut.
W/o maintenance cuts.
Yes, once length was well past shoulders and starting to look more glorious in appearance (past that dreadded "middle" stage).
Yes. I'm on my 3rd "long hair" adventure. Both other times I had mid back length hair (about 3" past the shoulder blades), w/ long bangs down to the bottom of my chest, same length hair all the way around.
Somewhat, yes. Peer pressure was involved but it was more out of thinking I ought to (in both cases). Evidently I didn't need to as badly as I thought because nearly 6 years has passed and I still don't think it makes any difference whatsoever how long a man's hair is in regards to what it says about his character and heart.
Yes:
- Atleast 2400mcg of Biotin supplements
- Plenty of sleep
- Drink only water and soy-based products w/o sugar
- Take a good multivitamin
- Positive attitude =)
Yes, especially when driving.
No.
Yes. Some of them were wondering what all the hub-bub was about. They tend to put you under the microsoft a bit more often.
No.
Some, yes. I was motivated by it because I was then interested in making myself feel better based on my appearance.
No, an undercut is where the back isn't quite blunt; the very back neck hair is slightly shorter so the top, longer hair curles under slightly. It's feminine in appearance and I don't recommend men doing that. I had it cut like that once and I didn't like it after a bit.
You'll enjoy it once it's about 15 or so inches long. There's nothing like having hair that's nearly two feet long flowing in your hands and riding on your back. It'll affect everything in your life.
B
No, that is not an undercut.
Both so very true....:-)
P
Trillions? Really? I'd would have been happy knowing there were thousands.
No
Nope
Nope
Definitely. At least half the girls that I've met since I started growing my hair out commented on it.

I'm not good with maintenance...get a little cleanup trim every six months or so.
Wife hates it and tells me often. Rest of the female population appears about split.
Twice
Weddings, both times. Didn't want to be in somebody's wedding pictures in the midst of the awkward stage.
nope
Once or twice from the back. From the front, the stache usually tips em off.
Shaggy, but not shoulder-length. Mom was less tolerent then. (She likes it now).
Once or twice.
Nope
Yep. Lost 30 pounds.
So what do you think now Super Bob especially after all these really great replies :-) ?
Any ideas on your thoughts etc. or what you might be planning to do next as I'm sure we'd like to know after all our efforts don't you ? :-) And keep us regularly posted of developments too as it's obviously very important what the next (trillion !) generation feels, thinks and does in the face of peer pressure and so on and so on....
All power to your roots Man.....:-)
I appreciate all the replies. Thanks a lot! I've only just begun my third month without a cut. I haven't been putting any gel or anything in it because I want it to look really healthy once it grows out. My dad knows this woman who cuts hair and says she's long hair-friendly, so I'm thinking about getting maintenance cuts with no more than 1/4 of an inch trimmed. I don't want to be set back for a month!
too lazy for that. (though I'm told I ought to to make it less frizzy) .. do the very occasional take the ends off from time to time.
grew from short it to around 8 inches. Then it looked too much like a mullet for my liking so I got it cut (also had university interviews at the time) longish at the front, short at the back. Not touched it since.
More attention from a smaller cross section of women. It's quite nice being told by a girl that they wish they had hair like mine (long, brown and wavy). Sometimes they will just want to plait it (but no more than that...DARN!)
You still have to put the effort in, though - your personality, and the way you present yourself (confidence, etc) is more important than just your hair.
I have been recognised/approached by girls (and boys!) who have met me at past events often when I couldn't remember who they were. So I reckon it helps because it's distinctive and something they remember you by if they bump into you again.
nope - parents were initially infuriated but have given up and since accepted it... although my decision to grow was initially influenced by my peer group when at the time a lot of my friends had long hair
can't say I have...
About four or five times that I know of and by both sexes. And it's always happened when I'm hanging out with some girls. Just turning around and saying "ladies????" usually reduces them to sqeuamish apologies (this is the UK, you see) - comedy every time.
yep - started at 16 (now 24) - oddly enough it was much more prevelant back then (in the UK) - no probs with that.
yes... happened as much beforehand as it has since (sometimes but not very often) - I don't it's made any difference either way.
Became more health concious, put that's in part a matter of growing up. You need to be a little bit tidier in general to get away with long hair.
Don't know that it is. I just go for the simple same-length-all-around style.
Good luck with that... as you know there's a tedious stage (this is worse if you have naturally wavy hair) then I'd advise you to get one haircut or so and then leave it.
